Places to Visit in Coonoor
Sims Park

Dolphins Nose and Lambs Rock
The two viewpoints that define Coonoor, on the same road east of the town. Lambs Rock, closer in, looks out over the Coimbatore plains a kilometre and a half below - on a clear morning you can see a very long way. Visit early, because both cloud over by mid-morning through much of the year, and the whole point is the view. The road out passes through tea estate and forest and is pleasant in itself.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The line from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Mountain Railways of India, and the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section is the only rack railway in the country - a steam-hauled climb using a rack and pinion system to manage gradients no adhesion locomotive could take. It is among the great railway journeys in India. Booking is essential and the train sells out well ahead, particularly in season. Many travellers do the Coonoor to Ooty leg as a shorter ride. The Coonoor station itself is worth ten minutes even without a ticket.
The Tea Estates and Factories
Coonoor is the centre of the Nilgiri tea trade, and the estates run right up to the edge of the town. Several factories run visitor tours covering withering, rolling, oxidation and drying, finishing with a tasting - Highfield is the best known but there are others, and the smaller ones are often the more interesting. The Tea Museum at Dolphins Nose road covers the history of the industry in the hills. Visit a factory when it is actually processing, which is generally in the second half of the day. This is the single most characteristic thing to do in Coonoor and the one that explains the town.
Catherine Falls and Laws Falls
Catherine Falls, near Kotagiri around twenty kilometres out, is a two-tiered drop of roughly 250 feet and among the highest in the Nilgiris, viewed from a point reached by a rough track off the main road. Laws Falls, closer to Coonoor on the Mettupalayam road, is smaller and easier - a drop of around thirty metres in a wooded setting beside the ghat road. Visit either between July and December when there is genuine water; both reduce considerably by March. The approach to Catherine Falls is rough enough that a higher vehicle is more comfortable, and we will say so if it is on your list.
Droog Fort and Wellington
Droog, around fifteen kilometres from Coonoor, is a ruined hill fort at about 6,000 feet that was held by Tipu Sultan - reached by a trek of a few kilometres from the road end through tea and shola forest, with a view that on a clear day takes in a very large part of the Nilgiris. It is a proper walk rather than a viewpoint. Wellington, between Coonoor and Ooty, is a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with a distinctly ordered colonial character. Visit Droog if your group walks; Wellington is worth driving through in any case on the way to Ooty.

South of Mysore the road narrows from expressway to good two-lane highway. Nanjangud, twenty-five kilometres out on the Kapila river, holds the very large Srikanteshwara temple and is called the Kashi of the South for the parallel with Varanasi - a forty-five minute stop for travellers with an interest. Gundlupet is the last Karnataka town of any size and genuinely worth slowing for. The fields around it are given over to marigold and sunflower cultivation, and in season the roadside turns solid gold and orange for kilometres. Practically it is the last proper fuel and food stop before Bandipur and the Tamil Nadu border, and our drivers treat it as the checkpoint where the day either is or is not on schedule for the gate.
Theppakadu
Mudumalai Gateway
The highway enters Bandipur National Park and runs nearly twenty kilometres through protected forest, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Speed limits are enforced, stopping is not permitted, and elephant, gaur and spotted deer are seen from the road regularly - the sightings are often better than people expect. This stretch closes to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM. The Tamil Nadu border comes shortly after and the road enters Mudumalai. At Theppakadu, where the elephant camp sits on the Moyar river, the two ghat routes diverge - left for Masinagudi and the Kalhatti bends, straight on for Gudalur and Pykara. Ooty
Gentle Road to the Nilgiris
The Gudalur ascent is the longer of the two climbs and the one buses take - a sustained but manageable gradient through forest that gives way to tea as the altitude increases. The temperature drops steadily and the vegetation changes visibly over the space of half an hour, from sal and teak to eucalyptus, wattle and finally the terraced tea that defines the plateau. Near the top the road passes Pykara, where the falls and the lake sit a short distance off the highway - the lake has boating and the falls are at their best from July through December. It is a worthwhile twenty-minute stop and it is on the road rather than off it. Beyond Pykara the plateau opens out and Ooty follows, busy and built-up in a way that surprises first-time visitors expecting a quiet hill station.
Coonoor
Tea Town of the Nilgiris
The last twenty kilometres run southeast and downhill from Ooty, dropping around four hundred metres, with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway running alongside the road for much of the way - if the timing is right you will pass the train, which most passengers find is the highlight of the drive. Wellington comes first, a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with the ordered character that cantonments have everywhere. Coonoor follows, lower and warmer than Ooty and noticeably less crowded, laid out on slopes with tea estates running right to the edge of the town. The bangalore to coonoor distance is around 290 km via Mysore, Gundlupet, Bandipur and Gudalur to Ooty, then twenty kilometres down to Coonoor. The shorter Masinagudi and Kalhatti line runs closer to 275 km, and the long way round through Coimbatore and Mettupalayam is roughly 400 km. A loaded tempo traveller takes 7 to 8 hours with one proper halt: fast expressway to Mysore, then progressively slower through the forest and up the ghat.
The Gudalur and Pykara climb, as standard for the whole 8 to 18 seater band, and it is worth explaining why rather than leaving it as a preference. It is longer and gentler, with a better surface, and it is the route buses take. The Masinagudi and Kalhatti alternative is shorter and spectacular but carries thirty-six very steep hairpin bends and is not open to buses and heavy vehicles; it is not a road for a loaded group vehicle, an inexperienced driver, or dusk. If your departure is late and the Bandipur gate becomes unreachable, we route the long way via Coimbatore and Mettupalayam instead rather than improvising.

The highway through Bandipur National Park is closed to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM, a restriction imposed after repeated wildlife deaths on the road. There is no discretion at the gate: arrive at 9:15 PM and you wait until six in the morning. Our drivers plan the day around the timings and will restructure the itinerary rather than gamble on reaching it, which on a group booking matters twice over, since a split convoy can end up on opposite sides of a closed gate.
Ask us before you book, because the honest answer is sometimes no. Many estate bungalows and homestays around Coonoor sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes. A car reaches most of them; a 17 or 18 seater does not reach all of them. Send us the property name at enquiry stage and we will confirm what can get to the door, and where it cannot we arrange the last stretch rather than leaving a group standing on a lane with luggage. This is the most common avoidable problem on this route and it is entirely solvable in advance.
Coonoor, for most groups. It is twenty kilometres below Ooty, four hundred metres lower and therefore slightly warmer, and it is a working tea town rather than a resort, so the crowds that fill Ooty on a long weekend largely do not come down. Ooty has more attractions, more hotels and the botanical gardens, and it is easy to visit from Coonoor for a day. The pattern we book most often is three nights in Coonoor with a day trip up. If your group specifically wants the Ooty lake and gardens and the busier atmosphere, stay there instead.
A 12 seater starts from around Rs 15,000 on the 580 km garage-to-garage basis, with fuel included. Three-night itineraries are quoted on the day-wise plan with a stated local-running allowance for the plateau, which is the honest way to price this route. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate, the Tamil Nadu permit and GST separately, and arrives in writing within two hours.

The Tamil Nadu permit is quoted as its own line at actual and scales with seating capacity. Toy train tickets, garden and viewpoint entry and tea factory tour charges are paid on site. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage back to our garage, and local running on the plateau is part of that total, which is why weekend quotes carry a stated allowance for it. A 20 percent advance confirms the booking, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes.
Yes, and you should. The line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section is the only rack railway in India, a steam-hauled climb using rack and pinion to manage gradients no ordinary locomotive could take. Booking is essential and it sells out well ahead, particularly in season, and for fifteen people together that means booking as early as you can. Many travellers do the shorter Coonoor to Ooty leg instead. If you have tickets, tell us the timing and we build the day around it, since the train schedule is fixed and everything else can move.
No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on a route with a sustained ghat climb we recommend it more strongly than on plain highway trips; for college and school groups a group policy is usually inexpensive. We also do not operate sleeper bus services. October to May. April and May are the peak season and Ooty fills completely, which is exactly when Coonoor is worth choosing instead: busy but not overwhelmed. October to February is cooler and clearer, with the best visibility from Dolphins Nose and Lambs Rock in the early morning. The southwest monsoon from June brings heavy rain, persistent mist on the ghats and leeches on the walking trails, though the falls are at their best from July onward. Book vehicles well ahead for April and May, since Nilgiris availability tightens across the whole fleet.
