Places to Visit in Coorg
Abbey Falls

Talacauvery
Talacauvery, at 1,276 metres on Brahmagiri hill, is the origin of the Cauvery and a major pilgrimage site. Around 250 steps lead to a summit viewpoint that on a clear morning looks across successive Western Ghats ranges. Eight kilometres below, Bhagamandala marks the river confluence with its Kerala-style temple complex. Plan it as a dry-weather morning run.
Dubare Elephant Camp
A Forest Department camp on the Cauvery near Kushalnagar. Plan for the morning session, when visitors can watch and, subject to the day's schedule, join in feeding and bathing the elephants in the river. Arrive by 9 am, as the interaction window closes late morning. This is the stop that consistently wins over school and family groups.
Raja's Seat
A terraced garden on the western edge of town where the Kodava kings watched the sunset, and still the best free viewpoint in the district. The land falls into layered valleys that fill with mist by evening. Go around 5:15 pm and expect company at weekends. There is a toy train and musical fountain for families.
Golden Temple
The Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery in Bylakuppe — popularly known as the Golden Temple — is one of the largest Nyingma teaching centres outside Tibet and a visual masterpiece. Established in 1963 by Tibetan refugees who settled in Bylakuppe, the monastery complex is home to towering golden statues of Lord Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, and Amitayus, surrounded by intricate Tibetan murals and colourful prayer flags. The entire complex has a deeply meditative and awe-inspiring atmosphere that attracts visitors from across the world regardless of religious background. The monastery town of Bylakuppe is also worth exploring for its Tibetan markets selling handmade jewellery, traditional clothing, and delicious momos. Entry is free. The monastery is located about 35 km from Madikeri and is ideally visited on the way to or from Coorg.
Iruppu Falls
Iruppu Falls, also known as Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, is one of the most sacred and scenic waterfalls in Coorg. Located within the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary near the Kerala border, the falls are fed by the Lakshmana Tirtha River and drop approximately 60 metres into a rocky pool below. The surrounding sanctuary is home to elephants, leopards, gaur, and a variety of bird species, making the trek to the falls an exciting wildlife experience as well. The Rameshwara Temple adjacent to the falls holds immense religious significance and draws large crowds during the Shivaratri festival. A well-marked forest trail leads from the parking area to the falls through dense evergreen forest. The entire experience — from the forest drive to the sight of the cascading water against lush green backdrop — is deeply refreshing and memorable.
Nagarhole National Park
Nagarhole National Park, officially known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, is one of India's premier tiger reserves and a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Located on the northwestern edge of Coorg, the park spans over 640 square kilometres of dense deciduous and semi-evergreen forests teeming with wildlife. Safari visitors can spot tigers, leopards, wild elephants, Indian gaur, dholes, sambar deer, and an extraordinary variety of birds including the Indian grey hornbill and the crested serpent eagle. Jeep safaris and boat rides along the Kabini River backwaters are the most popular ways to explore the park. The golden light of dawn safaris offers the best wildlife sightings. Nagarhole is best visited between October and May. A trip to Coorg is incomplete without a morning or evening safari in this spectacular national park.
Madikeri Fort
The fort dates from the late seventeenth century, was rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan and now holds a small museum. Ten minutes away, the 1820 Omkareshwara temple blends Kerala, Islamic and Gothic elements around a tank full of fish. Both are compact, making them the sensible fillers when weather closes in on the viewpoints.
Chelavara Falls
Chelavara Falls is a hidden gem in Coorg that remains relatively undiscovered compared to the more popular Abbey Falls and Iruppu Falls. Located near Kakkabe village in the southern part of Kodagu, the waterfall drops about 25 metres over a series of rocky ledges surrounded by thick riparian forest. The trek to the falls passes through coffee and pepper plantations, adding a fragrant, sensory layer to the experience. Unlike busier tourist spots, Chelavara offers a quiet, peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for travellers seeking solitude in nature. The water is crystal clear and cool, ideal for a refreshing dip during summer months. The approach road to Chelavara is narrow and best navigated in a smaller vehicle or on foot. This is an ideal destination for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers who enjoy off-the-beaten-path experiences in the hills.
Coffee Plantation Estate Tour
A coffee plantation tour is not just an activity in Coorg — it is an essential cultural experience that defines the region. Kodagu produces about 30% of India's total coffee output, and the district is blanketed with sprawling Arabica and Robusta estates interspersed with silver oak, orange groves, pepper vines, and cardamom shrubs. Many homestays and resorts in Coorg offer guided plantation walks where guests learn about the coffee-growing process — from seed to cup — including planting, harvesting, pulping, drying, and roasting. Channapatna is a charming small town that is world-famous for its handcrafted lacquerware wooden toys — a tradition that dates back over 200 years. If you are travelling with children or looking for unique, eco-friendly souvenirs, this is the perfect spot to stop for 20 to 30 minutes and browse the roadside toy shops. The toys here are made from ivory wood (aale mara) and natural vegetable dyes, earning Channapatna a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Beyond toys, the town also has a clean roadside food court with decent South Indian meals and fresh coconut water stalls. The road from Channapatna onwards gets more scenic as you approach Maddur and Mandya, with sugarcane fields lining both sides of the highway and the pleasant Karnataka air carrying a rural freshness that city life rarely offers.

Nearby Bylakuppe is one of the largest Tibetan settlements outside Tibet and is home to the stunning Namdroling Monastery, popularly called the "Golden Temple." The monastery's golden spires and colourful Buddhist murals are breathtaking and worth a short detour. Kushalnagar town has several good restaurants, juice corners, and a well-stocked supermarket where you can pick up essentials for your Coorg stay. The scenic Harangi Dam is also just a few kilometres from here. ● Multi-day Coorg and outstation hire: minimum 7 days notice for a full refund.
● Peak dates: New Year, Diwali and long weekends need 48 hours notice for a full refund.
● Force majeure: bandhs, road closures or Kodagu ghat landslides — 100 per cent refunded within 2 working days regardless of notice.
● Modifications: date changes, upgrades and route additions with over 24 hours notice are accommodated at no penalty.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passengers insurance by the company. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required under Indian motor law, drivers are police verified and PSV licensed, and the fleet is GPS tracked. Groups wanting personal accident or travel cover should arrange it separately.
October to March is the most comfortable window, with clear roads and good ghat visibility, while September to December gives the strongest waterfall flow. The June to August monsoon is spectacularly green but brings reduced visibility and occasional landslide closures, so we build in extra buffer. Book peak weekends such as Dasara and New Year two to three weeks ahead.
