Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal
A seventeenth-century palace built by King Thirumalai Nayak, and a genuinely surprising building - Dravidian construction fused with Islamic and European influence, with enormous circular columns and scalloped arches enclosing a courtyard that was originally around four times its present size. What survives is the Swarga Vilasam entrance hall and the dance hall. A sound and light show runs in the evenings covering the Silappathikaram epic and the palace history. Visit for the scale of the columns, which photographs do not convey. It sits about two kilometres from the Meenakshi temple and takes around an hour.
Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple
Eight kilometres south of the city, this is the first of the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Murugan, and one of the most significant Murugan shrines in Tamil Nadu. The temple is partly rock-cut into the hillside, with shrines carved directly out of the granite, and the setting against the hill is the distinguishing feature. It draws a steady stream of devotees rather than tourists, particularly for weddings, since it is associated with Murugan marriage to Deivanai. Visit early morning. Footwear is removed at the entrance and around ninety minutes covers it including the drive out.
Alagar Kovil and Pazhamudircholai
Twenty-one kilometres north-east in the Alagar hills, Alagar Kovil is a Vishnu temple of considerable antiquity and the seat of Kallalagar, whose ceremonial journey into the Vaigai river is the centrepiece of the Chithirai festival - one of the largest temple festivals in Tamil Nadu, drawing enormous crowds. Higher up the same hill sits Pazhamudircholai, the sixth and last of the Murugan Arupadai Veedu, set in forest with a natural spring. Visit both together as a half day. The hill road is narrow in places, and the setting, with forest and water, is a genuine change from the city.
Gandhi Memorial Museum
Housed in the seventeenth-century Rani Mangammal palace, this is one of only five Gandhi museums in India sanctioned as national memorials, and it holds the blood-stained dhoti Gandhi was wearing when he was assassinated. Madurai has a specific place in the story - it was here in 1921 that Gandhi first adopted the loincloth after seeing how the rural poor dressed. The museum galleries cover the freedom movement in considerable depth. Visit for an hour, and it works particularly well as a middle-of-the-day option during the temple closure, since it is indoors and open through the afternoon.
Vandiyur Teppakulam and Samanar Hills
The Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is an enormous temple tank about five kilometres from the centre, with a central mandapam reached by boat during the Float Festival in January and February, when illuminated floats carry the deities across the water. Samanar Hills, at Keelakuyilkudi to the west, holds second-century Jain rock-cut beds and carved reliefs on a granite hillside, reached by a short climb, with a good view over the plain and almost no crowds. Steel City of Tamil Nadu
Dharmapuri is an agricultural district centre, and the significant draw nearby is Hogenakkal, forty-five kilometres east, where the Cauvery drops through a gorge and coracles run below the falls. Namakkal is the poultry capital of India, producing a very large share of the country egg supply, and the transport of eggs out of this district is visible along the highway in a way that surprises first-time travellers. The town itself holds a rock fort on a 65 metre outcrop and, at its base, the Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple with an eighteen-foot monolithic Hanuman statue carved from a single block of stone and standing open to the sky. It is a genuinely striking twenty-minute stop directly off the highway, and it is the one roadside temple on this route that we actively recommend to travellers who have time in hand.
Karur
Home Textile Capital of India
Forty-three kilometres of continuing fast four-lane highway across flat farmland, with the Kolli hills visible to the east on a clear morning. Progress here is quick and there is little to detain you. Karur sits on the Amaravathi river and is one of the oldest inhabited settlements in Tamil Nadu, with Roman coin finds pointing to ancient trade links. Today it is the home textile capital of India, exporting bed linen, curtains and furnishings worldwide, and it is also a major bus body building centre - a surprising number of the coaches on South Indian roads were built here. The Pasupatheeswarar temple in the town is old and architecturally significant. For most travellers Karur is simply the marker that Dindigul, and lunch, is an hour ahead.
Dindigul
Gateway to Kodaikanal
Seventy-seven kilometres south with the Sirumalai hills rising to the east and the landscape turning drier. Dindigul announces itself with its rock fort, a granite outcrop crowned by a hill fortification built under the Madurai Nayaks and later held by Tipu Sultan and the British. Dindigul is known nationally for two things. Its handmade locks, produced here for over a century and now carrying a GI tag, gave it the name Lock City. And Dindigul Thalappakatti biryani, made with seeraga samba rice and a distinct spice balance, originated in this town and is the single most famous food stop on the entire highway - the original establishment still operates here. For a 5:00 AM departure this lands almost exactly at lunch, which makes it the natural second halt. Beyond Dindigul the highway passes Kodai Road, the junction where travellers turn west into the Palani hills for Kodaikanal, around eighty kilometres up.
Madurai

• More than 72 hours before departure — No cancellation charge. 100 percent of the advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days.
• 48 to 72 hours before departure — 10 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 10 percent deduction.
• 24 to 48 hours before departure — 25 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 25 percent deduction.
• 12 to 24 hours before departure — 50 percent of the total trip fare. The advance is refunded less the 50 percent deduction.
• Less than 12 hours before departure — 75 percent of the total trip fare. Minimal or no refund depending on trip value.
• No-show, where the vehicle is deployed and the group is absent — 100 percent of the total trip fare. No refund. The full fare is payable.
• Cancellation by Tejas Travels due to breakdown or force majeure — No cancellation charge. 100 percent refunded within 2 working days, or a substitute vehicle is offered.

• Luxury vehicles — minimum 5-day notice for a full refund, given limited Bangalore fleet availability and wedding season demand.
• Peak dates — New Year, Diwali, Dasara and Bangalore long weekends require a minimum 48-hour notice for a full refund. Less than 24 hours is non-refundable.
• Force majeure — Bangalore bandhs, traffic disruptions and road closures attract a 100 percent refund within 2 working days regardless of notice period.
• Modifications — date changes, vehicle upgrades and route additions with more than 24 hours notice are accommodated at no penalty, subject to availability.
