Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara Temples

Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara Temples

The Hoysaleswara Temple and the adjacent Shantaleswara Temple are the centrepiece of Halebidu and together constitute the most ambitious and elaborate surviving architectural statement of the Hoysala dynasty. Construction on the Hoysaleswara Temple began in 1121 CE and was undertaken over decades by teams of sculptors working in the soft local chloritic schist soapstone, which allows for the extraordinary level of carving detail that covers every horizontal surface of the exterior walls in uninterrupted narrative and decorative bands. The Shantaleswara Temple, named for the queen Shantala, one of the consorts of King Vishnuvardhana and a renowned dancer, stands immediately adjacent and is its near-mirror image, creating a twin complex of unusual grandeur. Both temples were left without their tower superstructures when the Malik Kafur invasions halted construction, and this unfinished quality means that the attention of any visitor falls almost entirely on the sculptural programme rather than being divided between architecture and sculpture as at other temple sites. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the complex and an on-site museum houses sculptures recovered from the site. Entry to the complex is free for Indian citizens. All travellers on a Bangalore to Halebidu taxi booking plan the bulk of their visit around this complex.

Halebidu Archaeological Museum

Halebidu Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Survey of India museum within the Hoysaleswara temple complex at Halebidu houses a collection of sculptures, inscriptions and architectural fragments recovered from the site and the surrounding area that significantly deepens the understanding of the Hoysala period and its material culture. The museum displays pieces from different phases of the Hoysala sculptural tradition, including early transitional work that predates the classic style of the twelfth century, and the collection provides context for the different periods of construction, damage, repair and modification that the temple complex underwent between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries. Inscriptions recovered from the site in Sanskrit and Kannada are also displayed, and these have been important primary sources for historians studying the political and religious history of the Hoysala kingdom. The museum is housed in a building adjacent to the main temple complex and the entry is included with the site ticket. For school and college groups visiting on an educational Belur Halebidu cab from Bangalore tour, the museum typically takes an additional 30 to 40 minutes beyond the temple walk and is strongly recommended.

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, 17 kilometres from Halebidu, is the natural partner destination on any Halebidu tour package from Bangalore and is universally combined with the Hoysaleswara Temple on the same day's heritage circuit. Commissioned in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana and completed 103 years later, the Chennakeshava Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his beautiful form and is notable for having been completed with its full superstructure, unlike the Halebidu temples. The interior features 48 pillars, each carved differently, and the famous 42 Madanika bracket figures, celestial maidens in poses of beauty and grace, are among the most celebrated pieces of Indian medieval sculpture. The most discussed is the Darpana Sundari or woman with the mirror, whose hollow and movable jewellery is a subject of enduring fascination. In 2023 the Belur temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, the same designation that covers Halebidu. The 17-kilometre drive between the two towns takes approximately 30 minutes on a good road through the Hassan district countryside.

Kedareshwara Temple, Halebidu

Kedareshwara Temple, Halebidu

The Kedareshwara Temple, located approximately 500 metres from the main Hoysaleswara-Shantaleswara complex within Halebidu town, is a smaller but beautifully detailed Hoysala temple from the thirteenth century dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Kedara. The temple is built on a star-shaped platform in the characteristic Hoysala plan and the exterior carvings, while less extensive than those on the twin temples, are of comparable quality and in places more accessible to close study because the smaller scale of the building brings the carved bands closer to eye level. The temple is considerably less visited than the main complex and offers the kind of unhurried and contemplative exploration that is difficult at the more famous site during peak tourist season. Architecture and sculpture enthusiasts visiting on a one way cab Bangalore to Halebidu often specifically mention the Kedareshwara Temple as a rewarding discovery that they were glad to have included in the itinerary. The temple is maintained by the ASI and is in generally good condition.

Jain Basadis, Halebidu

Jain Basadis, Halebidu

Halebidu contains two significant Jain temples, or basadis, from the Hoysala period that reflect the religious pluralism of the dynasty, which patronised Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain traditions simultaneously. The Parsvanatha Basadi and the Adinatha Basadi are both built in the Hoysala style with the same soapstone construction and carved details as the Hindu temples, but their iconographic programme reflects Jain rather than Hindu mythology, with depictions of the Jain tirthankaras and their associated symbols and narratives. The basadis are compact and in reasonable condition, and they are typically included on the walking itinerary around the Halebidu complex without requiring a separate journey. For travellers interested in the full range of Hoysala patronage and the multicultural character of the medieval Karnataka polity, the Jain basadis are a valuable addition to the understanding of Halebidu that the Hindu temples alone cannot provide. School and college groups on a Bangalore to Halebidu cab educational tour in particular benefit from seeing the Hindu and Jain temples side by side as evidence of a politically sophisticated and religiously tolerant court culture.

Yagachi Dam and Water Adventure Park

Yagachi Dam and Water Adventure Park

Yagachi Dam, built across the Yagachi River approximately 20 kilometres from Halebidu near Belur, is the most popular recreational complement to the heritage circuit in the Hassan district and draws large numbers of families and groups who want to balance the concentrated intellectual experience of the Hoysala temples with something more physically active and outdoors-oriented. The dam is 1,280 metres long, 26 metres high and sits at 965 feet above sea level, with the reservoir behind it creating a scenic landscape of blue water framed by the gentle hills of the Western Ghats foothills. The KSTDC adventure centre on the dam offers kayaking, jet skiing, speed boating, banana boat rides and coracle rides, making it a genuinely varied activity site for different ages and energy levels. Sunset at the dam, with the water turning amber and the forested hills on the far bank in silhouette, is consistently described as one of the most peaceful experiences on the entire Hoysala circuit. Families and groups booking a Bangalore to Halebidu car rental with an overnight stay in Hassan typically plan the temples in the morning and the dam in the afternoon.

Shettihalli Rosary Church

Shettihalli Rosary Church

The Shettihalli Rosary Church is a partially submerged French Gothic church built in the 1860s by French missionaries and abandoned when the Hemavathi reservoir was filled in the 1960s, creating one of the most visually striking and photographically compelling heritage sites in all of Karnataka. The arched stone structure, roofless and covered in lichen and monsoon moss, sits at the edge of the reservoir with the waterline cutting through its walls at different heights depending on the season, and the combination of the Gothic architecture, the surrounding water and the forested hills gives the site an atmospheric quality that is quite unlike any other heritage stop in Karnataka. Between November and June when the reservoir is lower, more of the church is visible and visitors can walk inside the nave on the exposed ground. Travellers on a Bangalore to Halebidu taxi booking who are staying overnight in Hassan frequently include Shettihalli on a morning drive on the second day, typically before returning toward Bangalore via Channarayapatna and Shravanabelagola.

Gomateshwara Statue, Shravanabelagola

Gomateshwara Statue, Shravanabelagola

Shravanabelagola is located approximately 75 kilometres from Halebidu and directly on the NH 75 route that connects Bangalore to Hassan, making it the most natural first stop on a full-day Hoysala temples trip from Bangalore. The 58-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, carved from a single granite rock in 983 CE, is the world's tallest monolithic stone sculpture and a major Jain pilgrimage site that draws visitors of all backgrounds for its sheer physical scale and the extraordinary feat of the carving. The 614 rock-cut steps to the hilltop summit take around 20 to 30 minutes to climb and the view from the top, with the statue in the foreground and the plains of the Hassan district extending in every direction, is one of the finest panoramas available from any heritage site in South India. The Mahamastakabhisheka festival held every twelve years is one of the largest religious gatherings in Karnataka. Stopping at Shravanabelagola for approximately two hours on the way from Bangalore to Halebidu adds the most culturally diverse dimension to the day without significant detour.

How to Book a Tempo Traveller for Rent in Bangalore — Step by Step

Booking a tempo traveller for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps:

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

●        Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

●        Share your travel date, Bangalore pickup location (area or landmark — Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, hotel name, tech park), destination or full itinerary, number of passengers, and preferred vehicle.

●        For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.

●        For luxury vehicles, also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding, VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

●        Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.

●        The quote clearly itemizes every charge:

○        Vehicle hire rate (Rs/km or flat package)

○        Driver allowance (Rs 400 to 1,000 per day depending on vehicle class)

○        Applicable toll estimates

○        Any interstate permit if applicable — Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati

●        No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.

●        For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.

●        If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance

●        Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone.

●        A 20% advance payment of the total fare confirms the booking.

●        Payment options: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link.

●        Advance receipt within 30 minutes.

●        Confirmation includes driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location, and full billing breakdown — all in writing.

●        For luxury vehicles, the advance may be higher due to limited fleet and Bangalore peak-date demand (wedding season November to February, New Year).

Step 4 — Your Driver Arrives Early

●        Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at your confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure.

●        For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate.

●        The vehicle is clean, sanitized, fuelled, and ready.

●        For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire.

●        The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy.

●        During the trip, the driver handles all routing, toll payments, and Bangalore traffic navigation.

●        At trip end, balance payment is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional km or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Bangalore to Ooty

We had a very good experience with the traveler we booked through Tejas travels. The vehicle was clean and comfortable, and our driver was polite, cooperative, and professional throughout the trip. The entire journey was smooth and hassle-free — everything went as planned without any delays or issues. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable travel experience!

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Halebidu Tempo Traveller

Roughly 215 kilometres via NH-75 through Kunigal, Channarayapatna and Hassan, taking 4.5 to 5 hours of actual driving. Allow around 6 hours door to door with breakfast and comfort breaks. Adding Shravanabelagola brings the total to about 240 kilometres and adds roughly two hours to the day.

Comfortably, provided you leave Bangalore by 5:30 am. The two sites are only 16 kilometres apart and together need about four hours. Our drivers usually suggest Halebidu first, since the main frieze photographs better in morning light, then Belur in the afternoon. Expect to be back in Bangalore around 9 pm.

The Hoysaleswara Temple is an Archaeological Survey of India monument and is generally open from around 6:30 am to 6:30 pm daily. Entry is free or nominally priced. The archaeological museum within the grounds charges a small separate fee and is closed on Fridays. Footwear must be removed at the temple platform, and timings can shift on festival days, so confirm locally.

We operate 9, 12, 14, 17 and 18 seater tempo travellers, all air-conditioned. The 12 seater suits families, the 17 seater works for extended groups, and the 18 seater is our standard choice for school excursions and college history departments. Pushback recliner variants are available in most sizes.

Twenty per cent of the total fare is payable in advance. The balance is settled at trip end after the final garage-to-garage kilometre and hour calculation. Advance can be paid by UPI, bank transfer, card or net banking, with a receipt issued within 30 minutes.

The fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Toll and parking, interstate tax, GST, and extra driver bata for running after 9:45 pm are charged separately. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, so the closing figure may differ slightly from the initial estimate.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but individual passenger cover is not included. Travellers wanting personal accident or travel cover should arrange it independently before the trip.

If the vehicle is still running after 9:45 pm on any day of the trip, an additional driver bata applies for that day. It appears in the written quote before you confirm, so nothing is added at settlement. On a one-day Halebidu return this is common, because most groups reach Bangalore late, and we flag it upfront rather than at the end.

Yes. Licensed guides are available at the monument entrance and are worth engaging, since almost none of the narrative panels are labelled and the detail is easy to walk past. Guide fees are paid directly by the group and are not part of the vehicle quote. For school groups, booking a guide ahead through the ASI office avoids waiting.

Yes. Share your GST number and preferred invoicing format at enquiry stage. We issue a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval before travel and a final GST invoice after settlement. Registered corporate clients can opt for 30-day credit terms with monthly consolidated invoicing, and schools can be invoiced against a purchase order.
