Places to Visit in Kannur

St Angelo Fort and the Arakkal Museum

St Angelo Fort and the Arakkal Museum

St Angelo Fort was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese viceroy, then held by the Dutch, sold to the Arakkal family, and finally taken by the British - a laterite triangle on a headland with a moat, bastions and a view over the Mappila Bay fishing harbour that is among the best in the city. Nearby, the Arakkal Museum occupies part of the palace of the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal dynasty in Kerala, whose rulers held Kannur and the Lakshadweep islands. Visit both together in a morning. They tell the story of a coastline that was fought over by four European powers because of what grew inland.

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Around fifteen kilometres south of the city, this is the longest drive-in beach in Asia - roughly four kilometres of firm black sand on which vehicles are permitted to drive, with a natural rock barrier that keeps the water calm enough for swimming along much of it. It has appeared on international lists of the best beaches to drive on. Visit in the late afternoon into sunset, which is when it is at its best and busiest. Driving conditions depend entirely on the tide and the sand, and stretches can be soft, so follow local direction on where to enter and do not take a vehicle onto the sand without checking.

Payyambalam Beach and Ezhimala

Payyambalam Beach and Ezhimala

Payyambalam is the main city beach, a long clean stretch with a landscaped garden and a large sculpture of a mother and child by the artist Kanayi Kunhiraman, and it is where Kannur goes in the evening. Ezhimala, around fifty-five kilometres north, is a cluster of hills rising straight out of the sea with a beach at their foot - it holds the Indian Naval Academy, so access to parts is restricted, but the setting is extraordinary and there are medicinal herbs on the slopes with a long local reputation. Visit Payyambalam for an easy evening and Ezhimala as a half-day drive up a genuinely beautiful stretch of coast.

Parassinikkadavu and Theyyam

Parassinikkadavu and Theyyam

The Parassinikkadavu Muthappan Temple on the Valapattanam river is unusual in that Theyyam is performed here daily rather than seasonally, which makes it the one reliable place to see the art form outside the main season. Theyyam itself is a ritual performance in which the costumed performer, drawn largely from specific communities, is understood to become the deity and is addressed as such - elaborate headdresses, face painting, fire and drumming, staged at village shrines usually through the night. The main season runs roughly December to April. If Theyyam is your reason for coming, tell us your dates and we will plan around the kavu schedules, which are local and not centrally published.

Thalassery - Circus, Cricket and Biryani

Thalassery - Circus, Cricket and Biryani

Twenty kilometres south, Thalassery is a town with an improbable number of firsts. The Indian circus tradition began here, when Keeleri Kunhikannan started training performers in the late nineteenth century, and the town supplied circus artists across the country for generations. Cricket is said to have been first played in India here by British traders. And Thalassery biryani - short-grain kaima rice, distinct spicing, cooked separately and layered - is the most celebrated of Kerala biryanis. There is also Thalassery Fort from 1708 and Overbury Folly, a hilltop viewpoint. Visit for the food alone if nothing else; a meal here is a legitimate reason to break the journey.

The Kannur Handlooms

The Kannur Handlooms

Kannur is one of the major handloom centres of India, with weaving cooperatives around Kanhirode and elsewhere in the district producing furnishing fabric, bed linen and shirting supplied nationally and exported. The looms are worked in cooperative sheds rather than tourist showrooms, and visiting one is a genuinely interesting hour - the scale of a working handloom shed with dozens of looms running at once is not what most visitors expect. Ask us to arrange it at booking, since it is not a signposted attraction. Buying directly is both cheaper and more interesting than a retail outlet, and it is the most characteristic thing you can take home from this district.

Tempo Traveller Packages for the Kannur Route

Nothing here is a fixed menu. Every quotation is built around group size, itinerary and season, but almost every enquiry on this corridor falls into one of the five shapes below.

Family and Wedding Package

The dominant booking type: families travelling to north Malabar for weddings and functions, often three generations with a fortnight of luggage. A 17 or 18 seater is the usual choice here precisely because of the boot and overhead capacity, and for larger parties we run two vehicles on one schedule. We plan around the forest gate rather than around distance, since a late departure removes the shortest road from the options entirely. A Channapatna toy stop on the outbound leg costs twenty minutes and is the most requested addition. Drivers on family bookings are chosen for patience with the extended halts a long day needs.

Theyyam and Cultural Package

A genuinely distinct booking on this route. Theyyam runs at village shrines from roughly December to April, and these are local events rather than ticketed shows: schedules are set kavu by kavu, are not centrally published, performances usually run through the night, and the locations are small villages rather than named attractions. We arrange transport around whatever schedule you have confirmed locally, including the overnight running Theyyam involves, and our drivers know the district well enough to find shrines a navigation app will not. On a group booking the parked vehicle becomes the base for the night, which is the practical argument for the larger variants. Tell us your dates early; the good weeks fill.

Budget Package

For groups whose priority is the lowest defensible per-head figure on a long drop. Spread across twelve or thirteen passengers, this route works out well below the equivalent in separate cabs or in train fares plus local transfers once door-to-door convenience is counted. Budget means a standard AC 12 seater tempo traveller bangalore variant and a direct itinerary. It does not mean an older vehicle or a less experienced driver, since fleet and driver standards do not change between tiers. One route-specific caveat: if road surface reports on the Nagarhole section are poor, we will say so at quotation stage rather than after you have committed.

Corporate Package

For institutional travel, conference movements and team trips into Wayanad and Malabar. The 17 and 18 seater variants suit full teams. Documentation is handled up front: GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice at quotation stage for purchase-order approval, monthly consolidated billing and thirty-day credit terms for signed accounts. On a route with an interstate permit and a hard gate closure, the value of a managed booking is that the compliance and the timing are somebody else’s problem. Our corporate travels bangalore desk handles ongoing requirements and our outstation tempo traveller bangalore team builds the itinerary.

Luxury Package

For senior family groups, guest hosting and anyone who wants an eight-hour drive to be comfortable rather than merely completed. This tier covers our 9 to 13 seater luxury tempo traveller bangalore range with high-back recliners, footrests, reading lights, blackout curtains and per-seat charging, and extends to the Force Urbania, which is a strong fit here for its combination of comfort and manoeuvrability on the ghat. On a route that combines expressway, a variable-surface forest road and a descent, suspension and ride quality are functional rather than cosmetic, and this is the tier we most often recommend where older passengers are travelling.

Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment

Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for this corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged and everything inside it is stated before you confirm. Twenty percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.

Included in the quoted fare

• Base fare and fuel charges

• Driver allowance

Not included in the quoted fare

• Toll and parking charges

• Interstate tax and permit charges

• Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra

• Final rental calculated on total kilometres and hours, garage to garage

• GST

Three points matter on this route. First, the Kerala interstate permit and entry charges are quoted as a separate line at actual rather than folded into the base fare, and we arrange the permit in advance so nothing is held up at the border. Note that permit charges scale with seating capacity, so an 18 seater carries a higher figure than a 12 seater, and it is quoted before you choose the vehicle rather than after. Second, if the routing changes on the day, whether because of a poor surface report on the Nagarhole section or a late departure that forces the longer Gundlupet line, the additional kilometres are billed at the pre-agreed per-kilometre rate, and we will tell you the likely difference between routes at quotation stage. Third, the driver bata clause after 9:45 PM applies as normal, which is worth noting particularly for Theyyam bookings, since performances routinely run through the night and the vehicle is with you for it.

Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on a route through forest country with a ghat descent we recommend it more strongly than on ordinary highway trips. We also do not operate sleeper coaches; the fleet on this route is seated tempo travellers in the 8 to 18 band.

How to Book a Tempo Traveller for Rent in Bangalore

Booking a tempo traveller for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under five minutes. Follow these four steps.

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

• Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

• Share your travel date and your Bangalore pickup location — area, landmark, building, hotel or tech park. Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala and the KIA airport are all routine.

• Share the destination or the full itinerary, the number of passengers, and your preferred vehicle tier — Standard AC or Luxury AC.

• For airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.

• For corporate bookings, share your GST number and preferred invoicing format. For premium vehicles, mention the occasion — corporate, wedding or VIP event — so the team can allocate the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

• Within 2 hours of your enquiry, a written quote arrives by WhatsApp or email.

• The quote itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate in rupees per kilometre or as a flat package, driver allowance, applicable toll estimates, the Kerala interstate permit as its own line, and GST.

• No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.

• For corporate clients requiring reimbursement approval, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.

• If you want to compare two seating sizes or the standard and luxury tiers, request both quotes at the same time. Permit charges differ between them, so ask for both figures.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay the Advance

• Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm by WhatsApp or phone.

• A 20 percent advance payment on the total fare confirms the booking and holds the vehicle for your date.

• Pay by UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), by NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer, or by credit or debit card through a payment link.

• The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.

• Your confirmation includes the driver name and mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location and the full billing breakdown, all in writing.

• For the Theyyam season, Onam, the north Malabar wedding calendar and long weekends, book well ahead since fleet availability tightens quickly.

Step 4 — Your Driver Arrives Early

• Your assigned driver reaches the confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before the scheduled departure.

• For airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate.

• The vehicle arrives clean, sanitized, fuelled and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings the driver is in formal attire.

• The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy.

• During the trip the driver handles all routing, toll payments, forest gate timings and the border checkpost.

• At trip end the balance is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional kilometres or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick booking: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your group size, Bangalore pickup location, destination and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.

Payment Methods

Tejas Travels accepts all major digital and traditional payment methods for both the advance and the final settlement at trip end.

• UPI — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM UPI and Amazon Pay. The fastest method, with instant confirmation on receipt. Recommended for all advance deposits.

• Bank transfer — NEFT, IMPS and RTGS. Used for corporate clients and larger advances. IMPS is instant; NEFT can take up to 2 hours.

• Credit or debit card — Visa, Mastercard and RuPay, through a payment link sent to your registered mobile or email. Valid for the advance and for full payment.

• Net banking — all major Indian banks, through a payment link by WhatsApp or email. Preferred for Bangalore IT corporate purchase-order approvals.

• Cash — accepted for the balance at trip end, with a receipt issued. The advance itself must be digital for the booking to be confirmed.

• Corporate credit — 30-day credit terms for signed corporate accounts, with monthly consolidated invoicing available.

Payment note: a 20 percent advance confirms your booking and guarantees vehicle availability on your date. No advance means no confirmed booking. A digital receipt is issued within 30 minutes of every payment.

Cancellation Policy

Tejas Travels maintains a fair, transparent and tiered cancellation policy. All terms are communicated in writing at booking confirmation, with no hidden conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kannur Tempo Traveller

The bangalore to kannur distance is around 320 to 340 km via Mysore, Hunsur, Nagarhole, Kutta, Mananthavady and the Periya ghat, which is the shortest line. The Gundlupet and Sulthan Bathery route runs longer at roughly 360 to 380 km. A loaded tempo traveller takes 7 to 8 hours 30 minutes either way with one proper halt. The Bangalore to Mysore stretch is fast; everything after Hunsur is slower than the map suggests because of forest speed limits, variable road surface and the ghat descent.

The Nagarhole route is the shortest and the better drive, but traffic through the forest is not permitted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM and two-wheelers are barred entirely. Road surface between Hunsur and the Kerala border has historically been variable and we check rather than assume, which matters more for a loaded 17 or 18 seater than for a car. For late departures, poor surface reports, or itineraries that include Wayanad anyway, we use the longer Gundlupet and Sulthan Bathery line, which carries its own Bandipur night closure from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. We confirm which road we are taking before you travel.

For eight to thirteen passengers the 12 or 13 seater at Rs 22 per km is the best value and the most comfortable on the Periya ghat. For fourteen to eighteen, the 17 or 18 seater is the right call, and on a wedding booking the extra boot and overhead capacity usually decides it regardless of headcount. Two route-specific points: the larger variants take the ghat more slowly, so we allow extra time rather than rushing it, and the Kerala permit charge is higher for a larger vehicle, so ask for both figures when you compare. Beyond eighteen passengers we would move you to a mini bus rental in bangalore vehicle.

Tempo traveller fare starts around Rs 17,500. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.

Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax and permit charges, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. The Kerala permit is quoted as its own line at actual and scales with seating capacity. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage back to our garage. A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms the booking, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes. The late-night bata clause is worth noting for Theyyam bookings, since performances routinely run through the night.

It is the descent from the Wayanad plateau into Kannur district, winding through forest with a number of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is considerably gentler than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and usually less congested, and our fleet runs it regularly. With a full 18 seater the driver takes it at a measured pace and in daylight wherever the schedule allows. There is a third route through Kottiyoor and the Palchuram section that is markedly steeper; drivers experienced here avoid it and we do not use it without a specific reason.

The main season runs roughly December to April, though the Parassinikkadavu Muthappan Temple performs Theyyam daily through the year and is the reliable option outside it. Performances at village shrines are local events rather than ticketed shows: schedules are set kavu by kavu, are not centrally published, and usually run through the night. We arrange transport around whatever schedule you confirm locally, including overnight running, and our drivers know the district well enough to reach shrines a navigation app will not find. On a group booking the vehicle stays with you as a base through the night. Book early; the good weeks fill.

Yes, and both work well because they sit on the road rather than off it. Wayanad is directly on the route, and breaking the journey at Mananthavady or Kalpetta removes the pressure of doing the forest gate and the ghat in one day while putting Kuruva Island, Tholpetty and Edakkal within reach. Coorg is reachable through Kutta on the Nagarhole line, which makes a Coorg, Wayanad and Kannur circuit genuinely efficient on a single vehicle. No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on a route through forest country with a ghat descent we recommend it more strongly than on ordinary highway trips. We also do not operate sleeper bus services, which is worth stating plainly on a route this long. The fleet is seated throughout: 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers, 12 to 24 seater minibuses, 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches, 13 to 17 seater Force Urbania, and 4 to 7 seater cars.

October to March for weather, and December to April if Theyyam is the reason for travelling; the two overlap conveniently. June to September is the southwest monsoon, when Malabar takes very heavy rainfall, the ghat sections are at their most demanding, and Theyyam is largely out of season. The beaches are at their best from November onward, and Muzhappilangad in particular depends on tide and sand conditions that are far more reliable outside the monsoon.
