Places to Visit in Wayanad

Chembra Peak
Chembra Peak is the highest point in Wayanad at close to 2,100 metres, and it is the first name that comes up whenever people search for trekking in Wayanad. The trail winds through tea plantations before opening into wide grasslands, and roughly halfway up sits the heart-shaped Chembra Lake, a natural landmark that never dries out even in peak summer. Trekking is permitted only in the morning hours and requires a forest department pass, so travellers usually plan this as the first stop after checking into their resort. The reason this peak features on almost every Wayanad itinerary is the view from the top: on a clear day you can see across the district into neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with layers of the Western Ghats fading into the horizon. Photographers and honeymoon couples in particular ask us to build a full day around this trek, since the drive up to the base and the return can take a good part of the morning.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Wayanad begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Wayanad road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Mysore
Palace City of Karnataka
The first leg of the journey covers around 150 kilometres and typically takes close to three hours, depending on traffic while leaving the city and the number of toll stretches on the Bangalore-Mysore expressway. This stretch is fast and well maintained, so most drivers use it as the first natural break in a long drive, especially if the pickup was early in the morning. Mysore itself is worth pausing in even briefly: the Mysore Palace, with its domes and evening illumination, is one of the most recognised landmarks in South India, and travellers who leave Bangalore before dawn sometimes plan a short breakfast stop here before continuing toward Wayanad. Highlights along this stretch include the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor, glimpses of Srirangapatna's river islands just off the highway, and the approach into Mysore city, which is noticeably greener and quieter than Bangalore's outer ring roads. For travellers doing a Bangalore to Mysore Wayanad combined trip, this first stop often becomes an overnight halt rather than a quick pause, particularly for families travelling with children or elderly members who prefer to break up a long drive into two shorter days.

Gundlupet
Gateway to Bandipur
From Mysore, the route continues through Nanjangud and on to Gundlupet, covering roughly 65 additional kilometres and bringing the total distance from Bangalore to around 215 kilometres. This section of the drive passes directly through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Bandipur National Park, and it is not unusual to see spotted deer or even wild elephants crossing the road, particularly in the early morning or at dusk. Because this is a protected forest corridor, night driving is restricted between 9 PM and 6 AM, which is one reason drivers plan pickup times carefully for a same-day Bangalore to Wayanad cab trip. The road narrows through the reserve and speed limits are strictly enforced, so this stretch takes longer per kilometre than the highway before it. Travellers who enjoy wildlife sightings often rate this as one of the most memorable parts of the entire journey, even before reaching Wayanad's own sanctuaries. Gundlupet, just before the Kerala border, is the last reasonably sized town for fuel, food and restrooms before the vehicle climbs into the ghat sections leading to Wayanad.

Sultan Bathery
Historic Hill Town
The drive from Gundlupet to Sultan Bathery covers around 50 kilometres and marks the entry into Kerala and the Wayanad district through the Muthanga forest checkpoint. This stretch includes a noticeable change in scenery, as dry deciduous forest gradually gives way to the greener, more humid landscape typical of the Western Ghats. Sultan Bathery, the first proper town on the Kerala side, sits close to both the Edakkal Caves and the Muthanga range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is why many itineraries treat it as the point where sightseeing effectively begins rather than the resort itself. Cabs booked through Tejas Travels usually recommend arranging the Muthanga safari or the Edakkal Caves visit on the way in, since backtracking later in the trip adds unnecessary driving time. The town also has the last major fuel stations and ATMs before travellers head deeper into the hill areas around Kalpetta and Vythiri, so most drivers suggest a short stop here regardless of the day's plan

Wayanad Town
Reached your Destination
The final stretch from Sultan Bathery to Kalpetta, the district headquarters, is a short but scenic 20 to 25 kilometres, bringing the total trip distance to roughly 285 to 290 kilometres from Bangalore. The road winds gently through spice plantations, small tea estates and roadside stalls selling local coffee and spices, giving travellers their first real sense of Wayanad's slower pace after the highway driving earlier in the day. Kalpetta serves as a convenient base for most resorts and homestays, with reasonably short drives from here to Chembra Peak, Pookode Lake and Banasura Sagar Dam. Depending on where exactly the accommodation is located, some routes continue slightly further toward Vythiri or Meppadi, adding another 10 to 15 kilometres. By this point, the total travel time from Bangalore typically falls between six and seven hours including short breaks, which is why most travellers treat a Bangalore to Wayanad cab journey as a comfortable single-day drive rather than something that needs to be split across two days, provided the pickup happens reasonably early in the morning.

Minibus Packages from Bangalore to Wayanad
Every quote is built around your group size, night halts and itinerary, but the four structures below cover how most Bangalore groups travel to Wayanad. All packages are billed garage to garage on total kilometres and hours, with the Kerala permit shown as a separate line.
Corporate Package
Wayanad is the most-booked corporate offsite we run outside Coorg, and the resort infrastructure around Vythiri and Kalpetta is built for it. You get an Executive Mini Coach with pushback seating, a Proforma Invoice up front for PO approval, a GST invoice after, and one point of contact throughout. Because the Bandipur gate governs the schedule, we set the outbound departure with your HR or admin team rather than defaulting to a convenient hour. Parties over thirty-two run as coordinated convoys, and established accounts move to thirty-day credit through our corporate travels division.
Family Package
For extended families and joint groups of thirteen to thirty-two travelling over a long weekend. The day is paced with generous halts and a driver who will adjust around children and older travellers, which matters on a six-and-a-half-hour drive with a checkpost in it. Two nights is the configuration we recommend: one night leaves you with a day and a half on the plateau after the drive at each end. Enquire through our mini bus booking online process, and for larger family groups a second vehicle can come from the outstation travel fleet.
Budget Package
For college batches, trekking clubs and cost-sensitive groups. Standard AC or non-AC mini bus, the same route, the same permit handling and the same driver standards, with the saving coming from vehicle tier rather than from cutting corners. Non-AC works perfectly well on the plateau itself, though the Mysore to Gundlupet stretch is warm in April and May. Weekday departures outside the December and summer holiday peaks reduce the rate further, and a full vehicle brings the per-head cost down sharply on an interstate route where fixed charges are shared.
Luxury Package
Premium mini coach with reclining pushback seats, extra legroom, curtains, LED interior lighting, an entertainment system and a chauffeur in formal attire. On a route with nearly seven hours of driving each way, the seating upgrade justifies itself more clearly than on a short trip. Suited to milestone family celebrations, client hosting and destination events at the Vythiri resorts. Groups wanting more can move up to our luxury Volvo bus, or take the Force Urbania for a smaller premium party on narrower estate roads.

Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Wayanad Minibus
Six and a half to seven hours covering roughly 285 kilometres to Kalpetta, including a breakfast halt at Maddur, a main halt at Mysore, a ten-minute stop at Gundlupet and the Muthanga checkpost. Weekend mornings at the border add time. A 5:30 AM departure is the timing we recommend, both to clear Bandipur comfortably and to reach your resort with the afternoon still usable.
The forest stretch on NH766 through Bandipur is closed to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM to protect wildlife movement, with no exemption for tourist coaches. A group leaving Bangalore in the afternoon will not reach Wayanad that night. We build every itinerary backwards from that gate and flag it at quotation stage, so it never becomes a surprise on the road.
Yes, a permit is required, and no, it is not part of the base fare. Wayanad is in Kerala and the route crosses the state line at Muthanga, so an interstate permit applies to every trip on this route without exception. We arrange it in advance and show the cost as its own line on your written quote, so you know the figure before you travel rather than at the checkpost.
Their status has changed more than once since the July 2024 landslides in the Meppadi area, and trekking and eco-tourism sites across the district are also suspended at short notice during red alert warnings. We check the current position with the forest office before finalising any itinerary. Please do not plan a trip around Chembra Peak without confirming with us first, and treat any competitor page listing it as definitely open with caution.
No, and no private vehicle can. Safaris run only in forest department jeeps in two windows, early morning and late afternoon, booked at the forest office. A group of twenty-four needs four to six jeeps, which fill quickly in season, so book ahead rather than turning up. Your coach parks at the entrance and the driver coordinates timings. Jeep charges are paid separately at the forest office and are not part of the vehicle hire.
Two nights is what we recommend. With nearly seven hours of driving at each end, a single night leaves you roughly a day and a half on the plateau, which is not enough given how spread out the district is. Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery and Mananthavady sit twenty-five to thirty-five kilometres apart, so where you stay affects how much you drive each day. Three nights lets you take the northern side of the district properly.
Book one seat category above your headcount so luggage and legroom stay comfortable on a long drive. Eleven or twelve people suit a 13 or 17 seater, fifteen to eighteen a 20 seater, twenty to twenty-four a 26 seater. Above twenty-eight, a 32 seater or full-size bus. Tell us your resort name at enquiry stage, because several estate properties around Vythiri have narrow access roads that a 32 seater cannot use.
The quoted fare includes the base fare with fuel charges and the driver allowance. Charged separately are toll and parking, the Kerala interstate permit, driver bata after 9:45 PM, GST, and any forest department safari charges. Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage. Every line appears on your written quote before you pay any advance.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passengers insurance by the company. Our vehicles carry statutory commercial vehicle insurance and all drivers hold valid commercial licences with route experience. On weather: if the Kerala authorities issue a red alert or restrict access to the district for your dates, we transfer the booking to a new date at no penalty, or refund in full if you prefer. Standard cancellation tiers apply otherwise, with 7 days notice needed for a full refund on multi-day hire.
October to May is the practical window, with December to February the most comfortable and the plateau at its greenest after the rains. March to May is warm at the base of the route but pleasant on the plateau. The June to September monsoon brings very heavy rain, landslide risk and periodic site closures, and we would advise large groups against it. Book three to four weeks ahead for long weekends and holiday peaks.
