Places to Visit in Coonoor
Sims Park

The annual fruit and vegetable show held here in May is a genuine local event rather than a tourist one. Visit in the morning. It is the one attraction actually inside Coonoor rather than outside it, it takes around ninety minutes, and it is a considerably calmer proposition than the Ooty botanical gardens on a long weekend.

Dolphins Nose and Lambs Rock
The two viewpoints that define Coonoor, on the same road east of the town. Dolphins Nose is a rock formation projecting over a deep valley, with Catherine Falls visible across the gorge on a clear day and a drop below that is genuinely vertiginous. Lambs Rock, closer in, looks out over the Coimbatore plains a kilometre and a half below - on a clear morning you can see a very long way. Visit early, because both cloud over by mid-morning through much of the year, and the whole point is the view. The road out passes through tea estate and forest and is pleasant in itself.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The line from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Mountain Railways of India, and the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section is the only rack railway in the country - a steam-hauled climb using a rack and pinion system to manage gradients no adhesion locomotive could take. It is among the great railway journeys in India. Booking is essential and the train sells out well ahead, particularly in season. Many travellers do the Coonoor to Ooty leg as a shorter ride. The Coonoor station itself is worth ten minutes even without a ticket.
The Tea Estates and Factories
Coonoor is the centre of the Nilgiri tea trade, and the estates run right up to the edge of the town. Several factories run visitor tours covering withering, rolling, oxidation and drying, finishing with a tasting - Highfield is the best known but there are others, and the smaller ones are often the more interesting. The Tea Museum at Dolphins Nose road covers the history of the industry in the hills. Visit a factory when it is actually processing, which is generally in the second half of the day. This is the single most characteristic thing to do in Coonoor and the one that explains the town.
Catherine Falls and Laws Falls
Catherine Falls, near Kotagiri around twenty kilometres out, is a two-tiered drop of roughly 250 feet and among the highest in the Nilgiris, viewed from a point reached by a rough track off the main road. Laws Falls, closer to Coonoor on the Mettupalayam road, is smaller and easier - a drop of around thirty metres in a wooded setting beside the ghat road. Visit either between July and December when there is genuine water; both reduce considerably by March. The approach to Catherine Falls is rough enough that a higher vehicle is more comfortable, and we will say so if it is on your list.
Droog Fort and Wellington
Droog, around fifteen kilometres from Coonoor, is a ruined hill fort at about 6,000 feet that was held by Tipu Sultan - reached by a trek of a few kilometres from the road end through tea and shola forest, with a view that on a clear day takes in a very large part of the Nilgiris. It is a proper walk rather than a viewpoint. Wellington, between Coonoor and Ooty, is a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with a distinctly ordered colonial character. Visit Droog if your group walks; Wellington is worth driving through in any case on the way to Ooty.

The first three hours are the fastest of the day, on six-lane expressway. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills; Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the most requested addition on family bookings; Maddur and its vada; Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created; and Srirangapatna on its island. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and it is the last major city before the forest - the choice of food thins considerably beyond it.
Gundlupet
Flower Town of Karnataka
South of Mysore the road narrows from expressway to good two-lane highway. Nanjangud, twenty-five kilometres out on the Kapila river, holds the very large Srikanteshwara temple and is called the Kashi of the South for the parallel with Varanasi - a forty-five minute stop for travellers with an interest. Gundlupet is the last Karnataka town of any size and genuinely worth slowing for. The fields around it are given over to marigold and sunflower cultivation, and in season the roadside turns solid gold and orange for kilometres. Practically it is the last proper fuel and food stop before Bandipur and the Tamil Nadu border, and our drivers treat it as the checkpoint where the day either is or is not on schedule for the gate.
Theppakadu
Mudumalai Gateway
The highway enters Bandipur National Park and runs nearly twenty kilometres through protected forest, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Speed limits are enforced, stopping is not permitted, and elephant, gaur and spotted deer are seen from the road regularly - the sightings are often better than people expect. This stretch closes to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM. The Tamil Nadu border comes shortly after and the road enters Mudumalai. At Theppakadu, where the elephant camp sits on the Moyar river, the two ghat routes diverge - left for Masinagudi and the Kalhatti bends, straight on for Gudalur and Pykara. Ooty
Gentle Road to the Nilgiris
The Gudalur ascent is the longer of the two climbs and the one buses take - a sustained but manageable gradient through forest that gives way to tea as the altitude increases. The temperature drops steadily and the vegetation changes visibly over the space of half an hour, from sal and teak to eucalyptus, wattle and finally the terraced tea that defines the plateau. Near the top the road passes Pykara, where the falls and the lake sit a short distance off the highway - the lake has boating and the falls are at their best from July through December. It is a worthwhile twenty-minute stop and it is on the road rather than off it. Beyond Pykara the plateau opens out and Ooty follows, busy and built-up in a way that surprises first-time visitors expecting a quiet hill station.
Coonoor
Tea Town of the Nilgiris
The last twenty kilometres run southeast and downhill from Ooty, dropping around four hundred metres, with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway running alongside the road for much of the way - if the timing is right you will pass the train, which most passengers find is the highlight of the drive. Wellington comes first, a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with the ordered character that cantonments have everywhere. Coonoor follows, lower and warmer than Ooty and noticeably less crowded, laid out on slopes with tea estates running right to the edge of the town. Note that many estate bungalows and homestays around Coonoor sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes, so send us the property name at booking and we will confirm what can reach the door. Around 330 kilometres by the Gudalur route, which is the road a minibus must take, and 7 hours 30 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes with halts and forest checkposts. The shorter figure of roughly 290 kilometres that appears on most fare sites is the Kalhatty ghat route through Masinagudi, which is closed to buses and heavy vehicles.
The Kalhatty or Sigur ghat is the steepest motorable road in South India, thirteen kilometres of continuous climb through 36 hairpin bends with gradients over ten percent and a turning radius too tight for a large vehicle. Buses and heavy vehicles are banned, and access rules for tourist vehicles there have been tightened further in recent years. Every bus and minibus uses the Gudalur road instead.
NH-766 through Bandipur and Mudumalai is closed to all traffic between 9 pm and 6 am to protect wildlife crossings, and forest gates on smaller roads close earlier. A vehicle that arrives after the gate closes waits until morning. We plan departures so the group clears the reserve well before dusk in both directions, which is why we ask for an early start.
A Tamil Nadu interstate permit is required for the commercial vehicle and we arrange it as part of the booking. Separately, a Nilgiris district e-pass has been required for vehicles entering during peak season in recent years. Rules and dates change, so we confirm the current requirement before every trip rather than assuming, and we tell you if anything is needed from your side.
Trip starts from around Rs 19,160. The Tamil Nadu permit, e-pass where applicable, toll, parking, driver night halts and GST are billed separately and itemised in the quote. The final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours, so adding Ooty or Kotagiri days adjusts the figure.
Coonoor for most groups. It is quieter, cheaper, surrounded by working tea estates and about forty minutes below Ooty, which you can still cover as a half day. Ooty has more hotel choice and more to do in the evenings but is considerably busier in season. Tell us where you are booked either way, so the driver can check vehicle access before the day.
Yes, and it is the best hour of the trip for most groups. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line and the Coonoor to Ooty section runs about an hour through tea gardens. Seats are limited and sell out well in advance in season, so book early. The minibus can drop the group at one station and meet them at the other, which we plan into the day.
Yes, with one exception. Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose and the tea factories are all reached with short walks from the vehicle and suit any age. Droog Fort involves a three-kilometre walk uphill and should be skipped. The main consideration is the eight-hour drive each way, which is why we recommend three days rather than two.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance as part of the booking. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but personal travel insurance for passengers needs to be arranged independently. Groups travelling under a corporate or school policy should confirm their own coverage before departure.
We do not operate sleeper buses. For overnight and multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts and planned driver night halts, and arrange hotel accommodation along the route where the itinerary calls for it. On this route the night traffic ban through Bandipur rules out an overnight drive in any case.
