Sri Vadiraja Mutt and Brindavana
The main reason most visitors come. Sri Vadiraja Tirtha, the sixteenth-century Madhva saint, scholar and poet, spent his final years at Sode, and his Brindavana here is revered by followers across South India. The mutt is one of the Ashta Mathas of Udupi, and its pontiffs take part in the rotating Paryaya worship at the Udupi Sri Krishna temple. Trivikrama Temple

A separate shrine to Bhutaraja stands nearby, and devotees offer prayers there for protection and the removal of obstacles.
Dhavala Ganga
The sacred pond beside the mutt, Dhavala Ganga, is where pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip before darshan. Its still water, surrounded by stone steps and old trees, is one of the most photographed spots at Sode, especially in the soft light of early morning when the mist hangs low over the forest.
Swarnavalli Mutt
A short distance away, the Swarnavalli Mahasamsthana is an ancient Advaita mutt associated with the Smarta tradition and with the Havyaka Brahmin community of the region. Set by the Shalmala river among arecanut gardens, it is known for its Vedic learning, its temple and its tranquil campus. Visitors of all traditions are welcome, and its presence is a large part of why Sonda is called the land of three mutts.
Sonda Jain Mutt
The third of Sonda's mutts belongs to the Digambara Jain tradition and is associated with the Bhattakalanka lineage of scholar-monks. The basadi is simple and serene, with carved Tirthankara images, and it reflects the long history of Jainism in coastal and Malnad Karnataka. It is a quick but meaningful stop for anyone interested in the religious history of the region.
Sonda Fort Ruins
Scattered through the forest near the village are the remains of the fort and palace of the Sonda Nayakas, who ruled from the sixteenth century until the kingdom was taken over in the late eighteenth century. Stone gateways, walls and fragments of structures lie half hidden among the trees. The site is unrestored and atmospheric, best explored with a local guide or your driver's directions.
Shivaganga Falls
Around ten kilometres from Sode, the Shalmala river drops about 74 metres into a narrow, forested gorge at Shivaganga Falls. A viewpoint above the falls looks out across the valley, and between July and November the water is at full force. It is the natural nature stop on a Sonda trip and far quieter than the better-known falls of the district.
Sahasralinga
Upstream on the same Shalmala river, Sahasralinga is a stretch of riverbed carved with hundreds of lingas, many with Nandi figures before them, a work traditionally credited to the Sonda king Sadashivaraya around the turn of the eighteenth century. It ties directly to Sonda's royal history, and the carvings are most visible once the monsoon flow drops.

A short detour from the highway leads to several famous dosa houses. For a pilgrim group travelling on a strict vegetarian diet, it is one of the most reliable food stops on the whole route. Arecanut Capital and Home of Goddess Marikamba
The road climbs gently from paddy fields into forest, and the air cools noticeably. Sirsi is the commercial centre of the Malnad region and one of the biggest arecanut markets in the country. Groups arriving in the afternoon often stop for Marikamba darshan here before continuing. Sirsi also has the widest choice of hotels and vegetarian restaurants in the area, which is why many pilgrims base themselves here. Elapsed time: about 7 hours 30 minutes.
The Land of Three Mutts and Seat of the Sonda Nayakas
A turn off the main road leads into Sonda, where the Vadiraja Mutt, the Swarnavalli Mutt and the Jain Mutt stand within a short distance of each other, three traditions sharing one small forest village.
