Places to Visit in Yercaud
Yercaud Lake and Anna Park
The lake at the centre of town is the reason Yercaud is called what it is - yeri and kaadu, lake and forest - and it is the hub around which everything else sits. Pedal and rowing boats operate on it, the surrounding walkway is where the town gathers in the evening, and Anna Park beside it is a small landscaped garden with a Japanese-style section and a greenhouse. Visit in the late afternoon. It is not a spectacular lake by hill-station standards and visitors who arrive expecting Ooty are sometimes underwhelmed, but as the centre of a small quiet town it works exactly as it should, and everything in Yercaud is measured in distance from it.

Lady Seat, Gent Seat and Children Seat
A cluster of viewpoints on the western edge of the plateau, looking down over the ghat road and out across the plains to Salem. Lady Seat takes its name from an Englishwoman who reportedly came here every evening during the colonial period, and there is a small observatory with a telescope alongside. Visit at sunset, and if you can, stay past dark - the lights of Salem coming on across the plain below is the sight people remember from Yercaud, and it is genuinely striking. The three seats are within a few minutes of each other and the whole stop takes under an hour.
Pagoda Point
On the eastern side of the plateau, Pagoda Point takes its name from stone cairns stacked in pagoda form by earlier visitors, with a Rama temple now on the site. It looks out over a different valley from the Lady Seat viewpoints - deeper, greener and with the Servarayan range behind. Visit at sunrise if you can manage it, since this side catches the early light and the valley mist below is at its best in the first hour. It is around five kilometres from the lake on good road, and it is the counterpart to Lady Seat rather than a repeat of it.
Servarayan Temple
At around 5,325 feet, the Servarayan temple marks the highest point in the Shevaroy Hills and gives the range its name. The shrine itself is a small cave temple dedicated to Servarayan and Kaveri, reached by a short walk from the parking area, and it is a low-key place rather than a grand one. The reason to go is the view, which on a clear morning takes in the whole plateau and a long way beyond. Visit early, before the cloud builds. The approach road passes through coffee estate country and is one of the more attractive short drives in the district.
Kiliyur Falls
The waterfall drops around ninety metres into the valley below the plateau, fed by the overflow from Yercaud Lake, and it is reached by a path and a flight of steps down from the road - a walk of twenty to thirty minutes each way that is steeper coming back than going down. Visit between July and December when there is genuine water; outside that window it reduces considerably and the walk is not worth it. Footwear matters here, the steps get slippery after rain, and the path is not suitable for anyone unsteady. It is the one attraction in Yercaud that asks something of you.
The Loop Road and the Coffee Estates
Yercaud has been coffee country since the British planted it in the nineteenth century, and the plateau is covered in coffee under silver oak shade alongside orange, pepper, jackfruit and banana. The thirty-kilometre Loop Road circles the plateau through this country and through small settlements and forest, and it is the best thing to do in Yercaud that is not a viewpoint. Several estates offer plantation walks and stays. Visit in April if you can, when the coffee flowers and the whole plateau smells of it. Bear Cave, Rose Garden and Montfort School - a well-known boarding school in an old colonial building - all sit along or near the loop.

Little England of India
The only part of the day that depends on timing rather than road. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Electronic City before 7:15 AM, because the difference between clearing Silk Board before and after the commuter build-up is close to an hour. Passengers boarding at Whitefield or Marathahalli are routed via Sarjapur and Attibele to bypass Chandapura. The road opens out immediately after the Attibele toll and the Tamil Nadu border. Hosur is called the Little England of India for its unusually temperate climate, and it sits at the centre of a rose-growing belt that supplies flowers across South India alongside major two-wheeler and automotive plants. Most travellers do not halt here. From Hosur the NH 44 is six-lane and excellent, and on a route this short the whole rest of the drive is straightforward.
Krishnagiri
Mango Capital of Tamil Nadu
Fifty fast kilometres of six-lane divided highway with hill views on both sides. This is where the drive settles, and for a 7:00 AM departure Krishnagiri arrives around 8:45 AM - close to the right time for breakfast. Krishnagiri is the mango belt of Tamil Nadu, and between April and July the roadside Banganapalli and Neelam stalls are worth stopping for on their own. A ninth-century hill fort built on a granite outcrop is visible from the highway, and the KRP Dam catchment nearby makes a quiet break point. This is also where Chennai-bound traffic peels off at Rayakottai and the road south thins noticeably. There is a good cluster of highway restaurants around the bypass, and on a short route like this one there is no reason to rush past them.
Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
Dharmapuri is an agricultural district centre known regionally for mango and tamarind. The significant draw nearby is Hogenakkal, forty-five kilometres east, where the Cauvery drops through a gorge and coracle rides run below the falls. On a Yercaud trip this is a genuinely practical addition rather than a stretch - many of our bookings on this corridor do Yercaud and Hogenakkal across two days, and the geography works. Thoppur is the one demanding section on the highway. The road climbs steeply between Dharmapuri and Salem, and although four-laned throughout, the gradient is severe enough that loaded trucks slow to walking pace, lane discipline suffers and a proportion of drivers treat it as a racetrack. Our drivers hold back rather than joining in. Beyond it the road opens out into Salem, built on iron ore and mango orchards, and the Shevaroy Hills become visible ahead - a green wall rising off the plain, which is where you are going.
Shevaroy Hills
Twenty Hairpin Range
Thirty-odd kilometres and twenty numbered hairpin bends climbing from the plains to the plateau, taking around an hour. The bends are each marked with their number, which makes the climb oddly satisfying to track, and the road surface is good. Between the numbered bends are long sweeping curves through forest, and the views back over Salem improve steadily - by the high teens the city is a grid on the plain far below. It is a gentler climb than the Ooty or Kozhikode ghats and our drivers take it at a measured pace. What changes fastest is the air: the temperature drops perceptibly, the vegetation turns from dry scrub to coffee under silver oak shade, and by the top the whole character of the place is different from the plain twenty minutes behind. Yercaud town sits around the lake at the top. About 230 kilometres one way via NH-44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem, then the Shevaroy ghat road. A minibus takes 5 to 5 hours 30 minutes, of which the final climb accounts for roughly an hour. Leaving Bangalore by 6:00 am puts your group on the hill before lunch.
Twenty, all numbered, over roughly 28 kilometres of ghat road from the plains near Salem. A 12 to 24 seater minibus handles them comfortably and this is the size class we recommend. Anything substantially larger is slow on the climb and awkward at the bends and at the parking areas on top, which is why we pair vehicles rather than sending a coach for groups above 24.
It is possible but not advisable. A same-day return means about eleven hours of driving including the ghat in both directions, leaving under four hours on the hill. Two days and one night is the right length: arrive by midday, take the lake and Lady's Seat in the afternoon, and use the full second day for the loop road, Pagoda Point and Killiyur Falls.
Yes, one. Tamil Nadu is entered at Hosur, about 40 kilometres from Bangalore, and a commercial vehicle needs a valid interstate permit with the associated tax paid. We arrange it as part of the booking and itemise it separately in the written quote, along with toll, parking and GST, all of which sit outside the base fare.
Fare starts from around Rs 15,000. The Tamil Nadu permit, toll, parking, driver night halt and GST are billed separately and itemised in the quote. The final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours, so adding Hogenakkal or extra days on the hill adjusts the figure accordingly.
It is common on this road, since the bends are continuous for about an hour. Sitting forward, looking ahead rather than at a phone, and taking medication before the climb starts rather than during it all help. Tell us at booking if anyone in the group is sensitive and the driver will pace the ascent more slowly and build in a halt partway up.
October to June. The Summer Festival in May is the peak draw, with a flower show, boat race and cultural programmes, though the town fills completely and accommodation needs booking well ahead. Killiyur Falls is at its best just after the monsoon from around October. The monsoon months themselves bring mist that hides the viewpoints you came for.
It is the most demanding thing on the hill: roughly a kilometre and a half down on steps and rough path through forest, and a hard climb back in humid weather. For a mixed-age group the sensible plan is for the fitter members to go down while others wait at the top. Allow two hours. Skip it entirely with elderly travellers and build the day around the viewpoints instead.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance as part of the booking. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but personal travel insurance for passengers needs to be arranged independently. Groups travelling under a corporate or school policy should confirm their own coverage before departure.
We do not operate sleeper buses. For overnight and multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts, and arrange hotel accommodation along the route where the itinerary calls for it. For Yercaud that means a night on the hill itself, or in Salem at the foot of the ghat if accommodation on top is full during festival season.
