Places to Visit in Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake is the centrepiece of the hill station and the attraction that almost every visitor sees first. Created artificially in 1863 under British administration, the lake spans around 60 acres in a distinctive star shape and sits at an elevation of about 2,285 metres, surrounded on all sides by forest and the pleasant streets of the town. Boating is the primary activity, with pedal boats, row boats and motor boats available for hire, and the shoreline path of around five kilometres is one of the most popular walks in the region, combining lake views with glimpses into the pine forest on the hillsides above. Cycling around the lake on rented bicycles is another favourite, particularly in the early morning when the mist is still on the water and the traffic is light. The proximity of Kodaikanal Lake to Bryant Park, the market street, and the main accommodation cluster makes it the natural starting point for a day of sightseeing in the town, and it tends to look its best in the late afternoon light when the western sky reflects across the water.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Hosur
Tamil Nadu border crossing
The first stage of the journey covers around 45 kilometres from Bangalore city through the Electronic City corridor and out toward Hosur on the Tamil Nadu border. This is the exit corridor from Bangalore for all routes heading south and southeast into Tamil Nadu, so traffic here during weekday peak hours and weekend mornings can be heavy, particularly through the Electronic City flyover and the Silk Board junction for travellers starting from the southern and eastern parts of the city. The recommendation for a Bangalore to Kodaikanal cab departure is to leave between four and five in the morning to clear this section cleanly before the traffic builds, or alternatively after nine-thirty when the morning peak has eased. Hosur, a rapidly growing industrial town, marks the Tamil Nadu state border and is a natural first stop for fuel and an early breakfast, with a good selection of highway restaurants serving both South Indian and North Indian food. The road condition on this section is generally good and the drive into Hosur is uneventful once the Bangalore city congestion is cleared.

Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri
mango orchards and rocky hills
From Hosur, NH 44 continues southwest through Krishnagiri and then Dharmapuri, covering around 100 additional kilometres and bringing the total from Bangalore to roughly 145 kilometres. This is where the landscape of the journey takes on a distinctly different character from the urban and peri-urban environment around Bangalore: the countryside opens into rolling semi-arid terrain with scrub vegetation, rocky outcrops and, in season, the famous Krishnagiri mango orchards that line the roadsides and supply much of Tamil Nadu's mango production. Krishnagiri town itself is a major junction and commercial hub, well-stocked with fuel stations, ATMs and a variety of restaurants, making it the most practical mid-morning stop for a longer break if the journey started at dawn. The Krishnagiri Reservoir is visible from certain stretches of the highway approaching the town and offers a pleasant view of blue water against the rocky hills. Dharmapuri, continuing south, is another significant town with its own fort and temple complex that history-minded travellers may want to note. This stretch is particularly comfortable to drive and the NH 44 is in good condition for most of the distance.

Salem
Roughly the halfway point of the journey
From Dharmapuri to Salem the route continues on NH 44 for approximately 65 kilometres, bringing the total distance from Bangalore to around 210 kilometres and marking roughly the halfway point of the full journey to Kodaikanal. Salem is one of Tamil Nadu's largest cities and an important industrial and textile hub, and the approach to and through the city can involve some traffic congestion, particularly around the commercial centre and the Yercaud Ghat road junction. For the purposes of the Kodaikanal trip, Salem is primarily a break stop: fuel, a proper lunch, or a coffee at one of the highway restaurants that cluster around the NH 44 corridor through the city. The road through Salem then continues on the Salem-Coimbatore national highway bypass and connects back to the main south-going highway toward Dindigul, which is more direct than passing through the city centre on the older road. For travellers leaving Bangalore very early, Salem is typically the right time for a proper meal break, arriving around half past eight to nine in the morning.

Dindigul
Fertile farmland of the Kongu Nadu region
The stretch from Salem to Dindigul covers around 130 kilometres and is one of the longer uninterrupted highway drives on the journey, passing through the agricultural heart of central Tamil Nadu with irrigated fields, small towns and the characteristic landscape of the Kongu Nadu region. The road passes near Namakkal, known for its hilltop fort and Anjaneya Temple carved into a cave, and through or around Karur, an important weaving and textile town, before reaching Dindigul. Dindigul is a significant city and junction town at the foot of the Palani Hills, known for its distinctive rock fort and for being the last major urban stop before the ghat road to Kodaikanal begins. This is where a Bangalore to Kodaikanal taxi driver typically plans a second break, since the ghat road ahead requires full concentration and it is better to approach it rested and with a full fuel tank. Dindigul's markets and restaurants on the main road offer the regional food of the area, including the famous Dindigul biryani that many travellers specifically stop for.
Kodaikanal
Your Hill Station Destination
From Dindigul, the route continues to Batlagundu and then turns onto the Kodai Ghat Road, which is the final 40-kilometre climb from the plains to the hilltop at Kodaikanal. This is without question the most memorable section of the entire journey: the road climbs sharply through a series of hairpin bends, cutting through eucalyptus plantations, rocky outcrops, shola grasslands and forest as the altitude rises and the temperature drops noticeably with each hundred metres gained. Silver Cascade Falls appears on the left side of the road at around eight kilometres below the town, marking the moment where the full character of the hill destination becomes apparent, and many travellers stop here for photographs and to feel the mist from the waterfall. The ghat road requires a careful, experienced driver at the wheel, with particular attention needed at the sharper bends during monsoon season when wet roads and limited visibility can make the climb more demanding. The arrival into Kodaikanal town after this climb, through pine-scented air and with the immediate drop in temperature from the plains heat, is a genuinely rewarding moment that makes the full journey feel worthwhile.

Booking a tempo traveller for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under five minutes. Follow these four steps.
Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels
• Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
• Share your travel date, Bangalore pickup location (area or landmark — Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, hotel name, tech park), destination or full itinerary, number of passengers, and preferred vehicle.
• For Kodaikanal, also share your hotel or resort address and passenger count, since both are required on the Tamil Nadu e-pass application. Mention if Berijam Lake is on your list so the day can be planned around the forest permit timings.
• For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.
• For luxury vehicles, mention the occasion — corporate, wedding, VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.
Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote
• Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.
• The quote clearly itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate (Rs per km or flat package), driver allowance, applicable toll estimates, and the Tamil Nadu interstate permit, which does apply on the Kodaikanal route for a Karnataka-registered vehicle.
• No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.
• For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.
• If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time.
Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance
• Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone.
• A 20 per cent advance payment of the total fare confirms the booking.
• Payment options: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer, or credit and debit card via payment link.
• Advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.

• Once the vehicle is assigned, our team applies for the Tamil Nadu e-pass against that registration number and shares the QR code with you before departure.
• Kodaikanal peaks hard from April to June and again over Christmas and New Year. Fleet availability tightens weeks ahead of those windows, so book early.

What Our Customers Say About Our Tempo Traveller Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kodaikannal Tempo Traveller
The road distance is 465 kilometres via NH44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur and Dindigul. In a tempo traveller, allow 8 hours 30 minutes to 10 hours including a breakfast halt, a lunch stop at Dindigul and the ghat climb. The final 40 kilometres from Batlagundu alone takes about 90 minutes.
Yes. Every non-local motor vehicle entering Kodaikanal must carry a valid Tamil Nadu e-pass, applied for free at epass.tnega.org and verified at the checkpost near Silver Cascade Falls. It is tied to the vehicle, not to individual passengers. Once your vehicle is assigned, our team applies for the e-pass on your behalf and sends you the QR code before departure. Rules on Tamil Nadu hill-station entry have changed several times, so we re-confirm the current position before every trip.
Yes. Kodaikanal is in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, so a Karnataka-registered vehicle requires a Tamil Nadu interstate permit. Tejas Travels arranges the permit and itemizes the cost separately in your written quote. The driver handles the formalities at the Hosur border checkpost.
A 12 seater AC tempo traveller starts at Rs 24,000. The Tamil Nadu permit, toll and parking are billed separately. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from garage to garage. Send us your dates and group size on WhatsApp for an itemized quote within two hours.
The quoted fare includes the base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Toll and parking, interstate tax and permit charges, driver bata after 9:45 pm and GST are charged separately. The final rental is based on total kilometres and hours calculated garage to garage. Passenger insurance is not covered by Tejas Tours and Travels.
Twenty per cent of the total fare is payable in advance. The advance can be paid by UPI, NEFT, IMPS, RTGS or card via payment link, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. The balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance.
The road surface is good, but the 40-kilometre climb from Batlagundu has a long series of hairpin bends and frequent fog above 1,500 metres. It is entirely manageable in a well-maintained tempo traveller with a driver who knows the route, which is why we assign drivers to this corridor on hill-road experience. We plan departures so the ghat is climbed in daylight, and passengers prone to motion sickness should take a front row seat.
Three nights and four days is the format that works best, given that two of those days are largely spent driving. Day one is the journey, day two covers the town circuit of Kodai Lake, Coaker Walk, Bryant Park and Pillar Rocks, day three takes in Berijam Lake or Dolphin Nose and Poombarai, and day four is the return. A two-night trip is possible but tight.
We operate 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers in Standard AC, Executive and Maharaja luxury configurations. For groups above 18, we move you to our mini bus or full-size bus fleet, all of which handle the Kodaikanal ghat road. Every vehicle carries valid all-India and interstate permits, GPS and a first-aid kit.
September to March gives the clearest views and the most comfortable touring weather. April to June is peak season, cool and pleasant but heavily crowded, with e-pass checks at their strictest. July and August bring heavy rain, low cloud and slower ghat driving, though the waterfalls are at their best.
