Periyar Lake and the Tiger Reserve
The lake was created in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar dam, drowning a valley of forest, and the standing dead trees in the shallows are its signature image. The reserve around it covers around nine hundred square kilometres of the Cardamom Hills and holds elephant, gaur, sambar, wild dog and tiger, though the last is rarely seen. The boat trip takes you along the shoreline where animals come down to drink. Visit on the earliest trip you can get. Sightings are never guaranteed and anyone promising them is selling something, but elephant and gaur at the water are common enough on a morning boat.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
The first four hours are the fastest of the journey, on six-lane NH 44. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Electronic City before 5:30 AM, because arriving at Thekkady in the afternoon rather than the evening is what makes the next morning boat possible. The Thoppur ghat between Dharmapuri and Salem is the first of two gradients on this route - four-laned but steep enough that loaded trucks crawl - and our drivers hold back rather than joining in. Salem has the best highway restaurants on the corridor and is the natural breakfast halt.

Dindigul
Lock City of India
Fast, flat four-lane highway south through the Kongu plains, and the easiest driving of the day. Namakkal has the eighteen-foot monolithic Anjaneyar at the base of its rock fort. Karur follows on the Amaravathi, the home textile capital. Dindigul is where the route leaves the north-south corridor and turns west toward the hills, and it lands almost exactly at lunch on an early departure - which is convenient, because the Thalappakatti biryani that originated here is the most famous food stop on this highway. Beyond Dindigul the Western Ghats begin to appear properly on the horizon for the first time.

Cumbum
Grape Valley of South India
The road runs west through Batlagundu, where the Kodaikanal road branches north, and into Theni district at the foot of the Ghats. The mountains are close now and the country changes - irrigated, green, and hemmed in by hills on the western side. Bodinayakkanur lies a short way west of Theni and is where most of the Indian cardamom crop is auctioned; the trade defines the town. The Cumbum valley beyond is grape country. Panneer Thratchai grapes grown on this valley floor carry a GI tag and the vineyards run along the road under the wall of the Ghats, which is an unexpected landscape to find in Tamil Nadu. It is worth slowing for, and the roadside grapes in season are worth stopping for.
Thekkady
Lake in the Cardamom Hills
The last thirty kilometres are the climb. The road leaves the valley floor and ascends through forest into the Cardamom Hills, and the temperature drops perceptibly as it goes - by the top the air is cool and smells of spice, which is not a figure of speech in this particular place. The Kerala border comes at Kumily and the interstate permit is presented there, arranged by us in advance. Kumily is the town: a main street of spice shops, homestays and small hotels, with plantations running up the slopes behind it. Thekkady, four kilometres further, is the reserve entrance and the boat landing rather than a settlement. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage - and on a wildlife booking will take you to the ticket counter first if that is what the next morning requires. A 5:00 AM departure puts most travellers in Kumily by around 4:00 PM.

Tempo Traveller Packages for the Bangalore to Thekkady Route
Corporate Package
Built for Bangalore IT and manufacturing teams heading to Periyar for offsites, team outings and annual trips. Includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, a named driver for the full multi-day trip and consolidated monthly billing for registered accounts. The same corporate tempo traveller bangalore vehicle stays with your team across the Thekkady, Vandanmedu and Ramakkalmedu legs, with duty slips signed daily and reconciled against the final invoice. Our corporate travels bangalore desk manages the arrangement end to end, including airport pickups for colleagues flying in.
Family Package
The most common booking on this corridor. Extended families of ten to sixteen travelling for three to five days, usually combining Thekkady with Munnar and often finishing at Alleppey or Kochi. The itinerary is built around the early boat cruise slots and the evening show timings rather than driving hours, and the driver is briefed to expect long waits at plantations and viewpoints. For families travelling with elderly parents, the tempo traveller’s step height and seat pitch matter more on the ghat section than anywhere else in the trip.
Budget Package
For groups where cost per head decides the booking. Non-AC 9 to 14 seater tempo travellers, point to point, no frills, clean vehicle and a verified driver. This suits college groups, community trips and association travel. The tempo traveller per km rate bangalore for the non-AC tier is our lowest, and across a 1,040 kilometre round trip the saving across a full vehicle is substantial. Note that AC matters less on this route than most, since you are in the hills for the middle of the trip. The budget tier is about vehicle specification only, never about maintenance or driver vetting.
Luxury Package
Our premium tempo travellers, with fewer and wider push-back seats, additional legroom, better cabin insulation and upgraded interiors. On a route with 520 kilometres each way and a ghat climb at the end, that specification is practical rather than decorative. Suited to senior management travel and milestone family trips. For groups wanting a further step up, our luxury urbania rental bangalore option in 13 to 17 seater configuration covers the same route with a monocoque body and a noticeably smoother ride.
Our Vehicle Range in Bangalore
Our ac tempo traveller rental bangalore fleet runs 9, 12, 14, 16 and 18 seater configurations. Because every vehicle category operates from the same Bangalore base, a change in headcount after booking usually means a change of vehicle rather than a new booking.
• Tempo traveller — 8 to 18 seater, AC and non-AC, the core vehicle for this route
• Force Urbania — 13 to 17 seater luxury van, the premium alternative on the same corridor
• Mini bus — 12 to 24 seater, AC and non-AC
• Bus — 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches
• Cars — 4 to 7 seater, from Etios, Dzire, Innova, Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross through Fortuner and Commuter, up to Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, Mercedes-Benz S Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost
Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. Every vehicle in the fleet is seated configuration with push-back seats, which is why the Thekkady run is planned as an early-morning daytime drive with proper meal halts instead of an overnight haul. On a route that finishes with a ghat climb, arriving in daylight with a rested driver is not a preference, it is the safe way to do it.
Billing Details — What Is Included and What Is Extra
We quote in writing before you book and the quote itemises every line, so nothing appears at trip end that you have not already approved. A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms the booking.
Included in the Quoted Fare
• Base fare and fuel charges
• Driver allowance
Not Included — Billed Separately at Actuals
• Toll charges and parking fees
• Interstate tax for the Karnataka to Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu to Kerala crossings
• Additional driver bata after 9:45 PM
• GST as applicable
• Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage
Garage-to-garage billing is the standard basis across the organised group transport industry in Bangalore. The meter starts when the tempo traveller leaves our garage for your pickup point and stops when it returns. That distance is already built into the written quote, so the number you approve is the number you settle.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. Vehicle insurance and full statutory driver and vehicle compliance are maintained across the entire fleet.

What Our Customers Say About Our Tempo Traveller Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Thekkady Tempo Traveller
The bangalore to thekkady distance by road is approximately 520 kilometres via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Theni and Cumbum, which is the route we run. That works out to 10 to 11 hours of driving before meal halts. The last 45 kilometres from Cumbum up to Kumily is a ghat climb of roughly 900 metres, so we plan a 4:30 AM departure from Bangalore to get that section done in daylight. Groups that leave late routinely finish the climb after dark, which is avoidable.
Tempo traveller fare starts around Rs 29,500. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
Yes, and this route needs two rather than one. The vehicle crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu near Hosur, and then from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at the Kumily check post. Both permits and the associated state taxes are billed at actuals rather than folded into the base rate. We arrange all the documentation before departure, so there is nothing for you to organise, and our drivers handle both checkpoints as routine.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. The balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance. For the September to March Kerala season a higher advance may be requested, since those weekends book out well in advance.
Yes, and this is how most groups book it. The same vehicle and driver stay with you throughout, covering the Periyar reserve entrance, the spice plantations around Kumily, the evening Kalari and Kathakali shows, and day trips to Ramakkalmedu, Chellarkovil and Vandanmedu, plus any onward leg to Munnar or Alleppey. Multi-day bookings are billed on total kilometres and hours with a per-day minimum plus driver allowance. Share your day-wise itinerary at enquiry stage and we quote the whole trip as one figure.
Three days is the practical minimum: travel down on day one, a full day at Periyar and the plantations on day two, and the drive back on day three. Four or five days is far better and lets you add Ramakkalmedu, Chellarkovil and Vandanmedu without rushing. Most groups extend to Munnar, which is only about 110 kilometres away, and a Thekkady and Munnar circuit works comfortably over five to six days. Adding Alleppey and Kochi makes it seven.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services, and no vehicle in our fleet is a sleeper. Everything is seated configuration with push-back seats. On this route in particular we would not recommend an overnight drive even if we had them, because the trip ends with a hairpin ghat climb that is far safer in daylight with a rested driver. An early morning start is the better plan.
Our fleet covers 9, 12, 14, 16 and 18 seater configurations in AC and non-AC, all with push-back seats and overhead luggage racks. For a four or five day Kerala trip we usually suggest booking one seat above your headcount so bags travel inside comfortably rather than being packed around passengers, which matters more than usual here because most groups buy spices and tea at Kumily on the way out. Above eighteen passengers a 20 to 24 seater mini bus is the better option and we will say so at the quote stage.
Both handle the climb without difficulty and both are comfortable on the highway stretch. The Urbania is built on a monocoque frame with independent front suspension and standing headroom in the aisle, so it rides noticeably smoother over 520 kilometres, and it costs more per day. The tempo traveller carries a slightly wider seating range, up to 18, and is the value choice. For cost-led group bookings we recommend the tempo traveller; for older travellers or premium trips, the Urbania. Ask for both quotes together and decide on the numbers.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if they wish to be covered. All vehicles carry valid insurance and full statutory compliance, and every driver is verified with a commercial licence and route experience, but personal passenger cover is not part of the booking. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your travel date, Bangalore pickup location, passenger count and day-wise itinerary. A written itemised quote follows within 2 hours. Confirm it, pay the 20 percent advance, and you receive driver details, vehicle registration and the full billing breakdown in writing. Our luxury tempo traveller bangalore enquiry lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
