Places to Visit in Munnar

Top Station
Around thirty-two kilometres from Munnar at roughly 1,700 metres, on the Tamil Nadu border, Top Station gives the long view east over the Theni plains and is where the Neelakurinji is best seen when it blooms. The name comes from the old ropeway that once carried tea down to the valley from here. Visit early - the view goes as soon as cloud builds, which on many days is by mid-morning, and by afternoon you may see nothing at all. It is a straightforward drive out and back of about ninety minutes each way with stops.
The Tea Museum and the Estates
The KDHP tea museum on the edge of town covers the history of planting in the High Range with old machinery, a working demonstration of processing and a tasting - it is a modest place and a genuinely interesting hour, and it explains the landscape you have been driving through. Several estates also run walks. The tea itself is worth buying here rather than elsewhere. Visit in the afternoon when the museum is quieter, and note that it is closed on Mondays and during certain periods, so confirm before building a day around it.
Marayoor Sandalwood and Dolmens
Forty kilometres north on the road you came in on, Marayoor holds the only natural sandalwood forest in Kerala, protected and patrolled - you cannot wander into it, but the road runs through sandal country and the forest department runs regulated access. The town is equally known for its jaggery, made from cane grown in the valley and carrying a GI tag, sold in dark cakes at roadside stalls. And scattered across the hills are muniyara - megalithic dolmens, stone burial chambers dated to around three thousand years old, standing in fields. Visit as a half day from Munnar or as stops on the way in.
Attukad, Lakkam Falls and Chinnar
Attukad, around nine kilometres from Munnar on the Pallivasal road, is a broad cascade in a wooded gorge and the closest of the falls. Lakkam sits on the Marayoor road and is easier to reach. Both run properly from June through December and reduce considerably in the dry months. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, on the eastern approach, is a rain-shadow forest quite unlike the wet slopes around Munnar, holding the grizzled giant squirrel and offering guided treks through the department. Visit the falls in season and Chinnar as a half day for anyone interested in what makes this range unusual.

Dindigul is where the route turns west toward the hills, and it lands almost exactly at lunch on an early departure - the Thalappakatti biryani that originated here is the most famous food stop on this highway. Palani follows, with the Murugan temple standing on Sivagiri hill above the town - the third of the six Arupadai Veedu and one of the most visited temples in Tamil Nadu. Families combining a Munnar trip with darshan often stop here, and it adds an hour or two rather than a day. Beyond Palani the Western Ghats are properly in view.

Rain Shadow Sanctuary
The road runs west through Udumalpet, a market town at the foot of the hills with the Amaravathi reservoir and the Anamalai reserve behind it, and then begins to climb toward the Kerala border. The country here is dry and open, with the wall of the Ghats ahead. Chinnar is the border sanctuary and it is genuinely unusual - a dry deciduous forest in the rain shadow of the range, quite unlike the wet slopes on the Munnar side, holding the grizzled giant squirrel and a good deal else. The Kerala interstate permit is presented here, arranged by us in advance. From this point on the road is forest ghat and wildlife on the carriageway is a real possibility.

The climb from Chinnar through Marayoor is the best part of the drive. Marayoor holds the only natural sandalwood forest in Kerala, protected and patrolled, and the valley below it grows the cane that makes the GI-tagged jaggery sold in dark cakes at roadside stalls. Scattered across the surrounding hills are muniyara - megalithic dolmens around three thousand years old, standing in open fields, which most people drive past without knowing what they are. Beyond Marayoor the road climbs into the High Range and the landscape changes into the tea geometry that Munnar is known for - contoured slopes, shade trees, and the estates running to the ridgelines. Munnar town itself is compact and congested at the centre; most accommodation is on the estate roads outside it, several on narrow approach lanes, so send us the property name at booking and we will confirm access. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For trekking and forest department programmes the department operates its own arrangements, which are worth checking directly.
Yes, and it is the most common Kerala hill itinerary from Bangalore. The two are around four hours apart through good hill country, and two nights at each gives you the tea estates and a tiger reserve in one trip. Adding Alleppey or Kochi makes a full circuit of six or seven days.
