Places to Visit in Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake is the centrepiece of the hill station and the attraction that almost every visitor sees first. Created artificially in 1863 under British administration, the lake spans around 60 acres in a distinctive star shape and sits at an elevation of about 2,285 metres, surrounded on all sides by forest and the pleasant streets of the town. Boating is the primary activity, with pedal boats, row boats and motor boats available for hire, and the shoreline path of around five kilometres is one of the most popular walks in the region, combining lake views with glimpses into the pine forest on the hillsides above. Cycling around the lake on rented bicycles is another favourite, particularly in the early morning when the mist is still on the water and the traffic is light. The proximity of Kodaikanal Lake to Bryant Park, the market street, and the main accommodation cluster makes it the natural starting point for a day of sightseeing in the town, and it tends to look its best in the late afternoon light when the western sky reflects across the water.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Hosur
Tamil Nadu border crossing
The first stage of the journey covers around 45 kilometres from Bangalore city through the Electronic City corridor and out toward Hosur on the Tamil Nadu border. This is the exit corridor from Bangalore for all routes heading south and southeast into Tamil Nadu, so traffic here during weekday peak hours and weekend mornings can be heavy, particularly through the Electronic City flyover and the Silk Board junction for travellers starting from the southern and eastern parts of the city. The recommendation for a Bangalore to Kodaikanal cab departure is to leave between four and five in the morning to clear this section cleanly before the traffic builds, or alternatively after nine-thirty when the morning peak has eased. Hosur, a rapidly growing industrial town, marks the Tamil Nadu state border and is a natural first stop for fuel and an early breakfast, with a good selection of highway restaurants serving both South Indian and North Indian food. The road condition on this section is generally good and the drive into Hosur is uneventful once the Bangalore city congestion is cleared.

Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri
mango orchards and rocky hills
From Hosur, NH 44 continues southwest through Krishnagiri and then Dharmapuri, covering around 100 additional kilometres and bringing the total from Bangalore to roughly 145 kilometres. This is where the landscape of the journey takes on a distinctly different character from the urban and peri-urban environment around Bangalore: the countryside opens into rolling semi-arid terrain with scrub vegetation, rocky outcrops and, in season, the famous Krishnagiri mango orchards that line the roadsides and supply much of Tamil Nadu's mango production. Krishnagiri town itself is a major junction and commercial hub, well-stocked with fuel stations, ATMs and a variety of restaurants, making it the most practical mid-morning stop for a longer break if the journey started at dawn. The Krishnagiri Reservoir is visible from certain stretches of the highway approaching the town and offers a pleasant view of blue water against the rocky hills. Dharmapuri, continuing south, is another significant town with its own fort and temple complex that history-minded travellers may want to note. This stretch is particularly comfortable to drive and the NH 44 is in good condition for most of the distance.

Salem
Roughly the halfway point of the journey
From Dharmapuri to Salem the route continues on NH 44 for approximately 65 kilometres, bringing the total distance from Bangalore to around 210 kilometres and marking roughly the halfway point of the full journey to Kodaikanal. Salem is one of Tamil Nadu's largest cities and an important industrial and textile hub, and the approach to and through the city can involve some traffic congestion, particularly around the commercial centre and the Yercaud Ghat road junction. For the purposes of the Kodaikanal trip, Salem is primarily a break stop: fuel, a proper lunch, or a coffee at one of the highway restaurants that cluster around the NH 44 corridor through the city. The road through Salem then continues on the Salem-Coimbatore national highway bypass and connects back to the main south-going highway toward Dindigul, which is more direct than passing through the city centre on the older road. For travellers leaving Bangalore very early, Salem is typically the right time for a proper meal break, arriving around half past eight to nine in the morning.

Dindigul
Fertile farmland of the Kongu Nadu region
The stretch from Salem to Dindigul covers around 130 kilometres and is one of the longer uninterrupted highway drives on the journey, passing through the agricultural heart of central Tamil Nadu with irrigated fields, small towns and the characteristic landscape of the Kongu Nadu region. The road passes near Namakkal, known for its hilltop fort and Anjaneya Temple carved into a cave, and through or around Karur, an important weaving and textile town, before reaching Dindigul. Dindigul is a significant city and junction town at the foot of the Palani Hills, known for its distinctive rock fort and for being the last major urban stop before the ghat road to Kodaikanal begins. This is where a Bangalore to Kodaikanal taxi driver typically plans a second break, since the ghat road ahead requires full concentration and it is better to approach it rested and with a full fuel tank. Dindigul's markets and restaurants on the main road offer the regional food of the area, including the famous Dindigul biryani that many travellers specifically stop for.
Kodaikanal
Your Hill Station Destination
From Dindigul, the route continues to Batlagundu and then turns onto the Kodai Ghat Road, which is the final 40-kilometre climb from the plains to the hilltop at Kodaikanal. This is without question the most memorable section of the entire journey: the road climbs sharply through a series of hairpin bends, cutting through eucalyptus plantations, rocky outcrops, shola grasslands and forest as the altitude rises and the temperature drops noticeably with each hundred metres gained. Silver Cascade Falls appears on the left side of the road at around eight kilometres below the town, marking the moment where the full character of the hill destination becomes apparent, and many travellers stop here for photographs and to feel the mist from the waterfall. The ghat road requires a careful, experienced driver at the wheel, with particular attention needed at the sharper bends during monsoon season when wet roads and limited visibility can make the climb more demanding. The arrival into Kodaikanal town after this climb, through pine-scented air and with the immediate drop in temperature from the plains heat, is a genuinely rewarding moment that makes the full journey feel worthwhile.

Minibus Packages for the Kodaikanal Route
All four packages use the same fleet of 17, 21, 26 and 35 seater vehicles. The difference is in specification, itinerary structure and service level, not in the route. Every package is quoted in writing before you pay anything, with the Tamil Nadu permit shown as a separate line.
Corporate Package
For offsites, team outings and MICE movements from Bengaluru tech parks. Executive mini coach with 2x2 pushback seating, luggage bay, charging points and a PA system, which matters more on a nine-hour drive than a short run. GST invoicing, Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval and 30-day credit terms. Convoys run through one point of contact with synchronised departures and a single consolidated permit filing, with pickup from any tech park gate you nominate. Usually a three-day long-weekend format, and our most-requested mini bus rental in Bangalore package for Tamil Nadu hill stations.
Family Package
For extended families and multi-generation trips, which this route attracts heavily in the April to June school holidays. Standard or Executive AC minibus, an extended lunch halt at Dindigul, and a driver briefed to take the ghat gently and stop at viewpoints rather than pushing through. Motion sickness is a real consideration on fifty kilometres of hairpins, so seating is planned for it. Where the group includes elderly travellers, we build the itinerary around Coaker Walk, Bryant Park and the lake rather than Dolphin Nose and the longer walks.
Budget Package
For student groups, college trips and cost-conscious travellers. Standard AC 21 seater mini bus rental Bangalore or 26 seater mini bus Bangalore on a clean per-kilometre rate with a transparent daily minimum and no surprise line items. Best value is the 26 and 35 seater, where per-head cost across 930 km of round-trip running drops well below multiple cars, and the interstate permit is shared across the group rather than paid four times. Vehicle documents, driver credentials and insurance papers supplied in advance for institutional approval.
Luxury Package
Premium mini coach with 2x2 recliner seating, extra legroom, curtains, better suspension for the ghat section and a chauffeur in formal attire. Suited to VIP delegations, client hosting and groups booking the higher-end resorts on the Coaker Walk and Pillar Rocks side. Above 35 passengers a full-size coach is possible on the highway legs, subject to a check on hotel access and town parking, which is the binding constraint in Kodaikanal rather than the ghat itself.

• Driver allowance.
Excluded from the Fare
• Toll and parking charges.
• Inter-state tax and the Tamil Nadu permit, billed at actual cost.
• Additional driver bata after 9.45 pm.

What Our Customers Say About Our Minibus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kodaikannal Minibus
The Bangalore to Kodaikanal distance is about 465 km via NH44 through Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul and Batlagundu. A minibus takes 9 to 10 hours including two meal halts. Mapping apps commonly show 7.5 hours, which assumes a car and does not account for a loaded minibus on fifty kilometres of hairpin ghat. Plan the day around the honest figure.
A Bangalore to Kodaikanal mini bus rental starts from around Rs Rs 30,680 for the vehicle, it won't include Tamil Nadu permit, toll and GST.
Yes. Kodaikanal is in Tamil Nadu, so a Karnataka-registered commercial vehicle needs a Tamil Nadu permit. Tejas Travels files it before departure and bills it at actual cost as a separate line. It is excluded from the base fare, which is why quotes need comparing carefully; a suspiciously low all-in figure for this route has usually left the permit out. Once filed, the permit cost is non-refundable if you cancel.
Yes. The Batlagundu ghat is a well-used public road carrying state transport buses daily, and our drivers run it regularly. It is simply slower than the highway: budget ninety minutes to two hours for the last fifty kilometres. The real constraint is not the climb but parking and access in town, particularly around the lake and Coaker Walk in peak season, which is why we ask for your hotel name at booking.
Usually not directly, and it is better to know this before you book. Berijam sits inside a reserve forest and needs a same-day permit from the Forest Department office at Moonjikal, issued in the morning with a strictly limited number of vehicles per day. Non-Tamil Nadu registered vehicles are sometimes refused on busy days. The practical approach is to park the minibus and use a locally permitted vehicle or the forest department eco-bus for the Berijam leg. Tell us at enquiry stage and we will build the day around it.
Three days and two nights is the right length. A kodaikanal 2 days itinerary technically works, but it means two full driving days with roughly one day on the ground, which most groups regret. Three days gives you an arrival afternoon at the lake, a full sightseeing day across the western plateau, and an unhurried departure. Four days if Berijam, Poombarai or Mannavanur are on the list.
Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Excluded: toll and parking, inter-state tax and the Tamil Nadu permit, additional driver bata after 9.45 pm, and GST. Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from garage to garage. Everything is itemised in the written quote before you pay the advance.
A 20 per cent advance on the total fare confirms the booking. Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your date, pickup location, itinerary, hotel name and group size. A written quote follows within two hours, and once you pay by UPI, bank transfer or card, a receipt arrives within 30 minutes with driver and vehicle details, and the permit is filed.
April to June is peak season and the reason most Bengaluru groups come, though it is also the most crowded and most expensive for accommodation. September and October are quieter with good visibility. Be careful about late October through December, when the northeast monsoon brings persistent fog and heavy rain to the Batlagundu ghat and viewpoints stay clouded for days. We still run the route then, with more conservative timings.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance, and passengers are advised to arrange their own cover. The standard driver allowance is included in the quoted fare, but an additional driver bata applies after 9.45 pm. That comes up more often here than on shorter runs, since a late departure from Kodaikanal regularly puts arrival in Bengaluru past midnight. Leaving by mid-morning on the return day avoids it.
