Places to Visit in Coonoor

Sims Park
A botanical garden of around twelve hectares laid out on a slope in the middle of the town in 1874, in a semi-natural style that follows the contours rather than flattening them, with more than a thousand plant species including a good collection of conifers, magnolias and tree ferns. The annual fruit and vegetable show held here in May is a genuine local event rather than a tourist one. Visit in the morning. It is the one attraction actually inside Coonoor rather than outside it, it takes around ninety minutes, and it is a considerably calmer proposition than the Ooty botanical gardens on a long weekend.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Mysore
City of Palaces
The first three hours are the fastest of the day, on six-lane expressway. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be on the expressway before 6:15 AM, because everything downstream - the Bandipur gate and the ghat in daylight - depends on time banked here. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills; Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the most requested addition on family bookings; Maddur and its vada; Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created; and Srirangapatna on its island. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and it is the last major city before the forest - the choice of food thins considerably beyond it.

Gundlupet
Flower Town of Karnataka
South of Mysore the road narrows from expressway to good two-lane highway. Nanjangud, twenty-five kilometres out on the Kapila river, holds the very large Srikanteshwara temple and is called the Kashi of the South for the parallel with Varanasi - a forty-five minute stop for travellers with an interest. Gundlupet is the last Karnataka town of any size and genuinely worth slowing for. The fields around it are given over to marigold and sunflower cultivation, and in season the roadside turns solid gold and orange for kilometres. Practically it is the last proper fuel and food stop before Bandipur and the Tamil Nadu border, and our drivers treat it as the checkpoint where the day either is or is not on schedule for the gate.

Theppakadu
Mudumalai Gateway
The highway enters Bandipur National Park and runs nearly twenty kilometres through protected forest, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Speed limits are enforced, stopping is not permitted, and elephant, gaur and spotted deer are seen from the road regularly - the sightings are often better than people expect. This stretch closes to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM. The Tamil Nadu border comes shortly after and the road enters Mudumalai. At Theppakadu, where the elephant camp sits on the Moyar river, the two ghat routes diverge - left for Masinagudi and the Kalhatti bends, straight on for Gudalur and Pykara. Our drivers will have decided before setting out which they are taking, based on the vehicle, the group and the light remaining.

Ooty
Gentle Road to the Nilgiris
The Gudalur ascent is the longer of the two climbs and the one buses take - a sustained but manageable gradient through forest that gives way to tea as the altitude increases. The temperature drops steadily and the vegetation changes visibly over the space of half an hour, from sal and teak to eucalyptus, wattle and finally the terraced tea that defines the plateau. Near the top the road passes Pykara, where the falls and the lake sit a short distance off the highway - the lake has boating and the falls are at their best from July through December. It is a worthwhile twenty-minute stop and it is on the road rather than off it. Beyond Pykara the plateau opens out and Ooty follows, busy and built-up in a way that surprises first-time visitors expecting a quiet hill station.

Coonoor
Tea Town of the Nilgiris
The last twenty kilometres run southeast and downhill from Ooty, dropping around four hundred metres, with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway running alongside the road for much of the way - if the timing is right you will pass the train, which most passengers find is the highlight of the drive. Wellington comes first, a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with the ordered character that cantonments have everywhere. Coonoor follows, lower and warmer than Ooty and noticeably less crowded, laid out on slopes with tea estates running right to the edge of the town. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. Note that many estate bungalows and homestays around Coonoor sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes, so send us the property name at booking and we will confirm what can reach the door. A 5:30 AM departure with a proper Mysore halt puts most groups in Coonoor between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM.

Tempo Traveller Packages for the Coonoor Route
Nothing here is a fixed menu. Every quotation is built around group size, how many nights you are staying and where your property sits, but almost every enquiry on this corridor falls into one of the five shapes below.
Family Package
The dominant booking type: families taking two or three nights in the Nilgiris, staying in Coonoor precisely because Ooty is crowded. A 12 or 13 seater covers most; larger gatherings move to the 17 or 18 seater. We plan these around two fixed points rather than around distance: clearing the Bandipur gate in daylight, and taking the Gudalur ascent, which is gentler for anyone prone to travel sickness and the only sensible option for the larger vehicles. A Channapatna toy stop on the outbound leg costs twenty minutes and is the most requested addition. Drivers on family bookings are chosen for patience with the long halts a plateau itinerary involves.
Weekend and Three-Night Package
The version we most often recommend. Coonoor works as a long weekend, and the vehicle staying with your group matters more here than on almost any route we run, because the viewpoints, the falls, the tea factories and Ooty itself are spread across the plateau and local transport is thin. Three nights allows Coonoor properly, a day in Ooty, and the toy train, which needs booking well ahead. If you have train tickets we build the itinerary around the timing, since the schedule is fixed and everything else can move. Quotes on this package carry a stated local-running allowance rather than a bare point-to-point figure.
Budget Package
For groups whose priority is the lowest defensible per-head figure. Spread across twelve or thirteen passengers a three-night Nilgiris trip works out well below the equivalent in separate cabs, and the Gudalur ascent needs no vehicle upgrade to be comfortable. Budget means a standard AC 12 seater tempo traveller bangalore variant and a tight itinerary: the viewpoints, one falls, one tea factory and a day in Ooty. It does not mean an older vehicle or a less experienced driver, since fleet and driver standards do not change between tiers, and on a ghat road that matters more than on a highway.
Corporate Package
The Nilgiris are a common offsite destination and the estate properties around Coonoor suit small team stays well. The 17 and 18 seater variants take a full team, and for larger groups we run two vehicles on one schedule. Documentation is handled up front: GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice at quotation stage for purchase-order approval, monthly consolidated billing and thirty-day credit terms for signed accounts. The property access question matters most on corporate bookings, since estate venues are exactly the ones on narrow lanes, so we confirm vehicle access before the booking is placed. Our corporate travels bangalore desk handles ongoing requirements and our outstation tempo traveller bangalore team builds the itinerary.
Luxury Package
For senior family groups, guest hosting and anyone who wants the ghat to be comfortable rather than merely completed. This tier covers our 9 to 13 seater luxury tempo traveller bangalore range with high-back recliners, footrests, reading lights, blackout curtains and per-seat charging, and extends to the Force Urbania. On this route the value is specific and doubles up: the smaller premium variants ride a sustained hill climb noticeably better at the end of a seven-hour day, and they are also the vehicles most likely to reach an estate property at the top of a narrow lane. Where a group includes anyone prone to travel sickness on hill roads, this is the tier we recommend.
Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment
Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for this corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged and everything inside it is stated before you confirm. Twenty percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.
Included in the quoted fare
• Base fare and fuel charges
• Driver allowance
Not included in the quoted fare
• Toll and parking charges
• Interstate tax and permit charges
• Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra
• Final rental calculated on total kilometres and hours, garage to garage
• GST
Three points are specific to this route. First, the Tamil Nadu interstate permit applies since the road crosses the border at Bandipur; it is quoted as a separate line at actual, arranged in advance, and it scales with seating capacity, so an 18 seater carries a higher figure than a 12 seater and we quote it before you choose the vehicle. Second, toy train tickets, garden and viewpoint entry fees and tea factory tour charges are paid on site and sit outside the vehicle fare. Third, local running on the plateau adds up more than people expect: the viewpoints, the falls, Ooty and the tea factories are spread across a wide area, and a proper three-night itinerary will run well over two hundred kilometres of local driving. Because the final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres, that running is part of the figure, which is why our weekend package quotes carry a stated allowance for it rather than a bare point-to-point number.
Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on a route with a sustained ghat climb we recommend it more strongly than on plain highway trips. For college and school groups a group policy is usually inexpensive and often required by the institution. We also do not operate sleeper coaches; the fleet on this route is seated tempo travellers in the 8 to 18 band.

How to Book a Tempo Traveller for Rent in Bangalore
Booking a tempo traveller for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under five minutes. Follow these four steps.
Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels
• Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Share your travel date and your Bangalore pickup location — area, landmark, building, hotel or tech park. Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala and the KIA airport are all routine.
• Send us the name of your Coonoor property. Many estate bungalows and homestays sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced lanes, and we will confirm what can reach the door before you book rather than after you arrive.
• Share the number of passengers, your preferred vehicle tier — Standard AC or Luxury AC — and your Nilgiri Mountain Railway timing if you have tickets, since the itinerary is built around it.
• For corporate bookings, share your GST number and preferred invoicing format. For premium vehicles, mention the occasion — corporate, wedding or VIP event — so the team can allocate the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.
Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote
• Within 2 hours of your enquiry, a written quote arrives by WhatsApp or email.
• The quote itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate in rupees per kilometre or as a flat package, driver allowance, the local-running allowance for the plateau, applicable toll estimates, the Tamil Nadu interstate permit as its own line, and GST.
• No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.
• For corporate clients requiring reimbursement approval, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.
• If you want to compare two seating sizes or the standard and luxury tiers, request both quotes at the same time. Permit charges differ between them, so ask for both figures.
Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay the Advance
• Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm by WhatsApp or phone.
• A 20 percent advance payment on the total fare confirms the booking and holds the vehicle for your date.
• Pay by UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), by NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer, or by credit or debit card through a payment link.
• The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.
• Your confirmation includes the driver name and mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location and the full billing breakdown, all in writing.
• For the April and May peak, New Year and long weekends, book well ahead since Nilgiris fleet availability tightens quickly.
Step 4 — Your Driver Arrives Early
• Your assigned driver reaches the confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before the scheduled departure.
• For airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate.
• The vehicle arrives clean, sanitized, fuelled and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings the driver is in formal attire.
• The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy.
• During the trip the driver handles all routing, toll payments, the Bandipur gate timing, the border checkpost and the ghat ascent.
• At trip end the balance is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional kilometres or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.
Quick booking: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your group size, Bangalore pickup location, Coonoor property name and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.
Payment Methods
Tejas Travels accepts all major digital and traditional payment methods for both the advance and the final settlement at trip end.
• UPI — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM UPI and Amazon Pay. The fastest method, with instant confirmation on receipt. Recommended for all advance deposits.
• Bank transfer — NEFT, IMPS and RTGS. Used for corporate clients and larger advances. IMPS is instant; NEFT can take up to 2 hours.
• Credit or debit card — Visa, Mastercard and RuPay, through a payment link sent to your registered mobile or email. Valid for the advance and for full payment.
• Net banking — all major Indian banks, through a payment link by WhatsApp or email. Preferred for Bangalore IT corporate purchase-order approvals.
• Cash — accepted for the balance at trip end, with a receipt issued. The advance itself must be digital for the booking to be confirmed.
• Corporate credit — 30-day credit terms for signed corporate accounts, with monthly consolidated invoicing available.
Payment note: a 20 percent advance confirms your booking and guarantees vehicle availability on your date. No advance means no confirmed booking. A digital receipt is issued within 30 minutes of every payment.

Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Coonoor Tempo Traveller
The bangalore to coonoor distance is around 290 km via Mysore, Gundlupet, Bandipur and Gudalur to Ooty, then twenty kilometres down to Coonoor. The shorter Masinagudi and Kalhatti line runs closer to 275 km, and the long way round through Coimbatore and Mettupalayam is roughly 400 km. A loaded tempo traveller takes 7 to 8 hours with one proper halt: fast expressway to Mysore, then progressively slower through the forest and up the ghat.
The Gudalur and Pykara climb, as standard for the whole 8 to 18 seater band, and it is worth explaining why rather than leaving it as a preference. It is longer and gentler, with a better surface, and it is the route buses take. The Masinagudi and Kalhatti alternative is shorter and spectacular but carries thirty-six very steep hairpin bends and is not open to buses and heavy vehicles; it is not a road for a loaded group vehicle, an inexperienced driver, or dusk. If your departure is late and the Bandipur gate becomes unreachable, we route the long way via Coimbatore and Mettupalayam instead rather than improvising.
Part of it. The highway through Bandipur National Park is closed to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM, a restriction imposed after repeated wildlife deaths on the road. There is no discretion at the gate: arrive at 9:15 PM and you wait until six in the morning. Our drivers plan the day around the timings and will restructure the itinerary rather than gamble on reaching it, which on a group booking matters twice over, since a split convoy can end up on opposite sides of a closed gate.
Ask us before you book, because the honest answer is sometimes no. Many estate bungalows and homestays around Coonoor sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes. A car reaches most of them; a 17 or 18 seater does not reach all of them. Send us the property name at enquiry stage and we will confirm what can get to the door, and where it cannot we arrange the last stretch rather than leaving a group standing on a lane with luggage. This is the most common avoidable problem on this route and it is entirely solvable in advance.
Coonoor, for most groups. It is twenty kilometres below Ooty, four hundred metres lower and therefore slightly warmer, and it is a working tea town rather than a resort, so the crowds that fill Ooty on a long weekend largely do not come down. Ooty has more attractions, more hotels and the botanical gardens, and it is easy to visit from Coonoor for a day. The pattern we book most often is three nights in Coonoor with a day trip up. If your group specifically wants the Ooty lake and gardens and the busier atmosphere, stay there instead.
A 12 seater starts from around Rs 15,000 on the 580 km garage-to-garage basis, with fuel included. Three-night itineraries are quoted on the day-wise plan with a stated local-running allowance for the plateau, which is the honest way to price this route. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate, the Tamil Nadu permit and GST separately, and arrives in writing within two hours.
Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax and permit charges, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. The Tamil Nadu permit is quoted as its own line at actual and scales with seating capacity. Toy train tickets, garden and viewpoint entry and tea factory tour charges are paid on site. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage back to our garage, and local running on the plateau is part of that total, which is why weekend quotes carry a stated allowance for it. A 20 percent advance confirms the booking, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes.
Yes, and you should. The line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section is the only rack railway in India, a steam-hauled climb using rack and pinion to manage gradients no ordinary locomotive could take. Booking is essential and it sells out well ahead, particularly in season, and for fifteen people together that means booking as early as you can. Many travellers do the shorter Coonoor to Ooty leg instead. If you have tickets, tell us the timing and we build the day around it, since the train schedule is fixed and everything else can move.
No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on a route with a sustained ghat climb we recommend it more strongly than on plain highway trips; for college and school groups a group policy is usually inexpensive. We also do not operate sleeper bus services. The fleet is seated throughout: 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers, 12 to 24 seater minibuses, 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches, 13 to 17 seater Force Urbania, and 4 to 7 seater cars.
October to May. April and May are the peak season and Ooty fills completely, which is exactly when Coonoor is worth choosing instead: busy but not overwhelmed. October to February is cooler and clearer, with the best visibility from Dolphins Nose and Lambs Rock in the early morning. The southwest monsoon from June brings heavy rain, persistent mist on the ghats and leeches on the walking trails, though the falls are at their best from July onward. Book vehicles well ahead for April and May, since Nilgiris availability tightens across the whole fleet.
