The Shivanasamudra Power Station
A detail almost every visitor misses. The hydroelectric station at Shivanasamudra, commissioned in 1902, was the first of its kind in Asia, built to send power over a hundred kilometres to the Kolar Gold Fields - which made KGF one of the first places in the world to receive long-distance transmitted hydroelectric power, and Bangalore among the first Indian cities to be electrified. Male Mahadeshwara Hills
MM Hills lies about seventy-five kilometres south-east of Kollegal, and the approach is the memorable part - seventy-seven hairpin bends climbing through the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. The temple is dedicated to Male Mahadeshwara, a saint venerated as an incarnation of Shiva, and the oral epic sung in his honour is a major tradition in Kannada folk literature. It draws very large crowds during festivals. Visit early in the day. The road is narrow, the forest stretch has wildlife including elephants, and it is not a place to be driving after dark. An SUV is more comfortable than a sedan on this approach.
Bheemeshwari and the Cauvery Sanctuary
North of Kollegal along the Cauvery, the sanctuary holds a chain of riverside camps at Bheemeshwari, Galibore and Muthathi, best known for angling - the mahseer fishing here was internationally renowned, and is now strictly catch-and-release under conservation rules. Coracle rides, zip lines, river rafting and guided nature walks operate through Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Visit for a genuinely restful two days by the river, or as a day trip from Bangalore in its own right. These camps are reached off the Kanakapura road rather than from Kollegal town, which is worth knowing when planning the routing.
Talakadu and the Buried Temples
About forty kilometres west on the Cauvery, Talakadu is one of the strangest sites in Karnataka - a medieval town swallowed by shifting sand dunes, with temples buried under them for centuries and several since excavated. The Panchalinga Darshana, when five Shiva temples are visited together, is held here at intervals of around twelve years and draws enormous crowds. Visit for the sheer oddness of walking across sand dunes to reach Hoysala and Ganga-period stone temples set below ground level. Somanathapura, the third of the UNESCO-inscribed Hoysala temples, lies a further twenty-odd kilometres and pairs naturally with it.
The Kollegal Silk Looms
The town has been a silk reeling, twisting and handloom weaving centre for generations, producing soft silk sarees on pit looms, historically supplying the Mysore royal household and once known particularly for its navilu or peacock border sarees. The Devanga and Padmasali communities are the traditional weavers, and most of the looms sit inside the town itself rather than in industrial units outside it. Visit if you have any interest in textiles - watching a jacquard pit loom working is a genuinely absorbing half hour, and buying directly from a weaver is both cheaper and more interesting than a showroom. Dhondenling Tibetan Settlement, Gundal Dam and Maradi Gudda
Three local features almost no visitor knows about. Dhondenling, established in 1974 on around three thousand acres near Kollegal, is one of the Tibetan settlements founded in Karnataka after 1959, with monastery buildings, prayer flags and a resident community - an unexpected thing to find in the Cauvery basin and worth an hour. Thirty kilometres of two-lane road running south through granite country and scrub, with the landscape opening out and the traffic thinning noticeably. This is pleasant, unhurried driving and the first stretch that feels genuinely rural. Sathanur is the turn-off point for the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary camps - Bheemeshwari, Galibore and Muthathi lie down the tracks that lead west from around here toward the river. For travellers whose destination is a fishing camp rather than Kollegal itself, this is where the itinerary diverges, and it is the main reason we recommend the Kanakapura route for those bookings. For everyone else the road continues south, and from this point on the Cauvery is never very far to the west.
Malavalli
Sugarcane Belt of Mandya
The road crosses into Mandya district and the character changes completely - dryland scrub gives way to irrigated Cauvery country, with sugarcane to the horizon, canals alongside the road and the jaggery units that process the crop locally. Halagur is a small town whose economy runs almost entirely on this, and the smell of boiling cane is unmistakable in season. Malavalli is the larger town and the junction that matters: the road west from here leads to Shivanasamudra, around twenty kilometres away, which means travellers heading for the falls turn off before reaching Kollegal at all. • Less than 12 hours before departure — 75 percent of the total trip fare. Minimal or no refund, depending on the value of the trip.
• No-show, where the vehicle has been deployed and the group is absent — 100 percent of the total trip fare. No refund; the full fare is payable.

A loaded tempo traveller takes 3 to 4 hours either way. Figures published elsewhere range up to 160 km depending on which line is measured. Neither route has a ghat section, which makes this one of the more relaxed group runs from Bangalore.

Yes, and you should, because they are quite different. Gaganachukki on the Mandya side is the taller and is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge. Bharachukki on the Chamarajanagar side is broader, with steps down toward the base and coracle rides when water levels allow. They sit about fifteen kilometres apart by road and are not visible from one another, so the transfer between them has to be in the plan. August to January gives the strongest flow; by March it thins considerably.
It depends entirely on where you are actually going, and getting it wrong costs an hour. For a day built around the falls, the turn is at Malavalli, roughly twenty kilometres short of Kollegal. For the Cauvery camps at Bheemeshwari, Galibore or Muthathi, the turn is much earlier, off the Kanakapura road near Sathanur. Only trips built around the town itself, MM Hills, Talakadu or BR Hills actually go into Kollegal. Tell us the plan at enquiry stage and the driver has the sequence worked out before departure.
MM Hills lies around seventy-five kilometres south-east of Kollegal, up seventy-seven hairpin bends through the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. A tempo traveller makes the climb without difficulty, but the smaller variants are more comfortable on the bends and we allow extra time on the schedule for it. Start early. The road is narrow, the forest stretch has elephants, and it is not somewhere to be driving after dark. Festival periods draw very large crowds and the approach congests badly, so check the calendar before fixing dates.

Talakadu with its sand-buried temples is around forty kilometres west and pairs naturally with Somanathapura, the third UNESCO-inscribed Hoysala temple, a little beyond it. BR Hills lies around thirty kilometres south and suits an overnight rather than a day trip. Tell us at quotation stage so the kilometres go into the plan, and note that distance beyond the agreed itinerary is billed at the pre-agreed rate.
No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently. We recommend it particularly for school excursions to the falls and for adventure activities at the Cauvery camps, where a group policy is usually inexpensive. We also do not operate sleeper bus services. The fleet is seated throughout: 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers, 12 to 24 seater minibuses, 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches, 13 to 17 seater Force Urbania, and 4 to 7 seater cars.

For Shivanasamudra specifically, August to January is when the falls justify the journey; the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon flow is dramatic, and by March the cascades reduce to a fraction of it.
