The Jain Math at Moodabidri holds palm-leaf manuscripts of the Dhavala, Jayadhavala and Mahadhavala - commentaries on the Shatkhandagama and among the most significant surviving texts of the Digambara tradition, preserved in this small town for centuries. They are religious property rather than museum exhibits and access is not casual; viewing is at the discretion of the math and generally restricted. Chowta Palace
The eighteenth-century palace of the Chowta rulers, who governed this part of the coast, is a wooden structure of the kind Tulu Nadu built and very little of which survives - carved pillars, sloping tiled roofs, inner courtyards and a scale that is domestic rather than imperial. It houses a collection of artefacts and manuscripts. Visit for an hour; it is a rare surviving example of coastal Karnataka domestic architecture and it is a good deal quieter than the basadis. Access arrangements vary, so check locally on the day.
Karkala and the Chaturmukha Basadi
Twenty kilometres north, Karkala holds a forty-two foot Bahubali carved from a single granite block and raised on Gomatabetta in 1432, standing on a bare rock hill with the coastal plain and the Ghats in view. Below it sits the Chaturmukha Basadi of 1586, a four-faced structure with identical entrances on all sides and Tirthankara images facing each way - severe, symmetrical and unlike anything else in the region. Visit both in a morning. The climb to the statue is short and stepped, and the view alone justifies it.
Venur
Twenty-five kilometres east, Venur is a village on the Phalguni with a thirty-five foot Bahubali raised in 1604 by the Ajila chieftains - the smallest of the coastal monoliths and by a distance the least visited. There are also basadis and the remains of the Ajila palace. There is essentially nothing else there. Visit precisely for that: a six-hundred-year-old monolithic statue standing in a quiet village with no crowd, no queue and no commerce around it, which is an experience Shravanabelagola cannot offer.
Mangalore and the Coast
Moodabidri sits thirty-five kilometres inland from Mangalore, which puts the whole coast within easy reach - Panambur and Tannirbhavi beaches, the Kadri Manjunath temple, the Sultan Battery watchtower and the confluence at Sasihithlu. Further north, Udupi has the Krishna temple and Malpe the boat to St Mary Islands, with their columnar basalt formations. Visit the coast as a second or third day. For many groups the Jain circuit and the coast together make the trip, and Moodabidri is well placed to be the base for both.

Junction of the Charmadi Ghat
Belur comes thirty-five kilometres beyond Hassan with the Chennakeshava temple, UNESCO-inscribed in 2023 and carrying bracket figures among the finest sculpture in India. Chikmagalur follows and the country turns to coffee - the Baba Budan hills to the north are where Indian coffee began. Beyond Chikmagalur the road runs west through Mudigere into proper Malnad, winding continuously through estate and forest, and Kottigehara is where the Charmadi ghat turns down toward the coast. This is where our drivers confirm the ghat position; Charmadi is narrow, steep and quick to close for landslip risk, and Shiradi is the alternative.
Venur
Bahubali of the Phalguni
The Charmadi descent drops through forest in a series of tight hairpins and is one of the more beautiful roads in Karnataka - not a road for a long wheelbase, and one to be doing in daylight. At the bottom the country changes completely into coastal Dakshina Kannada: humid, dense, areca and coconut where there was forest. Ujire comes first, eight kilometres short of Dharmasthala, where a thirty-nine foot Bahubali stands on Ratnagiri hill above the temple town - the newest of the monoliths, installed in 1973 and carved at Karkala. Belthangady follows, and then Venur on the Phalguni, where a thirty-five foot figure raised in 1604 stands in a village with almost nothing else in it. It is the quietest stop of the circuit and often the one people remember.
Moodabidri
Jain Kashi of Karnataka
Fifteen kilometres of coastal plain road through areca gardens and paddy, flat and easy after the ghat. The landscape here is Tulu Nadu proper - tiled roofs, temple tanks, and the particular density of green that this coast has. Moodabidri is a working town rather than a heritage site set apart, and the basadis stand among ordinary streets - which is part of what makes it interesting. The Saavira Kambada Basadi is the principal one; the Jain Math holds the Dhavala manuscripts, and Chowta Palace is a short walk. Karkala is twenty kilometres north.
