Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta

At 1450 metres, Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta is the highest peak inside Bandipur and takes its name from the near-permanent mist, called himavad in Kannada, that blankets the hill through much of the year. A small ancient temple dedicated to Venugopalaswamy sits at the summit and draws a steady stream of pilgrims alongside nature lovers, with panoramic views over the Nilgiri foothills on clearer days. Visitor timings are restricted to between 8:30 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon to limit disturbance to wildlife, and venturing beyond the temple premises is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act, so this is best treated as a focused half day visit rather than an extended trek.

Moyar River and Gorge Viewpoint

Forming the natural boundary between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the Moyar River cuts a dramatic gorge through the forest and is one of the most photographed viewpoints on this route, with the river visible winding through deep forested valleys far below. Elephants are frequently spotted grazing along the valley floor from this vantage point, and the relative distance from the main safari roads keeps this spot quieter than the more crowded viewing zones inside the park. The Moyar safari zone built around this river is also known for tiger and leopard sightings, making it one of the more sought after zones for serious wildlife photographers.

Nugu River

Running through the heart of the reserve, the Nugu River is one of Bandipur's key water sources and a reliable spot to watch animals coming down to drink, particularly during the drier months when water becomes scarce elsewhere in the forest. The Nugu safari zone, one of the lesser visited sections of the park, offers a quieter alternative to the busier Mysore zone, and the riverbank itself provides a scenic backdrop for photography even outside a formal safari, when viewed from designated forest department vantage points.

Mudumalai National Park

Just across the state border in Tamil Nadu, roughly 20 kilometres from Bandipur, Mudumalai National Park forms a single contiguous forest ecosystem with Bandipur and shares much of the same wildlife, including elephants, tigers, gaur, and a healthy population of dholes. Many travellers extend their Bandipur trip with a half day safari here for a different terrain profile and a fresh set of safari zones, though this requires a separate entry permit and safari booking managed by the Tamil Nadu forest department rather than Karnataka's system.

Bandipur Interpretation Centre

Located near the main safari booking counter, the Bandipur Interpretation Centre is a useful first stop for anyone unfamiliar with the reserve's ecology, with information boards covering the park's flora, fauna, and conservation history, along with practical safety guidelines for the safari itself. The centre also houses a small souvenir shop and functions as the starting point for booking safari tickets, making it a natural first halt after arriving in Bandipur, particularly for first-time visitors who want context before heading into the forest.

Sonapura Katte Lake

A quieter, less commercialised spot tucked away from the main safari roads, Sonapura Katte Lake offers calm water framed by hills and greenery, making it a pleasant stop for travellers who want a break from wildlife spotting in favour of simple scenery. The lake does not draw the same crowds as the park's more famous viewpoints, which makes it a good option for a peaceful morning or evening visit, particularly for photographers looking for reflections and soft light away from vehicle traffic.
