Kalasa and the Kalaseshwara Temple
Ten kilometres from Horanadu on the same river, Kalasa is an old temple town counted among the Pancha Kshetras of this region, with the Kalaseshwara temple standing above the Bhadra and a set of theerthams associated with Agastya. Ambatheertha, a short distance out, is a pool on the river in forest where the water is held to be sacred and where the setting does most of the work. Visit Kalasa in the morning; the temple is quiet by comparison with Horanadu and the walk down to the river is worth the time.
Kudremukh National Park
Around thirty kilometres west, Kudremukh covers a large area of shola forest and rolling grassland in the Western Ghats, named for a peak whose profile is said to resemble a horse face. The trek to the summit is one of the better known in Karnataka - a demanding day of around twenty kilometres return through grassland, with permits and a mandatory guide arranged through the forest department at Mullodi or the range office. Visit between October and February. Permits are limited, arrangements change, and the trek is not a casual undertaking; confirm directly with the department before planning around it.
Hanuman Gundi and Kadambi Falls
Hanuman Gundi, also called Soothanabbi, lies inside Kudremukh park around twenty-five kilometres from Horanadu - a fall of some hundred feet dropping into a natural rock pool, reached by a flight of around four hundred steps down through forest. Kadambi Falls is closer to the road and needs no walking at all. Visit between July and December when there is water; Hanuman Gundi has an entry charge and set timings through the forest department, and the steps are steep and slippery after rain, so footwear matters.
Sringeri
Fifty kilometres from Horanadu and the third point of the standard circuit. Sringeri is the first of the four mathas Adi Shankara established and the seat of the Sharada Peetham, with an unbroken line of acharyas since the eighth century - and alongside the Sharadamba shrine stands the Vidyashankara temple, whose twelve pillars are positioned so that the sun falls on each in the order of the zodiac months. The Bhadra and the Malnad

Beyond it the highway opens up. Kunigal has one of the oldest stud farms in India; Yediyur, twenty-five kilometres on, has a lakeside Siddhalingeshwara temple and the best breakfast cluster on this road, which is worth using properly since options thin later. Channarayapatna is the Shravanabelagola junction, and Hassan is the base of the Hoysala circuit.
Chikmagalur
Coffee Cradle of India
Belur comes up thirty-five kilometres beyond Hassan and is the best short stop on this route - the Chennakeshava temple, commissioned in 1117 and worked on for over a century, carries bracket figures among the finest sculpture in India, and it was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2023. Ninety minutes covers it properly. Chikmagalur follows and the country changes - the Baba Budan hills rise to the north and coffee replaces everything else. Indian coffee began on that hill, where Baba Budan is said to have planted seven seeds carried back from Yemen. Beyond Chikmagalur the road turns west into the Malnad proper and the driving changes with it.
Kalasa
Temple Town on the Bhadra
A hundred and ten kilometres west through the heart of the Malnad, and this is where the average speed drops. The road winds continuously through estate and forest, climbing and dropping, with coffee under shade trees on both sides and very little open ground. Mudigere is a working coffee town; Kottigehara, beyond it, is where the Charmadi ghat road turns west toward Mangalore down one of the more dramatic descents in Karnataka. Kalasa sits on the Bhadra with the Kalaseshwara temple above the river, one of the Pancha Kshetras of this region and a quiet place by comparison with what follows. It has more accommodation than Horanadu and is where a good number of groups actually stay.
Horanadu
Annadana Kshetra of the Malnad
Ten kilometres of winding road through estate country along the Bhadra, and it takes twenty minutes rather than the ten the distance suggests. The hills close in and the last stretch runs through forest and coffee with the river below. Horanadu is very small - the temple complex is most of it, with dining halls, accommodation blocks and a handful of shops around the gate. That scale is part of the character: this is a temple town in the literal sense rather than a town with a temple in it. Accommodation is largely run by the trust and booked directly with them. For groups attempting the Kudremukh trek, the forest department operates its own arrangements and those are worth checking directly.

Kudremukh is around thirty kilometres west and the summit trek is a demanding day of roughly twenty kilometres return through grassland, with permits and a mandatory guide arranged through the forest department at the range office. Numbers are limited and arrangements change, so confirm directly with the department rather than assuming. October to February is the window. It adds a full day to the circuit and it is not a casual add-on.
September to March. The southwest monsoon from June to August brings very heavy rain to this part of the Ghats, which makes the last eighty kilometres slow and occasionally troublesome - though the Malnad is at its most beautiful then and the falls are running. September to November is the ideal window: everything green after the rains, roads dried out, and the temple less crowded than in the festival season.
