Male Mahadeshwara Hills
MM Hills, around 130 kilometres from Mysore in the eastern part of the district, is one of the most significant Shaiva pilgrimage centres in southern Karnataka, drawing very large numbers of devotees particularly during festivals. The temple is dedicated to Male Mahadeshwara, a saint venerated as an incarnation of Shiva, and the oral epic sung in his honour is a major tradition in Kannada folk literature. The approach is the memorable part: seventy-seven hairpin bends climbing through the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. Visit early. The road is narrow, the forest stretch has wildlife, and it is not somewhere to be driving after dark.
Bandipur National Park
Among the best-known tiger reserves in India, covering over 870 square kilometres largely within this district and forming part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve alongside Nagarhole, Mudumalai and Wayanad. Elephants, gaur, sambar, chital, sloth bear and leopard are regularly seen; tigers less so, as always. Safaris run in fixed morning and afternoon slots operated by the forest department and Jungle Lodges. Visit between October and May, with the drier months often better for sightings as animals concentrate near water. Remember the night traffic closure on the highway through the reserve when planning your arrival and departure.
Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta
The highest point in the Bandipur range at around 1,450 metres, crowned by a fourteenth-century Venugopalaswamy temple and almost permanently wrapped in mist - Himavad means mist-covered, and the hill earns the name. The view from the summit across the Bandipur forest is among the finest in the state, and elephant herds are frequently seen on the slopes. Visit in the morning. Private vehicles stop at the forest check post and the last stretch is by forest department bus, visiting hours are restricted to roughly 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and cameras and plastic items are often not permitted at the temple, so leave them in the car.
Bharachukki Falls
The Cauvery divides at Shivanasamudra into two falls - Gaganachukki on the Mandya side and Bharachukki on the Chamarajanagar side - and Bharachukki is the broader of the two, dropping in a wide curtain across a rock face with a viewpoint and steps down toward the base. Coracle rides operate below when water levels permit. Visit between August and January, when the flow is genuinely spectacular; by March it thins considerably. Access and coracle operation depend on water levels and are periodically restricted for safety, so confirm close to your travel date. It sits on the Kanakapura route and works well as a stop rather than a destination.
Chamarajeshwara Temple and the Town
The town itself is a working district headquarters rather than a tourist centre, but the Chamarajeshwara temple at its heart is worth the half hour. Built in the early nineteenth century under Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar in Dravidian style, it commemorates his father Chamaraja Wodeyar, after whom the town is named, and the ruler was born here. The town is also the practical base for the district - fuel, ATMs, pharmacies and food - and anyone heading onward to MM Hills or BR Hills should treat it as the last proper service stop, because the forest roads beyond have very little.

The toys are turned on hand lathes from ivory-wood and coloured with natural vegetable dyes, which is why they are safe for small children to chew on, and the craft now carries a GI tag. The workshops and showrooms cluster along the old highway through the town, and a stop of twenty to thirty minutes lets you watch the lathes working and buy directly. It is the single most popular halt on the Bangalore to Mysore corridor for families, and it is genuinely worth the detour off the expressway. Srirangapatna sits on an island in the Cauvery and was the capital of Tipu Sultan, falling to the British in 1799 in a siege that decided the future of southern India. The Ranganathaswamy temple is among the most important Vaishnavite shrines in Karnataka, the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace holds remarkable painted murals, and the Gumbaz mausoleum stands a short distance away. It is a two-hour stop to do properly and a forty-minute one to do quickly, and it is directly on the route. Mysore follows, and for most Chamarajanagar bookings it is the natural halt rather than the destination - the choice of food is wide and this is the last major city before the district. Travellers with time can build in the Palace or Chamundi Hills, though doing so effectively turns a Chamarajanagar trip into a two-day itinerary. Beyond Mysore the road narrows and the character changes as the route turns south toward Nanjangud.
Nanjangud

Twenty-five kilometres south of Mysore on the banks of the Kapila river, Nanjangud is one of the most significant Shaiva pilgrimage centres in Karnataka. The Srikanteshwara temple is very large, with a long history of patronage under the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara rulers and the Mysore Wodeyars, and its scale surprises people who arrive expecting a small-town shrine. The town is called Dakshina Kashi because of the temple standing on a river, in deliberate parallel with Varanasi, and the Rathotsava chariot festival here draws very large crowds. Nanjangud is also known for a locally famous variety of banana and, less romantically, as the site of a substantial pharmaceutical and manufacturing belt. For a Chamarajanagar booking this is the last easy stop, and forty-five minutes at the temple fits comfortably into the day.

The distance is about 180 kilometres one way via NH-948 through Kanakapura, Malavalli and Kollegal. A minibus takes 4 to 4 hours 30 minutes including one halt. The alternative route through Mysore covers a similar distance but is usually slower because of Mysore city traffic. Leaving Bangalore by 5:30 am puts your group in Chamarajanagar town before 10:15 am.
Not comfortably. BR Hills is around 60 kilometres from Chamarajanagar town via Yelandur, and MM Hills is around 90 kilometres in the opposite direction via Kollegal and Hanur, both on ghat roads. Attempting both in one day means eight hours of driving on top of the journey from Bangalore. We recommend picking one, or booking a two-day itinerary with an overnight halt at Kollegal.
Our minibus fleet runs from 12 to 24 seats. Book one size above your headcount so nobody travels with a bag on their lap for four hours. Under seven passengers a car is the more economical choice, and for 8 to 18 a tempo traveller is worth comparing. Above 24, we pair vehicles rather than sending a full-size coach, because large coaches struggle on the ghat sections.
Same-day return in a 12 seater starts from around Rs 14,040. A two-day circuit with BR Hills or MM Hills is quoted separately and includes a driver night halt. The final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours, and toll, parking, interstate tax and GST are billed separately. You get a written quote itemizing every one of these before you pay anything.
No. Vehicle entry charges, forest entry fees and safari tickets at Bandipur, the BRT sanctuary and the Male Mahadeshwara sanctuary are payable directly to the forest department and are not part of the vehicle rental. Our driver will guide you to the correct counter and advise on timings, but the payment is yours to make on site.
No. Private and hired vehicles are stopped at the base and visitors transfer to a forest department vehicle for the final climb into the Bandipur core area. Our minibus will drop your group at the transfer point and wait there. Timings and availability change with forest department rules and season, so confirm the current position when you book rather than assuming.
NH-766 through Bandipur National Park is closed to all traffic between 9 pm and 6 am to protect wildlife crossings. Smaller forest roads and gates close earlier. This matters for scheduling: a group leaving Bandipur late in the evening cannot simply drive through, and our drivers plan the return around it. It is the main reason we suggest an overnight rather than a single-day return.
Yes. Base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance are all included in the quoted rate. Not included are toll and parking, interstate tax, GST, and additional driver bata if the trip runs past 9:45 pm. On a two-day itinerary a driver night halt charge applies and is stated in the quote. All of it is written down before you commit.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance as part of the booking. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required by law, but personal travel insurance for passengers needs to be arranged independently. Groups travelling under a corporate or school policy should confirm their own coverage before departure, which matters more than usual on a wildlife itinerary.
We do not operate sleeper buses. For overnight and multi-day itineraries we deploy seater coaches and minibuses with scheduled rest halts, and arrange hotel accommodation along the route where the itinerary calls for it. For the Chamarajanagar circuit, an overnight at Kollegal, Gundlupet or a forest lodge near BR Hills is the usual arrangement.
