Swamimalai Hills
The highest point on the plateau at around 4,300 feet, reached by a trek of roughly four kilometres from the base near the Nature Park - a proper walk of two to three hours up through scrub and boulder country, with the reward being a view over the Eastern Ghats and the plains a long way below. There is a temple at the summit. Visit early in the morning, carry water, and treat it as a hike rather than a viewpoint. It is the main reason Yelagiri has a reputation among trekkers and adventure groups, and it is genuinely worth doing if the group is up to it.
Jalagamparai Falls
On the Attaru river below the plateau, around ten kilometres from the lake and then a walk down, Jalagamparai drops into a rocky pool in a wooded setting - a modest waterfall by South Indian standards and a pleasant one, with a temple nearby. Visit between July and January when there is genuine water; outside that window it reduces to very little and the walk is not worth it. The path down is uneven and slippery after rain, so footwear matters, and it is not suitable for anyone unsteady. The approach road is rough in places.
Paragliding and Adventure
Yelagiri has built a reputation for adventure sports that is out of proportion to its size. The annual paragliding festival draws pilots from across India and tandem flights operate for visitors, with the plateau edge giving reliable conditions in season. Rock climbing, rappelling and trekking are all run by local operators, and there is a well-established base for it. Visit in the season, which generally runs through the drier months - operations depend on wind and weather and are suspended in poor conditions, and tandem flights should be booked with the operator in advance rather than assumed on arrival.
The Telescope Observatory
A small public observatory on the plateau run for visitors, with a telescope and viewing sessions after dark. Yelagiri has genuinely dark skies by the standards of anywhere within three hours of Bangalore - there is very little settlement on the plateau and almost no light spill - and on a clear night that is the most distinctive thing the hill offers. Visit after sunset and check the session timings locally, since they vary with the season and close in cloudy weather. For families with children this is often the part of the weekend they remember.
The Silk Farm, Herbal Farm and Velavan Temple
Three easy stops that fill the gaps in a weekend. The government silk farm shows sericulture from worm to cocoon and is a short, genuinely interesting visit. The herbal farm cultivates medicinal plants with an Ayurvedic centre attached. The Velavan temple, a Murugan shrine on the plateau, is the principal local temple and the focus of the hill festival calendar. Visit any of them in a spare hour. None is a destination in itself, and together they make the point about Yelagiri: it is a place to be rather than a place to see, which is why people either love it or leave puzzled.

The only part of the day that depends on timing rather than road. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Electronic City before 8:00 AM on a weekend departure, because the difference between clearing Silk Board before and after the morning build-up is close to forty minutes. Passengers boarding at Whitefield or Marathahalli are routed via Sarjapur and Attibele to bypass Chandapura. The road opens out immediately after the Attibele toll and the Tamil Nadu border. Hosur is called the Little England of India for its unusually temperate climate, and it sits at the centre of a rose-growing belt that supplies flowers across South India alongside major two-wheeler and automotive plants. Most travellers do not halt here. From Hosur the highway is six-lane and excellent, and on a route this short the rest of the drive is entirely straightforward.
Krishnagiri
Mango Capital of Tamil Nadu
Fifty fast kilometres of six-lane divided highway with hill views on both sides. This is where the drive settles, and for an 8:00 AM departure Krishnagiri arrives around 9:45 AM - right for a late breakfast if you have not eaten. Krishnagiri is the mango belt of Tamil Nadu, and between April and July the roadside Banganapalli and Neelam stalls are worth stopping for on their own. A ninth-century hill fort built on a granite outcrop is visible from the highway, and the KRP Dam catchment nearby makes a quiet break point. This is also the junction where the roads part: NH 44 continues south toward Dharmapuri and Salem, while our route takes NH 48 east toward Vellore and Chennai.
Vaniyambadi
Leather Town of Tamil Nadu
Fifty kilometres east on excellent highway through the Bargur country, where the hills to the north give their name to a hardy indigenous cattle breed kept by Lingayat herders - one of the recognised native breeds of Tamil Nadu and a genuine piece of local identity. Vaniyambadi is a leather town, and has been for generations - tanning and finished leather goods from here and from Ambur supply buyers across Europe, and the trade defines both places. Ambur, a short distance further east, is the other thing this stretch of road is known for: Ambur biryani, made with seeraga samba rice and a distinct method, is among the most celebrated regional biryanis in India and the original establishments are still here. It is around twenty kilometres past the Yelagiri turn, which makes it a detour rather than a stop - but on the return leg it is one very much worth taking.
Yelagiri
Hill of Fourteen Hamlets
The route turns south off the highway toward Tirupattur and Ponneri, where the ghat begins. Fourteen kilometres and fourteen numbered hairpin bends climb to the plateau in twenty-five to thirty minutes - a gentle ascent by South Indian standards, well surfaced, and carrying far less traffic than the ghats to the bigger hill stations. What arrives at the top is not a town. Yelagiri is a plateau of fourteen scattered hamlets with a lake near the middle, orchards, rose gardens and jackfruit trees between them, and roads connecting the villages rather than a centre. The temperature drops perceptibly on the climb and the air changes. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. Note that some resort and homestay properties sit on narrow lanes among the hamlets, so send us the property name at booking and we will confirm what can reach the door. No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance as part of the booking. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but personal travel insurance for passengers needs to be arranged independently. This is worth doing on a Yelagiri trip where paragliding, rock climbing or rappelling are on the itinerary.
We do not operate sleeper buses. For overnight and multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts, and arrange hotel accommodation along the route where the itinerary calls for it. On this route the drive is short enough that groups stay on the hill for the destination rather than needing an overnight to break the journey.
