Places to Visit in Thekkady

Periyar Lake and the Tiger Reserve
The lake was created in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar dam, drowning a valley of forest, and the standing dead trees in the shallows are its signature image. The reserve around it covers around nine hundred square kilometres of the Cardamom Hills and holds elephant, gaur, sambar, wild dog and tiger, though the last is rarely seen. The boat trip takes you along the shoreline where animals come down to drink. Visit on the earliest trip you can get. Sightings are never guaranteed and anyone promising them is selling something, but elephant and gaur at the water are common enough on a morning boat.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
The first four hours are the fastest of the journey, on six-lane NH 44. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Electronic City before 5:30 AM, because arriving at Thekkady in the afternoon rather than the evening is what makes the next morning boat possible. The Thoppur ghat between Dharmapuri and Salem is the first of two gradients on this route - four-laned but steep enough that loaded trucks crawl - and our drivers hold back rather than joining in. Salem has the best highway restaurants on the corridor and is the natural breakfast halt.

Dindigul
Lock City of India
Fast, flat four-lane highway south through the Kongu plains, and the easiest driving of the day. Namakkal has the eighteen-foot monolithic Anjaneyar at the base of its rock fort. Karur follows on the Amaravathi, the home textile capital. Dindigul is where the route leaves the north-south corridor and turns west toward the hills, and it lands almost exactly at lunch on an early departure - which is convenient, because the Thalappakatti biryani that originated here is the most famous food stop on this highway. Beyond Dindigul the Western Ghats begin to appear properly on the horizon for the first time.

Cumbum
Grape Valley of South India
The road runs west through Batlagundu, where the Kodaikanal road branches north, and into Theni district at the foot of the Ghats. The mountains are close now and the country changes - irrigated, green, and hemmed in by hills on the western side. Bodinayakkanur lies a short way west of Theni and is where most of the Indian cardamom crop is auctioned; the trade defines the town. The Cumbum valley beyond is grape country. Panneer Thratchai grapes grown on this valley floor carry a GI tag and the vineyards run along the road under the wall of the Ghats, which is an unexpected landscape to find in Tamil Nadu. It is worth slowing for, and the roadside grapes in season are worth stopping for.
Thekkady
Lake in the Cardamom Hills
The last thirty kilometres are the climb. The road leaves the valley floor and ascends through forest into the Cardamom Hills, and the temperature drops perceptibly as it goes - by the top the air is cool and smells of spice, which is not a figure of speech in this particular place. The Kerala border comes at Kumily and the interstate permit is presented there, arranged by us in advance. Kumily is the town: a main street of spice shops, homestays and small hotels, with plantations running up the slopes behind it. Thekkady, four kilometres further, is the reserve entrance and the boat landing rather than a settlement. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage - and on a wildlife booking will take you to the ticket counter first if that is what the next morning requires. A 5:00 AM departure puts most travellers in Kumily by around 4:00 PM.

Minibus Packages for the Bangalore to Thekkady Route
Corporate Package
Built for Bangalore IT and manufacturing teams running offsites at the resorts around Kumily and Vandiperiyar, which is one of the more popular offsite destinations within a day of the city. Includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, a named driver for the full multi-day trip, and consolidated monthly billing for registered accounts. The same corporate minibus bangalore stays with your team for the sanctuary transfers, the plantation visit and any Munnar extension, with duty slips signed daily and reconciled against the final invoice. Our corporate travels desk manages the arrangement end to end, including coordinating two vehicles where a team is too large for one.
Family Package
The most common booking on this corridor. Extended families travelling for three to five days, usually pairing Thekkady with Munnar and sometimes running on to Alleppey before returning through Coimbatore. The package is designed around the way families actually move: a late start on sanctuary days, the vehicle waiting during the boat cruise and the spice tour, and a driver who is comfortable with elders and small children on a ghat road. Luggage capacity is the deciding advantage on a week-long Kerala circuit, since a 20 seater swallows what four or five cabs would struggle with, spice purchases included.
Budget Package
For groups where cost per head decides the booking. Non-AC 12 to 17 seater mini buses, point to point, no frills, a clean vehicle and a verified driver. Non-AC works better on this route than most, since the temperature drops steadily from Theni onwards and the last two hours are genuinely cool. The tier suits college groups, community trips and association travel working to a fixed collection per member. The mini bus rate per km in bangalore for the non-AC tier is our lowest, and across a 515 kilometre one-way run the saving across a full group is substantial. The budget tier is about vehicle specification only, never about maintenance standards or driver vetting.
Luxury and Executive Package
Executive mini coach configuration with fewer, wider push-back seats, additional legroom, better sound insulation and premium interiors. On a ten hour drive ending with a ghat climb, the difference is functional rather than cosmetic, and the better suspension is felt in the last hour more than anywhere else. Suited to senior management travel, milestone family trips and any group that wants to stay together without compromising comfort. For a step further, our luxury urbania rental bangalore option in 13 to 17 seater configuration is a premium alternative on the same route and is particularly good on the narrow roads around Chellarkovil and Ramakkalmedu.
Our Minibus Fleet in Bangalore
Our ac minibus rental bangalore fleet covers 12, 14, 17, 20 and 24 seater configurations. We run the full range of group vehicles from the same Bangalore base, so if your headcount changes after booking we can usually move you up or down a category without restarting the process.
• Mini bus — 12 to 24 seater, AC and non-AC, the core vehicle for this route
• Tempo traveller — 8 to 18 seater, for smaller groups on the same corridor
• Bus — 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches for large groups
• Force Urbania — 13 to 17 seater luxury van
• Cars — 4 to 7 seater, from Etios, Dzire, Innova and Commuter through Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross and Fortuner, up to Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, Mercedes-Benz S Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost
Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our vehicles are seated configuration with push-back seats, which matters on this route in particular. We do not recommend attempting the Cumbum ghat section at night, and we plan departures so the climb into Kumily happens in daylight rather than running the group through it in the dark.
Billing Details — What Is Included and What Is Extra
We quote in writing before you book and the quote itemises everything, so there are no surprises at trip end. A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking.
Included in the Quoted Fare
• Base fare and fuel charges
• Driver allowance
Not Included — Billed Separately at Actuals
• Toll charges and parking fees
• Interstate tax and permits for the Karnataka to Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu to Kerala crossings
• Additional driver bata after 9:45 PM
• GST as applicable
• Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage
The garage-to-garage basis is standard across the organised group transport industry in Bangalore. The meter starts when the vehicle leaves our garage for your pickup point and ends when it returns. We factor this into the written quote, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. Vehicle insurance and full statutory driver and vehicle compliance are maintained across the fleet.

What Our Customers Say About Our Minibus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Thekkady Minibus
The bangalore to thekkady distance is approximately 515 kilometres via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Theni and Cumbum, which works out to ten to eleven hours including halts. The last twenty-five kilometres are a ghat climb from the Cumbum valley up to Kumily, so we plan a 4:30 AM departure from Bangalore to make sure that section is driven in daylight. Groups that prefer a gentler pace break the journey overnight at Dindigul or Madurai and arrive by late morning on day two.
Pricing starts from Rs 37,720. The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Charged separately at actuals are toll and parking, interstate tax and permits for both the Tamil Nadu and Kerala crossings, additional driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and every charge appears as a line item in the written quote you receive within 2 hours.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and guarantees the specific mini bus variant on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card. A receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and the balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance.
Yes, two of them. The vehicle crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu near Hosur and again from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at Kumily, and each crossing needs a valid interstate permit. Both are billed at actuals rather than absorbed into the base rate, and we arrange all the documentation before departure so the group does nothing at the check posts. Our drivers handle these crossings routinely, and the Kumily post is usually a matter of minutes with the paperwork in order.
Yes. The climb from Lower Camp to Kumily is around twenty-five kilometres of hairpins on a well-surfaced road, and our 12 to 24 seater mini buses run it regularly with drivers experienced on the section. It is slower than the highway, roughly forty minutes to an hour, and we plan the schedule around doing it in daylight. Very large 45 to 50 seater coaches are workable but noticeably slower on this stretch, which is why groups of thirty or more often prefer two mini buses.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our vehicles are seated configuration with push-back seats. On this route we would not recommend overnight travel in any case, since the ghat section into Kumily is best driven in daylight. Where a group wants to split the journey, we plan a hotel halt at Dindigul or Madurai instead, which is more comfortable and safer than continuous night driving.
Our minibus hire bangalore fleet covers 12, 14, 17, 20 and 24 seater configurations in AC and non-AC. Under twelve passengers, an 8 to 18 seater tempo traveller is usually more economical. Above twenty-four we operate 27 to 50 seater buses including Volvo and Benz coaches. We recommend the right size based on your headcount, luggage and the roads on your itinerary, since the smaller viewpoints around Chellarkovil and Ramakkalmedu suit a mini bus better than a coach.
Yes, and this is how most groups book it. The same vehicle and driver stay with you throughout, covering the sanctuary transfers, the spice plantation visit, Chellarkovil, Vandanmedu and Ramakkalmedu, and then the onward leg to Munnar, Alleppey or back through Madurai. Multi-day bookings are billed on total kilometres and hours with a per-day minimum plus driver allowance. Share your day-wise itinerary at enquiry stage and we quote the whole trip in one number, which is how a munnar thekkady tour package from bangalore is usually structured.
Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure carries no charge and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Between 48 and 72 hours the charge is 10 percent of the total fare, between 24 and 48 hours it is 25 percent, and between 12 and 24 hours it is 50 percent. Multi-day outstation trips to Thekkady need a minimum 7-day notice for a full refund. Date changes and vehicle upgrades with more than 24 hours notice are accommodated at no penalty, subject to availability.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if they wish to be covered. All vehicles carry valid insurance and full statutory compliance, and every driver is verified with a commercial licence and route experience, but personal passenger cover is not part of the booking. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your travel date, Bangalore pickup location, group size and day-wise itinerary. A written itemised quote follows within 2 hours; confirm it, pay the 20 percent advance, and you receive driver details, vehicle registration and the full billing breakdown in writing. Our mini bus booking online and WhatsApp enquiry lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
