Kere Basadi — The Lake Temple

Kere Basadi — The Lake Temple

This is the reason people make the journey. Known formally as the Chaturmukha Basadi and locally as Kere Basadi, the shrine sits alone on a stone platform in the centre of the Varanga lake. It has four entrances facing the four cardinal directions, and inside, four Tirthankaras — Parshwanatha, Neminatha, Shantinatha and Ananthanatha — stand back to back in the kayotsarga meditation posture, with an idol of Devi Padmavati installed before Parshwanatha. Inscriptions at the neighbouring Neminatha Basadi indicate the lake was excavated in the twelfth century. The priest still rows out every morning to perform the rituals. During and after the monsoon the surface fills with white water lilies, and the varanga lake temple looks exactly like the photographs that circulate every July.

Neminatha Basadi

Neminatha Basadi

A short walk from the lake stands the oldest of the three Varanga shrines, a stone temple roughly seventy feet square with a tiled roof and an ornate torana at the entrance. The main deity is a five-foot idol of Lord Neminatha, and the navaranga hall holds bronze images of all twenty-four Tirthankaras. Because the temple carries some of the oldest datable Jain inscriptions in the Karkala region, historians rate it as important as the lake temple even though tourists photograph it less. Come here first, then walk to the lake — the sequence makes far more sense chronologically.

Chandranatha Basadi and the Varanga Jain Matha

Chandranatha Basadi and the Varanga Jain Matha

The third shrine of the Varanga cluster, also called the Matada Basadi, sits inside the premises of the Jain monastery. It houses a black stone image of Parshwanatha in the standing meditation posture. The matha here is an offshoot of the Humcha Jain Matha and has functioned continuously for centuries, which is why Varanga still hosts Rathotsava, Mahavir Jayanti and Paryushana Parva on a scale you would not expect from a village this size. Modest pilgrim accommodation and simple Jain meals are available here, which matters if you plan an early morning darshan.

Karkala Gommateshwara — Bahubali’s Second Hill

Karkala Gommateshwara — Bahubali’s Second Hill

About twenty-two kilometres from Varanga, a granite monolith of Lord Bahubali stands 42 feet tall on a rocky outcrop, carved from a single block and consecrated in 1432 by the Vijayanagara-era ruler Vira Pandya. It is the second largest statue of its kind in Karnataka after Shravanabelagola, and the climb up the rock-cut steps takes ten minutes and repays you with a view across the Karkala plateau to the Western Ghats. Most visitors booking a bangalore to karkala taxi treat this as the anchor of the trip and Varanga as the discovery.

Chaturmukha Basadi, Karkala

Chaturmukha Basadi, Karkala

Built in 1586 on a low hill facing the Bahubali statue, this four-faced temple is one of the finest examples of Vijayanagara-era Jain stone construction on the coast. Its granite pillars are cut so precisely that the structure has survived four and a half centuries of coastal monsoon with almost no restoration. Twenty-four Tirthankara images look out through the four doorways. Standing between the two hills at sunset, with the monolith on one side and the basadi on the other, is the single best photograph of the whole trip.

Anekere and Padu Tirupati, Karkala

Anekere and Padu Tirupati, Karkala

Anekere, the elephant lake, was once where the royal elephants of Karkala were bathed. Today it is a walkable lakefront in the middle of town with a small island shrine. Beside it stands the Sri Venkataramana Temple, known across Dakshina Kannada as Padu Tirupati or the Tirupati of the West, and it draws a steady stream of devotees who cannot travel to Andhra Pradesh. It is a useful reminder that this region is not exclusively a Jain circuit — the Hindu and Jain traditions here have shared the same towns for six hundred years.

Kudlu Theertha Falls, Hebri

Kudlu Theertha Falls, Hebri

Roughly thirty kilometres from Varanga through the Hebri forest belt, the Sitanadi drops into a deep rock pool at Kudlu Theertha. The last stretch is a jeep track followed by a short forest walk, so this is a monsoon-and-after destination rather than a summer one. Forest department permission is required and the trail closes in heavy rain. If your group is fit and your itinerary has a spare half day, ask your driver to build this in — it is the wildest landscape you will see on the entire trip.

Agumbe — The Cherrapunji of South India

Agumbe — The Cherrapunji of South India

Fifty kilometres north of Varanga, Agumbe records among the highest rainfall anywhere in South India and holds the country’s only permanent rainforest research station devoted to the king cobra. The sunset point at the edge of the ghat looks straight down onto the Arabian Sea plain, and on a clear February evening the view carries for eighty kilometres. Travellers who book a bangalore to agumbe cab as an extension of the Varanga trip usually add Barkana and Onake Abbi falls to the same day.

Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and Sitanadi

Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and Sitanadi

The Agumbe ghat road runs through the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, a corridor of evergreen forest that connects to Kudremukh National Park and shelters tigers, leopards, lion-tailed macaques and hornbills. You will not see big cats from the road, but the Sitanadi nature camp offers guided treks and the drive itself, with mist sitting in the valleys at seven in the morning, is worth the early start. Ask the driver to leave Varanga by six if you want the sanctuary stretch in its best light.

Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, Malpe and Moodbidri

Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, Malpe and Moodbidri

Thirty-seven kilometres west of Varanga sits Udupi, where devotees view the Krishna idol through the silver-plated Kanakana Kindi window, and eight kilometres beyond that lie Malpe beach and the hexagonal basalt columns of St Mary’s Island. Southward, Moodbidri holds the Saavira Kambada Basadi, the thousand-pillar temple of 1430, where no two pillars are carved alike. A bangalore to udupi cab booked as a three-day round trip covers Varanga, Karkala, Moodbidri, Udupi and Malpe comfortably without any backtracking.

Minibus Packages for the Bangalore to Varanga Route

Corporate Package

For Bangalore technology and manufacturing teams travelling west for offsites, CSR programmes and annual outings. Includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, a named driver for the full trip, and consolidated monthly billing for registered accounts. The Agumbe, Sringeri and Varanga triangle works unusually well as an offsite region precisely because it is not a resort circuit — teams end up walking, eating locally and looking at things, which is rather the point. A corporate minibus bangalore booking stays with your team throughout, with duty slips signed daily and reconciled against the final invoice. Our corporate travels desk handles the arrangement end to end, including multi-vehicle movements for larger teams.

Family and Pilgrimage Package

The largest share of bookings here. Jain families running the Shravanabelagola, Varanga, Karkala and Mudabidri circuit make up much of it, and Hindu family groups combining Sringeri, Horanadu, Udupi and Kollur Mookambika make up most of the rest. These itineraries run on temple timings rather than driving hours, and Varanga demands more planning than most because of the midday closure and the boat crossing. We brief drivers on darshan windows and plan halts so that older passengers are not asked to take a ghat descent without a break beforehand. Luggage capacity is the practical advantage on a five to seven day circuit: a 20 seater carries what four cars would struggle with.

Budget Package

For groups where cost per head settles the decision. Non-AC 12 to 17 seater mini buses, point to point, clean vehicle, verified driver, no frills — suited to college groups, photography clubs, community associations and temple committees. The mini bus rate per km in bangalore for the non-AC tier is our lowest, and across 385 kilometres the saving over a full group is significant. The Malnad and coastal climate here is mild for most of the year, so non-AC travels comfortably outside the March to May window. School parties on a school excursion bus rental bangalore booking usually take this tier and add a second vehicle rather than upgrading.

Luxury Package

Executive mini coach configuration with fewer, wider push-back seats, extra legroom, better sound insulation and premium interiors. On a route this long, with a ghat descent at the end of a nine hour day, seat support and cabin noise are what people remember. Suited to senior management travel, milestone family trips and any group that would rather arrive at Varanga still willing to walk to the boat. For a further step up in ride quality on the same route, our luxury urbania rental bangalore option in 13 to 17 seater configuration handles the Agumbe hairpins particularly well.

Our Minibus Fleet in Bangalore

Our ac minibus rental bangalore fleet covers 12, 14, 17, 20 and 24 seater configurations. We run the full range of group vehicles from one Bangalore base, so if your headcount changes after booking we can usually move you between categories without restarting the process — which matters more than usual on this route, since the vehicle size determines which ghat you take.

•             Mini bus — 12 to 24 seater, AC and non-AC, the core vehicle for this route

•             Tempo traveller — 8 to 18 seater, for smaller groups on the same corridor

•             Force Urbania — 13 to 17 seater luxury van

•             Bus — 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches, better suited to the Charmadi and Karkala approach than to Agumbe

•             Cars — 4 to 7 seater, from Etios, Dzire, Innova and Commuter through Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross and Fortuner, up to Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, Mercedes-Benz S Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost

Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our vehicles are seated configuration with push-back seats. On this route that is not a limitation, because the drive is done in daylight and we would not take either Agumbe or Charmadi after dark in any case.

Billing Details — What Is Included and What Is Extra

We quote in writing before you book and the quote itemises everything, so nothing appears at trip end that you have not already approved. A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms the booking.

Included in the Quoted Fare

•             Base fare and fuel charges

•             Driver allowance

Not Included — Billed Separately at Actuals

•             Toll charges and parking fees

•             Interstate tax, where the itinerary crosses a state border

•             Additional driver bata after 9:45 PM

•             GST as applicable

•             Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage

Bangalore to Varanga stays within Karnataka throughout, so no interstate permit or border tax applies on either route. Extend the itinerary into Kerala, Goa or Tamil Nadu and permit charges apply, shown as separate line items in the quote.

The garage-to-garage basis is standard across the organised group transport industry in Bangalore. The meter starts when the vehicle leaves our garage for your pickup point and stops when it returns. This is built into the written quote, so the figure you approve is the figure you pay.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. Vehicle insurance and full statutory driver and vehicle compliance are maintained across the fleet.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Varanga Minibus

The bangalore to varanga distance is approximately 385 kilometres on the Sringeri and Agumbe route, or around 395 kilometres via Charmadi Ghat and Karkala. Either way, allow 9 to 10 hours including breakfast, lunch and the ghat descent. This is a longer day than most Karnataka routes, so we ask for a 4:30 AM to 5:00 AM departure from Bangalore. That timing also puts you at Kere Basadi during the afternoon session rather than during its midday closure.

Vehicle size decides it, and we confirm the route in the written quote before you pay. Mini buses of 12, 14 and 17 seats go via Sringeri and Agumbe, which is the more scenic road and puts Sringeri and the Agumbe sunset point on your itinerary. Agumbe Ghat has fourteen hairpin bends in a narrow forest corridor, so 20 and 24 seaters go via Charmadi Ghat, Ujire and Karkala instead — around ten kilometres longer, less dramatic, but a considerably more comfortable road for a larger vehicle. If you have a strong preference either way, tell us at enquiry stage and we will size the vehicle to suit.

Kere Basadi is generally open from about 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM with a break from roughly 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM, though village timings can vary and it is worth having your driver confirm on the day. The temple stands in the middle of a lake and is reached only by a small boat that visitors row across themselves — there is no causeway. Plan to arrive either mid-morning or after 3:30 PM, and allow an hour at the site. Photography is popular here; the afternoon light on the water is better than the morning.

Pricing starts from around Rs 25,240. The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Charged separately at actuals are toll and parking, interstate tax where the itinerary crosses a state border, additional driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and every charge appears as a line item in the written quote you receive within 2 hours.

Honestly, no — and we would rather say so than have a group drive nine hours for a half-day visit. Varanga is three Basadis and a lake, and it is best treated as one stop on a circuit. Karkala is 25 kilometres away, Agumbe about 30, Udupi 40 and Sringeri 65. Most of our bookings on this corridor are three to five day itineraries taking in Varanga, Karkala, Agumbe and the coast, or pairing Varanga with Sringeri and Horanadu. Share your dates and we will build the day-wise plan alongside the quote.

No. Both routes stay entirely within Karnataka, so no interstate permit or border tax applies. If you extend the trip into Kerala for Wayanad or Guruvayur, or into Goa, permits are required and billed at actuals as separate line items. We arrange all permit documentation before departure in those cases, so nothing is left for you to handle at a checkpoint.

A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and guarantees the specific mini bus variant on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. The balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance. For Dasara, Diwali, New Year and long weekends, book as far ahead as you can — this is a popular corridor with photography and heritage groups in the post-monsoon months.

October to January is the best window overall: the lake is full, the lilies are out, the Ghats are green after the monsoon and both ghat roads are open. February to May is dry and increasingly hot on the coastal side, so an AC vehicle is worth the upgrade. June to September brings extremely heavy rain to this part of the Ghats — Agumbe records some of the highest rainfall in India — and while the landscape is at its most dramatic, landslide closures are common and the Kudlu Theertha trail is not advisable.

Varanga village has almost no commercial food options, so plan meals around Hebri, nine kilometres away, which has a good local reputation. Sringeri is the practical lunch halt on the outbound leg. For accommodation, the Jain Math at Varanga maintains a guest house for pilgrims, while Karkala, Hebri, Agumbe and Udupi all have options that suit a group of twelve to twenty-four. We can suggest halts to fit your itinerary once you share the dates and group size.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our vehicles are seated configuration with push-back seats. On this route it makes no practical difference, since the drive is completed in daylight and neither Agumbe nor Charmadi should be taken after dark. On insurance: we do not provide passenger insurance cover, and passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if they wish to be covered. All vehicles carry valid insurance and full statutory compliance, and every driver is verified with a commercial licence and route experience, but personal passenger cover is not part of the booking. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com. Our mini bus booking online and WhatsApp enquiry lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
