Places to Visit in Kannur

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach
Around fifteen kilometres south of the city, this is the longest drive-in beach in Asia - roughly four kilometres of firm black sand on which vehicles are permitted to drive, with a natural rock barrier that keeps the water calm enough for swimming along much of it. It has appeared on international lists of the best beaches to drive on. Visit in the late afternoon into sunset, which is when it is at its best and busiest. Driving conditions depend entirely on the tide and the sand, and stretches can be soft, so follow local direction on where to enter and do not take a vehicle onto the sand without checking.
Payyambalam Beach and Ezhimala
Payyambalam is the main city beach, a long clean stretch with a landscaped garden and a large sculpture of a mother and child by the artist Kanayi Kunhiraman, and it is where Kannur goes in the evening. Ezhimala, around fifty-five kilometres north, is a cluster of hills rising straight out of the sea with a beach at their foot - it holds the Indian Naval Academy, so access to parts is restricted, but the setting is extraordinary and there are medicinal herbs on the slopes with a long local reputation. Visit Payyambalam for an easy evening and Ezhimala as a half-day drive up a genuinely beautiful stretch of coast.
Parassinikkadavu and Theyyam
The Parassinikkadavu Muthappan Temple on the Valapattanam river is unusual in that Theyyam is performed here daily rather than seasonally, which makes it the one reliable place to see the art form outside the main season. Theyyam itself is a ritual performance in which the costumed performer, drawn largely from specific communities, is understood to become the deity and is addressed as such - elaborate headdresses, face painting, fire and drumming, staged at village shrines usually through the night. Thalassery - Circus, Cricket and Biryani
Twenty kilometres south, Thalassery is a town with an improbable number of firsts. The Indian circus tradition began here, when Keeleri Kunhikannan started training performers in the late nineteenth century, and the town supplied circus artists across the country for generations. Cricket is said to have been first played in India here by British traders. And Thalassery biryani - short-grain kaima rice, distinct spicing, cooked separately and layered - is the most celebrated of Kerala biryanis. There is also Thalassery Fort from 1708 and Overbury Folly, a hilltop viewpoint. Visit for the food alone if nothing else; a meal here is a legitimate reason to break the journey.
The Kannur Handlooms
Kannur is one of the major handloom centres of India, with weaving cooperatives around Kanhirode and elsewhere in the district producing furnishing fabric, bed linen and shirting supplied nationally and exported. The looms are worked in cooperative sheds rather than tourist showrooms, and visiting one is a genuinely interesting hour - the scale of a working handloom shed with dozens of looms running at once is not what most visitors expect. The first three hours are the easiest of the day, on six-lane expressway that has transformed this stretch. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be on the expressway before 6:15 AM, because on this route everything downstream depends on reaching the Nagarhole gate in good time. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills, still the largest silk cocoon market in Asia. Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the single most requested addition on family bookings. Maddur and its vada. Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and on this route it is also the last major city - after Hunsur the facilities thin out sharply, so it is the sensible place to eat properly rather than snack.
Hunsur
Timber and Tobacco Town of Mysore District
Forty-five kilometres north-west of Mysore on good two-lane road through farmland. Hunsur is a working market town built around timber, tobacco and the surrounding agricultural belt, and it also holds one of the larger Tibetan settlements in Karnataka at Bylakuppe nearby, though that lies off this particular line toward Kushalnagar. For this journey Hunsur matters as the decision point and the last reliable service stop before the forest. From here the road turns south-west toward the Nagarhole gate, and beyond that there is essentially nothing until Kutta - no fuel worth relying on, limited food, and patchy mobile coverage through the forest stretch. Nagarhole
Rajiv Gandhi National Park
The road enters Nagarhole and runs roughly thirty kilometres through protected forest, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and one of the finest wildlife habitats in the country. Elephant, gaur, spotted deer and langur are commonly seen from the road, and tiger and leopard are present though rarely visible. Speed breakers are frequent and speed limits are enforced. Two rules matter here. Traffic through the Nagarhole stretch is not permitted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, and two-wheelers are barred from this forest road entirely. There is no discretion at the gate. Road surface through and immediately after this section has historically been variable and is worth checking rather than assuming. Kutta, just past the exit gate, is the last Karnataka settlement and the only place between Hunsur and Mananthavady with water, food and toilets, so it is the natural short break even though most travellers would rather press on.
Mananthavady
Northern Capital of Wayanad
The Kerala border comes shortly after Kutta and the change is immediate - wider road, more traffic, and the dense evergreen character of the Wayanad plateau. Tholpetty, the northern range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, is the first attraction on this side and safari jeeps cluster along the roadside here. Kattikulam follows, with the turn for Kuruva Island a few kilometres off the highway - a cluster of uninhabited river islands on the Kabini, reached by raft, and worth a half day if the itinerary allows. Mananthavady is the northern capital of Wayanad and the point where all the routes from Karnataka converge before the descent. It holds the tomb of Pazhassi Raja, the Kottayam ruler who led a guerrilla campaign against the East India Company across these forests for more than a decade before his death in 1805 - a significant figure in Kerala history and commemorated with a memorial and museum. It is also the last town of any size before the ghat, and a sensible place to stop.
Thalassery
Birthplace of the Indian Circus.
The Periya ghat carries the road off the Wayanad plateau down into Kannur district through forest, in a sequence of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is a gentler descent than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and generally less congested, but it is still a ghat and our drivers take it at a measured pace, in daylight wherever the schedule allows. The temperature climbs noticeably on the way down and the vegetation shifts from plateau forest to coastal Malabar within twenty minutes. At the bottom the road runs through Iritty and Koothuparamba toward the coast. Thalassery, when you reach it, deserves more than a pass-through: this small town gave India its circus tradition, hosted some of the earliest cricket played in the country, and produced the biryani that is the benchmark for the whole state. Thalassery Fort dates from 1708 and Overbury Folly gives a view over the town and sea. If you time the day to eat lunch here rather than in Kannur, you will have made the right decision.
Kannur
Land of Looms and Lore
The last twenty kilometres run north along the coast, passing Muzhappilangad and Dharmadam Island on the way, with the sea intermittently visible to the west. This is a densely settled coastal strip rather than open road, and progress is steady rather than fast. Kannur was the seat of the Kolathiri rajas and later the Arakkal dynasty, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, and it was fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British in turn because of the pepper trade that came down from the hills behind it. On a long interstate itinerary this is worth arranging, particularly for groups with elderly travellers.
We do not operate sleeper buses, which is worth knowing on this route because overnight sleeper coaches are a common way of covering the distance. For our multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts and arrange hotel accommodation along the route. For Kannur that usually means a night in Kannur town, or a night in Coorg on the way if you prefer to split the drive.
