Places to Visit in Kannur

St Angelo Fort and the Arakkal Museum
St Angelo Fort was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese viceroy, then held by the Dutch, sold to the Arakkal family, and finally taken by the British - a laterite triangle on a headland with a moat, bastions and a view over the Mappila Bay fishing harbour that is among the best in the city. Nearby, the Arakkal Museum occupies part of the palace of the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal dynasty in Kerala, whose rulers held Kannur and the Lakshadweep islands. Visit both together in a morning. They tell the story of a coastline that was fought over by four European powers because of what grew inland.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Mysore
City of Palaces
The first three hours are the easiest of the day, on six-lane expressway that has transformed this stretch. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be on the expressway before 6:15 AM, because on this route everything downstream depends on reaching the Nagarhole gate in good time. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills, still the largest silk cocoon market in Asia. Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the single most requested addition on family bookings. Maddur and its vada. Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and on this route it is also the last major city - after Hunsur the facilities thin out sharply, so it is the sensible place to eat properly rather than snack.

Hunsur
Timber and Tobacco Town of Mysore District
Forty-five kilometres north-west of Mysore on good two-lane road through farmland. Hunsur is a working market town built around timber, tobacco and the surrounding agricultural belt, and it also holds one of the larger Tibetan settlements in Karnataka at Bylakuppe nearby, though that lies off this particular line toward Kushalnagar. For this journey Hunsur matters as the decision point and the last reliable service stop before the forest. From here the road turns south-west toward the Nagarhole gate, and beyond that there is essentially nothing until Kutta - no fuel worth relying on, limited food, and patchy mobile coverage through the forest stretch. Our drivers fill up here as standing practice regardless of what the gauge says, and this is also where they confirm the schedule against the 6:00 PM gate closure.

Nagarhole
Rajiv Gandhi National Park
The road enters Nagarhole and runs roughly thirty kilometres through protected forest, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and one of the finest wildlife habitats in the country. Elephant, gaur, spotted deer and langur are commonly seen from the road, and tiger and leopard are present though rarely visible. Speed breakers are frequent and speed limits are enforced. Two rules matter here. Traffic through the Nagarhole stretch is not permitted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, and two-wheelers are barred from this forest road entirely. There is no discretion at the gate. Road surface through and immediately after this section has historically been variable and is worth checking rather than assuming. Kutta, just past the exit gate, is the last Karnataka settlement and the only place between Hunsur and Mananthavady with water, food and toilets, so it is the natural short break even though most travellers would rather press on.

Mananthavady
Northern Capital of Wayanad
The Kerala border comes shortly after Kutta and the change is immediate - wider road, more traffic, and the dense evergreen character of the Wayanad plateau. Tholpetty, the northern range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, is the first attraction on this side and safari jeeps cluster along the roadside here. Kattikulam follows, with the turn for Kuruva Island a few kilometres off the highway - a cluster of uninhabited river islands on the Kabini, reached by raft, and worth a half day if the itinerary allows. Mananthavady is the northern capital of Wayanad and the point where all the routes from Karnataka converge before the descent. It holds the tomb of Pazhassi Raja, the Kottayam ruler who led a guerrilla campaign against the East India Company across these forests for more than a decade before his death in 1805 - a significant figure in Kerala history and commemorated with a memorial and museum. It is also the last town of any size before the ghat, and a sensible place to stop.

Thalassery
Birthplace of the Indian Circus.
The Periya ghat carries the road off the Wayanad plateau down into Kannur district through forest, in a sequence of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is a gentler descent than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and generally less congested, but it is still a ghat and our drivers take it at a measured pace, in daylight wherever the schedule allows. The temperature climbs noticeably on the way down and the vegetation shifts from plateau forest to coastal Malabar within twenty minutes. At the bottom the road runs through Iritty and Koothuparamba toward the coast. Thalassery, when you reach it, deserves more than a pass-through: this small town gave India its circus tradition, hosted some of the earliest cricket played in the country, and produced the biryani that is the benchmark for the whole state. Thalassery Fort dates from 1708 and Overbury Folly gives a view over the town and sea. If you time the day to eat lunch here rather than in Kannur, you will have made the right decision.

Kannur
Land of Looms and Lore
The last twenty kilometres run north along the coast, passing Muzhappilangad and Dharmadam Island on the way, with the sea intermittently visible to the west. This is a densely settled coastal strip rather than open road, and progress is steady rather than fast. Kannur was the seat of the Kolathiri rajas and later the Arakkal dynasty, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, and it was fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British in turn because of the pepper trade that came down from the hills behind it. Today it is a working coastal city known for its handlooms, its beaches and above all for Theyyam. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. For Kannur International Airport at Mattannur, note it sits inland roughly thirty kilometres east of the city, back toward the direction you came from, so airport drops are quicker than the city map suggests.

Minibus Packages from Bangalore to Kannur
Four package shapes cover almost every enquiry we take for this route. All are quoted garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, with the Kerala permit itemised separately.
Corporate Package
Built for offsites, client visits and team travel to the Malabar coast. A 20 to 24 seater minibus with pushback seating for the long haul, a GST-compliant invoice, a Proforma Invoice issued in advance for purchase-order approval, and 30-day credit terms for registered corporate accounts. Pickup can be arranged from several tech park points across Electronic City, Whitefield, Manyata and Bellandur on one trip sheet. Where a team exceeds twenty-four people we pair a minibus with a tempo traveller so both vehicles travel in convoy under one coordinator. Regular clients route these through our corporate travel desk.
Family and Wedding Package
A large share of our Kannur bookings are families travelling for Malabar weddings, and those trips have their own shape: heavy luggage, a wide age range, fixed arrival times and often a multi-stop route around the district afterwards. A 12 to 18 seater minibus with generous luggage space, a driver who knows the forest-road timings, and a schedule that gets the group in with time to rest before the function. We plan the outbound leg to clear the border and the forest section in daylight, which usually means a departure before 5:00 am.
Budget Group Package
For college groups, friend circles and cost-conscious family trips. A 12 to 20 seater non-AC or standard AC minibus at the lowest per-kilometre rate in our range, on a straightforward three-day itinerary. On a route this long the per-head economics are strongly in favour of a group vehicle: split across eighteen people, the total including permit and driver halts usually lands below what the same group would spend on separate transport and local taxis in Kannur. This is where most mini bus rental in bangalore price enquiries land, and we quote it with the kilometre rate stated openly.
Luxury Package
For groups that want to arrive after eight hours on the road without feeling it. Executive minibus with reclining seats, better suspension for the Makutta descent, curtains and a music system, or an upgrade to a Force Urbania for 13 to 17 passengers who want the highest comfort tier in this size class. On a route of this length the comfort upgrade is worth more than it is on a short day trip, and it is the one we most often recommend for older travellers.
Our Fleet at Tejas Tours and Travels
We operate and maintain the following vehicle categories, all available for the Kannur route and every other outstation destination from Bangalore.
• Buses: 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches for large group and corporate movements.
• Minibus: 12 to 24 seater, the recommended size class for this route.
• Tempo Traveller: 8 to 18 seater for mid-size groups.
• Force Urbania: 13 to 17 seater luxury van.
• Cars: 4 to 7 seater, including Etios, Dzire, Innova, Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Commuter, Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes E-Class, Mercedes S-Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost.
Please note that we do not operate a sleeper bus service. This matters on the Kannur route in particular, because overnight sleeper coaches are a common way of covering the distance. For our overnight and multi-day group travel we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts, and arrange hotel accommodation along the route where the itinerary requires it.
Our Services from Bangalore and Mysore
Every service below operates from both Bangalore and Mysore, with the same fleet standards, the same written-quote process and the same garage-to-garage billing. Mysore is worth noting on this route in particular, since it sits at the 145-kilometre mark and many Kannur groups start or finish there.

What Our Customers Say About Our Minibus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kannur Minibus
About 310 to 320 kilometres by road, and 7 to 8 hours with halts. The usual route runs through Mysore, Hunsur, Gonikoppal and the Makutta forest to Iritty and Mattannur. It is longer in monsoon. This is a full travelling day in each direction, which is why we quote Kannur as a three-day trip rather than a weekend run.
Not comfortably. Two days means sixteen hours of driving with a few hours in Kannur between them, and the return leg finishing late at night. Three days and two nights is the practical minimum: travel day, full day in Kannur, travel day. Four days lets you add Thalassery, Pythal Mala or a night in Coorg on the way.
Yes. A commercial vehicle crossing from Karnataka into Kerala requires a valid interstate permit with the associated tax paid. We arrange this as part of the booking and itemise it separately in the written quote, so you see the amount before you confirm. It is not included in the base fare, along with toll, parking and GST.
Our minibus fleet runs from 12 to 24 seats. On a route this long, book one size above your headcount so passengers have room and luggage is not on laps for eight hours. Under seven a car is more economical, and for 8 to 18 a tempo traveller is worth comparing. Above 24 we pair vehicles rather than sending a full-size coach, which handles the Makutta descent poorly.
price starts from Rs 22,360. Kerala permit, toll, parking, driver night halt and GST are billed separately and itemised in the quote. The final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours, so a longer itinerary around the district adjusts the figure accordingly.
Yes. The Makutta forest road on the Karnataka-Kerala border has night movement restrictions, as do the alternative routes through Bandipur and Muthanga. Timings and closures change with forest department decisions and season, so we confirm the current position before each trip and plan departures so the vehicle clears the forest well before dusk.
No. Muzhappilangad is the longest drive-in beach in India, but the sand takes cars and two-wheelers, not a loaded minibus. Our driver parks at the access point and your group walks on or hires a smaller vehicle at the beach. The drivable stretch also changes with the tide, so check timings locally on the day.
The main Theyyam season runs roughly from October to May across the shrines and sacred groves of north Malabar, with schedules announced locally rather than centrally. If your dates fall outside that, the Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple holds rituals every day of the year, morning and evening, and welcomes visitors of all faiths. Tell us at booking and we will allocate a driver with local contacts.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance as part of the booking. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but personal travel insurance for passengers needs to be arranged independently. On a long interstate itinerary this is worth arranging, particularly for groups with elderly travellers.
We do not operate sleeper buses, which is worth knowing on this route because overnight sleeper coaches are a common way of covering the distance. For our multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts and arrange hotel accommodation along the route. For Kannur that usually means a night in Kannur town, or a night in Coorg on the way if you prefer to split the drive.
