Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach
Around fifteen kilometres south of the city, this is the longest drive-in beach in Asia - roughly four kilometres of firm black sand on which vehicles are permitted to drive, with a natural rock barrier that keeps the water calm enough for swimming along much of it. Theyyam itself is a ritual performance in which the costumed performer, drawn largely from specific communities, is understood to become the deity and is addressed as such - elaborate headdresses, face painting, fire and drumming, staged at village shrines usually through the night. Twenty kilometres south, Thalassery is a town with an improbable number of firsts. The Indian circus tradition began here, when Keeleri Kunhikannan started training performers in the late nineteenth century, and the town supplied circus artists across the country for generations. Cricket is said to have been first played in India here by British traders. And Thalassery biryani - short-grain kaima rice, distinct spicing, cooked separately and layered - is the most celebrated of Kerala biryanis. There is also Thalassery Fort from 1708 and Overbury Folly, a hilltop viewpoint. Visit for the food alone if nothing else; a meal here is a legitimate reason to break the journey.
The Kannur Handlooms
Kannur is one of the major handloom centres of India, with weaving cooperatives around Kanhirode and elsewhere in the district producing furnishing fabric, bed linen and shirting supplied nationally and exported. The looms are worked in cooperative sheds rather than tourist showrooms, and visiting one is a genuinely interesting hour - the scale of a working handloom shed with dozens of looms running at once is not what most visitors expect. Forty-five kilometres north-west of Mysore on good two-lane road through farmland. Hunsur is a working market town built around timber, tobacco and the surrounding agricultural belt, and it also holds one of the larger Tibetan settlements in Karnataka at Bylakuppe nearby, though that lies off this particular line toward Kushalnagar. For this journey Hunsur matters as the decision point and the last reliable service stop before the forest. From here the road turns south-west toward the Nagarhole gate, and beyond that there is essentially nothing until Kutta - no fuel worth relying on, limited food, and patchy mobile coverage through the forest stretch. Nagarhole
Rajiv Gandhi National Park
The road enters Nagarhole and runs roughly thirty kilometres through protected forest, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and one of the finest wildlife habitats in the country. Elephant, gaur, spotted deer and langur are commonly seen from the road, and tiger and leopard are present though rarely visible. Speed breakers are frequent and speed limits are enforced. Two rules matter here. Traffic through the Nagarhole stretch is not permitted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, and two-wheelers are barred from this forest road entirely. There is no discretion at the gate. Road surface through and immediately after this section has historically been variable and is worth checking rather than assuming. Kutta, just past the exit gate, is the last Karnataka settlement and the only place between Hunsur and Mananthavady with water, food and toilets, so it is the natural short break even though most travellers would rather press on.
Mananthavady
Northern Capital of Wayanad
The Kerala border comes shortly after Kutta and the change is immediate - wider road, more traffic, and the dense evergreen character of the Wayanad plateau. Tholpetty, the northern range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, is the first attraction on this side and safari jeeps cluster along the roadside here. Kattikulam follows, with the turn for Kuruva Island a few kilometres off the highway - a cluster of uninhabited river islands on the Kabini, reached by raft, and worth a half day if the itinerary allows. Mananthavady is the northern capital of Wayanad and the point where all the routes from Karnataka converge before the descent. It holds the tomb of Pazhassi Raja, the Kottayam ruler who led a guerrilla campaign against the East India Company across these forests for more than a decade before his death in 1805 - a significant figure in Kerala history and commemorated with a memorial and museum. It is also the last town of any size before the ghat, and a sensible place to stop.
Thalassery
Birthplace of the Indian Circus.
The Periya ghat carries the road off the Wayanad plateau down into Kannur district through forest, in a sequence of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is a gentler descent than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and generally less congested, but it is still a ghat and our drivers take it at a measured pace, in daylight wherever the schedule allows. The temperature climbs noticeably on the way down and the vegetation shifts from plateau forest to coastal Malabar within twenty minutes. At the bottom the road runs through Iritty and Koothuparamba toward the coast. The last twenty kilometres run north along the coast, passing Muzhappilangad and Dharmadam Island on the way, with the sea intermittently visible to the west. This is a densely settled coastal strip rather than open road, and progress is steady rather than fast. Kannur was the seat of the Kolathiri rajas and later the Arakkal dynasty, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, and it was fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British in turn because of the pepper trade that came down from the hills behind it. The bangalore to kannur distance is around 320 to 340 km via Mysore, Hunsur, Nagarhole, Kutta, Mananthavady and the Periya ghat, which is the shortest line. The Gundlupet and Sulthan Bathery route runs longer at roughly 360 to 380 km. A loaded tempo traveller takes 7 to 8 hours 30 minutes either way with one proper halt. The Bangalore to Mysore stretch is fast; everything after Hunsur is slower than the map suggests because of forest speed limits, variable road surface and the ghat descent.
The Nagarhole route is the shortest and the better drive, but traffic through the forest is not permitted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM and two-wheelers are barred entirely. Road surface between Hunsur and the Kerala border has historically been variable and we check rather than assume, which matters more for a loaded 17 or 18 seater than for a car. For late departures, poor surface reports, or itineraries that include Wayanad anyway, we use the longer Gundlupet and Sulthan Bathery line, which carries its own Bandipur night closure from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. We confirm which road we are taking before you travel.
For eight to thirteen passengers the 12 or 13 seater at Rs 22 per km is the best value and the most comfortable on the Periya ghat. For fourteen to eighteen, the 17 or 18 seater is the right call, and on a wedding booking the extra boot and overhead capacity usually decides it regardless of headcount. Two route-specific points: the larger variants take the ghat more slowly, so we allow extra time rather than rushing it, and the Kerala permit charge is higher for a larger vehicle, so ask for both figures when you compare. Beyond eighteen passengers we would move you to a mini bus rental in bangalore vehicle.
Tempo traveller fare starts around Rs 17,500. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.

It is the descent from the Wayanad plateau into Kannur district, winding through forest with a number of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is considerably gentler than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and usually less congested, and our fleet runs it regularly. With a full 18 seater the driver takes it at a measured pace and in daylight wherever the schedule allows. There is a third route through Kottiyoor and the Palchuram section that is markedly steeper; drivers experienced here avoid it and we do not use it without a specific reason.
The main season runs roughly December to April, though the Parassinikkadavu Muthappan Temple performs Theyyam daily through the year and is the reliable option outside it. Performances at village shrines are local events rather than ticketed shows: schedules are set kavu by kavu, are not centrally published, and usually run through the night. We arrange transport around whatever schedule you confirm locally, including overnight running, and our drivers know the district well enough to reach shrines a navigation app will not find. On a group booking the vehicle stays with you as a base through the night. Book early; the good weeks fill.
Yes, and both work well because they sit on the road rather than off it. Wayanad is directly on the route, and breaking the journey at Mananthavady or Kalpetta removes the pressure of doing the forest gate and the ghat in one day while putting Kuruva Island, Tholpetty and Edakkal within reach. Coorg is reachable through Kutta on the Nagarhole line, which makes a Coorg, Wayanad and Kannur circuit genuinely efficient on a single vehicle. Tell us at quotation stage so the kilometres and the gate timings are planned in.
No on both counts. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal cover should arrange it independently, and on a route through forest country with a ghat descent we recommend it more strongly than on ordinary highway trips. We also do not operate sleeper bus services, which is worth stating plainly on a route this long. The fleet is seated throughout: 8 to 18 seater tempo travellers, 12 to 24 seater minibuses, 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches, 13 to 17 seater Force Urbania, and 4 to 7 seater cars.
October to March for weather, and December to April if Theyyam is the reason for travelling; the two overlap conveniently. June to September is the southwest monsoon, when Malabar takes very heavy rainfall, the ghat sections are at their most demanding, and Theyyam is largely out of season. The beaches are at their best from November onward, and Muzhappilangad in particular depends on tide and sand conditions that are far more reliable outside the monsoon.
