Patala Ganga and the Ropeway
Patala Ganga is the bathing ghat on the Krishna below the temple, reached by a long flight of steps or by the ropeway that runs down the hillside - the descent is several hundred feet and the ropeway is the sensible option for most visitors, particularly on the way back up. Pilgrims bathe here before darshan, as at the great river ghats elsewhere. Visit in the morning while it is cool. The ropeway has its own timings and closes in poor weather, and queues build on weekends and festival days, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
Srisailam Dam
One of the largest hydroelectric projects in India, holding back the Krishna in a deep gorge a short distance from the temple, with a viewpoint over the reservoir and the spillway. When the gates are open after a good monsoon the volume of water is genuinely startling, and it is worth timing a visit for. There is a lit view in the evenings. Note that the dam is a controlled installation, photography is restricted in places and access arrangements change, so follow signage and local direction rather than assuming. It is a fifteen-minute drive from the temple and takes under an hour.
Akkamahadevi Caves
Around sixteen kilometres upstream, these limestone caves on the Krishna are associated with the twelfth-century Kannada poet-saint Akka Mahadevi, who is said to have meditated here, and they hold a naturally formed lingam deep inside. The only access is by boat from Patala Ganga, and the round trip takes two to three hours on the water. Visit if you have the time and the day allows - it is not a compulsory stop and some visitors find the caves modest, but the boat journey up the gorge between forested cliffs is the real experience. Boats operate seasonally and depend on water levels, so confirm on the day.
Sakshi Ganapati and Sikharam
Sakshi Ganapati, around three kilometres from the temple, is where by tradition Ganapati records the visit of each pilgrim to Mallikarjuna - the name means the witness, and devotees stop here to have their darshan noted. Srisailam Sikharam, some eight kilometres away, is the highest point in the area and gives a view of the temple gopuram from a distance; tradition holds that sighting the gopuram from Sikharam carries particular merit. Visit both as a short circuit after darshan. Together they take around ninety minutes and they complete the visit as pilgrims have made it for centuries.
The Nallamala Forest
Srisailam sits inside the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in India by area, covering the Nallamala hills across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The forest is home to the Chenchu, one of the particularly vulnerable tribal groups of the region, who have lived in these hills for a very long time and whose relationship with the Srisailam shrine is recorded in local tradition. Visit in the sense of noticing where you are: the ghat drive in and out is through core tiger habitat, wildlife crossings are a genuine possibility, and the night restriction on the road exists for good reason.

The route leaves Bangalore north on NH 44 past the international airport, and this is the easiest exit from the city of any route we run - the highway is six-lane from the start and the airport traffic thins after Devanahalli. Our drivers aim to be past the airport before 5:30 AM on a pilgrimage departure, which on this route is entirely about clearing the forest ghat with hours in hand at the far end. Devanahalli is worth knowing about even if you do not stop: Tipu Sultan was born in the fort here in 1751, and the walls and bastions still stand a short distance off the highway. Chikkaballapur follows, with the Nandi Hills rising to the west - the range where the Arkavathi, Palar, Ponnaiyar, Papagni and Chitravathi all rise, which is unusual enough to be worth a mention as you pass.
Anantapur
Abode of Sathya Sai Baba
Bagepalli is the last Karnataka town and the Andhra border follows shortly after at Kodikonda. A short detour off the highway here reaches Lepakshi, where the sixteenth-century Veerabhadra temple holds the celebrated hanging pillar that does not quite rest on the floor, extensive surviving mural work on the ceilings, and a monolithic Nandi carved from a single boulder that is among the largest in India. It is a forty-five minute detour and one of the finest Vijayanagara sites anywhere. Penukonda comes next - the fortress city the Vijayanagara empire retreated to after the fall of Hampi, with the Gagan Mahal and hill fortifications still standing. Puttaparthi lies off the highway to the west, the ashram town of Sathya Sai Baba and a destination in its own right. Anantapur, the district headquarters, is the groundnut capital of India and the natural breakfast halt on this route, with good options on the bypass.
Kurnool
First Capital of Andhra State
A hundred and fifty kilometres of continuing excellent divided highway through dry Rayalaseema country. Gooty announces itself with its fort - a Vijayanagara and later Maratha stronghold on a steep granite outcrop directly above the road, once held by Murari Rao and taken by Hyder Ali after a long siege. It is visible from the highway and worth looking up for. Kurnool is the pivot of this journey and the point every traveller should understand. It sits at the confluence of the Tungabhadra and the Hundri, it was the first capital of Andhra State between 1953 and 1956, and it is the last substantial city before the road changes character entirely. Our drivers treat it as the checkpoint: fuel fully here, eat properly here, and confirm the time, because what follows takes as long as the previous 360 kilometres despite being half the distance.
Atmakur
Gateway to the Nallamala
Beyond Kurnool the highway ends and the road becomes undivided two-lane through Nandikotkur and on toward Atmakur. The surface is generally reasonable but the character is completely different - villages sit on the road, local traffic and agricultural vehicles use it, and the pace drops to something closer to half what it was. Travellers unfamiliar with this route consistently misjudge this stretch. The landscape changes with it. The dry open Rayalaseema plain gives way to scrub and then to the wooded foothills of the Nallamala, and the hills begin to close in. Atmakur is the last town of any size before the forest, with fuel, food and basic services, and our drivers stop here as standing practice regardless of what the gauge says - beyond it there is essentially nothing until Srisailam.

The final eighty kilometres run into and through the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in India, on a winding ghat road through genuinely dense forest. Mobile coverage is patchy, there is no fuel, and wildlife crossings are a real possibility rather than a theoretical one. Traffic through this section is restricted by the forest department at night, commonly reported as no vehicles after around 9:00 PM, and the timings are set by the forest authorities rather than published permanently, so our drivers confirm the position before departure. It is also the best part of the drive. The road climbs through unbroken canopy with the Krishna gorge somewhere below to the north, and the arrival at Srisailam - a temple town on a plateau in the middle of a tiger reserve, with the dam and the river in a gorge below it - is unlike any other pilgrimage arrival in South India. Yes, with planning. The temple complex itself is manageable, and the ropeway at Pathala Ganga avoids a long flight of steps. What needs care is the drive, which is why we recommend the Kurnool night halt rather than a single eleven-hour day. Mallela Theertham involves several hundred steps down and back and is best skipped for older travellers.
Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, is the largest festival of the year and the town fills completely, with accommodation booked out well in advance. Ugadi and the Karthika month also draw very large crowds. October to March is otherwise the most comfortable window. We do not operate sleeper buses, which matters here because overnight coaches are a common way of covering this distance. The forest gate closures rule out an overnight arrival in any case. For our multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts and planned driver night halts, with a hotel night at Kurnool being the usual arrangement on this route.
