Places to Visit in Kollegal

Shivanasamudra - Gaganachukki and Bharachukki

Shivanasamudra - Gaganachukki and Bharachukki

The Cauvery divides around the island of Shivanasamudra and drops in two separate falls. Gaganachukki, on the Mandya side, is the taller and is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge - a segmented cascade dropping into a deep ravine. Bharachukki, on the Chamarajanagar side, is broader, and steps lead down toward the base with coracle rides operating when water levels allow. They are around fifteen kilometres apart by road and both are worth seeing. Visit between August and January when the flow is strong; by March it thins considerably. Access and coracle operation depend on water levels and are periodically restricted for safety, so confirm close to your travel date.

The Shivanasamudra Power Station

The Shivanasamudra Power Station

A detail almost every visitor misses. The hydroelectric station at Shivanasamudra, commissioned in 1902, was the first of its kind in Asia, built to send power over a hundred kilometres to the Kolar Gold Fields - which made KGF one of the first places in the world to receive long-distance transmitted hydroelectric power, and Bangalore among the first Indian cities to be electrified. The station is still operational and completed a century of service in 2006. It is not a visitor attraction in the conventional sense and access is restricted, but understanding what it is changes how you look at the gorge, and it is genuinely one of the more significant pieces of industrial heritage in India.

Male Mahadeshwara Hills

Male Mahadeshwara Hills

MM Hills lies about seventy-five kilometres south-east of Kollegal, and the approach is the memorable part - seventy-seven hairpin bends climbing through the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. The temple is dedicated to Male Mahadeshwara, a saint venerated as an incarnation of Shiva, and the oral epic sung in his honour is a major tradition in Kannada folk literature. It draws very large crowds during festivals. Visit early in the day. The road is narrow, the forest stretch has wildlife including elephants, and it is not a place to be driving after dark. An SUV is more comfortable than a sedan on this approach.

Bheemeshwari and the Cauvery Sanctuary

Bheemeshwari and the Cauvery Sanctuary

North of Kollegal along the Cauvery, the sanctuary holds a chain of riverside camps at Bheemeshwari, Galibore and Muthathi, best known for angling - the mahseer fishing here was internationally renowned, and is now strictly catch-and-release under conservation rules. Coracle rides, zip lines, river rafting and guided nature walks operate through Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Visit for a genuinely restful two days by the river, or as a day trip from Bangalore in its own right. These camps are reached off the Kanakapura road rather than from Kollegal town, which is worth knowing when planning the routing.

Talakadu and the Buried Temples

Talakadu and the Buried Temples

About forty kilometres west on the Cauvery, Talakadu is one of the strangest sites in Karnataka - a medieval town swallowed by shifting sand dunes, with temples buried under them for centuries and several since excavated. The Panchalinga Darshana, when five Shiva temples are visited together, is held here at intervals of around twelve years and draws enormous crowds. Visit for the sheer oddness of walking across sand dunes to reach Hoysala and Ganga-period stone temples set below ground level. Somanathapura, the third of the UNESCO-inscribed Hoysala temples, lies a further twenty-odd kilometres and pairs naturally with it.

The Kollegal Silk Looms

The Kollegal Silk Looms

The town has been a silk reeling, twisting and handloom weaving centre for generations, producing soft silk sarees on pit looms, historically supplying the Mysore royal household and once known particularly for its navilu or peacock border sarees. The Devanga and Padmasali communities are the traditional weavers, and most of the looms sit inside the town itself rather than in industrial units outside it. Visit if you have any interest in textiles - watching a jacquard pit loom working is a genuinely absorbing half hour, and buying directly from a weaver is both cheaper and more interesting than a showroom. Ask us to arrange it at booking, since it is not a signposted tourist activity.

Dhondenling Tibetan Settlement, Gundal Dam and Maradi Gudda

Dhondenling Tibetan Settlement, Gundal Dam and Maradi Gudda

Three local features almost no visitor knows about. Dhondenling, established in 1974 on around three thousand acres near Kollegal, is one of the Tibetan settlements founded in Karnataka after 1959, with monastery buildings, prayer flags and a resident community - an unexpected thing to find in the Cauvery basin and worth an hour. Gundal Dam, around fifteen kilometres out, is a quiet reservoir with hill views and almost no crowds. Maradi Gudda is the small hill overlooking the town that gives the standard view across Kollegal. None of these will fill a day, but together they make the town itself worth more than a fuel stop.

Minibus Packages from Bangalore to Kollegal

Four package shapes cover almost every enquiry we take for this route. All are quoted garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours.

Corporate Package

Built for offsites, river-camp bookings and team outings. A 20 to 24 seater minibus with pushback seating, a GST-compliant invoice, a Proforma Invoice issued in advance for purchase-order approval, and 30-day credit terms for registered corporate accounts. Pickup can be arranged from several tech park points across Electronic City, Whitefield, Manyata and Bellandur on one trip sheet, which suits the Kanakapura Road exit well. Where a team exceeds twenty-four people we pair a minibus with a tempo traveller so both vehicles travel in convoy under one coordinator. Regular clients route these through our corporate travel desk.

Family and Pilgrimage Package

The most requested option on this route, particularly for MM Hills darshan and monsoon trips to the falls. A 12 to 18 seater minibus with a driver who has driven the Hanur ghat section before, an early departure so the group is ahead of the Kanakapura Road traffic, and a schedule built around forest gate timings rather than fighting them. For groups with elderly members we recommend the upper viewing area at Bharachukki instead of the long stair descent, and the two-day version with an overnight in Kollegal.

Budget Group Package

For college groups, friend circles and cost-conscious family trips. A 12 to 20 seater non-AC or standard AC minibus at the lowest per-kilometre rate in our range, on a straightforward same-day return with no frills. Split across sixteen or eighteen people this typically works out cheaper per head than bus tickets plus local jeeps at each stop, which on a route with this many scattered attractions adds up quickly. This is where most mini bus rental in bangalore price enquiries land, and we quote it in writing with the kilometre rate stated openly.

Luxury Package

For groups that want coach comfort in a vehicle that can still handle a two-lane approach road. Executive minibus with reclining seats, better suspension for the Hanur climb, curtains and a music system, or an upgrade to a Force Urbania for 13 to 17 passengers who want the highest comfort tier in this size class. Suited to senior management groups, visiting delegations and family occasions where the vehicle is part of the impression.

Our Fleet at Tejas Tours and Travels

•      Buses: 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches for large group and corporate movements.

Our Services from Bangalore and Mysore

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kollegal Minibus

The distance is about 145 kilometres one way via Kanakapura Road and NH-948, through Harohalli, Kanakapura, Halaguru and Malavalli. A minibus takes 3 to 3 hours 30 minutes including one halt. The route avoids Mysore city entirely, which is why it is often faster than the distance suggests. Leaving Bangalore by 6:00 am puts your group in Kollegal before 9:45 am.

July to October, after the monsoon has filled the Kaveri. That is when both falls are at full volume and the trip is worth taking for the falls alone. From January onwards the flow drops steadily and by March it can be thin. The rest of the itinerary, meaning Talakadu, Somanathapura, the river camps and MM Hills, is at its best between October and March.

Our minibus fleet runs from 12 to 24 seats. Book one size above your headcount so nobody travels with a bag on their lap. Under seven passengers a car is the more economical choice, and for 8 to 18 a tempo traveller is worth comparing. Above 24 we pair vehicles rather than sending a full-size coach, because the approach roads to the falls and MM Hills suit smaller vehicles better.

12 seater starts from around Rs 10,200. A two-day itinerary adding MM Hills or Talakadu is quoted separately and includes a driver night halt. The final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours, and toll, parking, interstate tax and GST are billed separately. You get a written quote itemizing every one of these before you pay anything.

It is possible but tight. MM Hills is about 80 kilometres south of Kollegal through Hanur on a ghat road, and forest gate timings on the sanctuary stretch are enforced. Doing both from Bangalore in a single day means roughly fourteen hours on the road. We recommend the two-day version with an overnight in Kollegal: falls and silk town on day one, MM Hills on day two.

No. Entry tickets at the falls, coracle charges, forest entry fees at the Cauvery and Male Mahadeshwara sanctuaries, and camp charges at Bheemeshwari or Muthathi are payable on site and are not part of the vehicle rental. Our driver will point you to the right counter and advise on timings, but the payment is yours to make.

The descent is a long flight of steps and the climb back up is harder than most people expect, particularly in humid weather. Anyone with knee or heart trouble is better off staying at the upper viewing area, which has a good view of the fall anyway. Footwear grips poorly on wet rock near the base, and access is closed by the authorities during very high flow, so follow the on-site instructions.

Yes. Base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance are all included in the quoted rate. Not included are toll and parking, interstate tax, GST, and additional driver bata if the trip runs past 9:45 pm. On a two-day itinerary a driver night halt charge applies and is stated in the quote. All of it is written down before you commit.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance as part of the booking. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but personal travel insurance for passengers needs to be arranged independently. Groups travelling under a corporate or school policy should confirm their own coverage before departure, which matters on an itinerary involving water and forest areas.

We do not operate sleeper buses. For overnight and multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts, and arrange hotel accommodation along the route where the itinerary calls for it. For the Kollegal circuit, an overnight in Kollegal town or at one of the Cauvery river camps is the usual arrangement.
