Tiruvarur Thyagaraja Temple
Twenty-five kilometres north, this is a very large Shiva complex with a substantial prakaram and the Kamalalayam tank, and it holds the temple chariot that is the largest in Asia at around ninety-six tonnes. The Azhi Ther festival, when it is drawn through the streets by thousands of people, is among the more extraordinary sights in Tamil Nadu. Outside the festival the chariot stands in its shed and is worth seeing simply for the scale of it. Visit in the morning and allow two hours for the temple and the chariot together.
Vaduvur Bird Sanctuary
Around twenty-five kilometres from Mannargudi, Vaduvur is a large irrigation tank that becomes a significant heronry and wintering ground - painted storks, open-billed storks, spoonbills, ibises, pelicans, cormorants and darters nest and roost here in numbers, with the surrounding trees full of nests in season. There is a watchtower. Visit at dawn between November and February, which is when the birds are in and the light is best. It is entirely unvisited by comparison with the temples and it is among the better wetland sites in the delta.
Muthupet Mangroves
Around forty kilometres south-east where the Cauvery distributaries meet the sea, Muthupet holds one of the larger mangrove forests on the east coast - a lagoon and a network of creeks running out to a sandbar, with boat trips through the channels arranged by the forest department and local operators. It is quieter and considerably less developed than Pichavaram to the north, which some visitors prefer. Visit in the morning between November and February. Boat operation depends on water conditions and is weather-dependent, so confirm on the day rather than building a fixed schedule around it.
Thirukkannapuram and the Delta Temples
Thirukkannapuram, around thirty kilometres away, is one of the hundred and eight Divya Desams and holds the Neelamega Perumal temple, a substantial complex that Vaishnavite pilgrims include with Mannargudi on a delta circuit. The surrounding country is dense with temples of real antiquity - Thirunallar, Thiruvarur, Thirukkuvalai and others within an hour, several of them Padal Petra Sthalams or Divya Desams. Point Calimere
Around sixty kilometres south, at the point where the coast turns west, Point Calimere is a Ramsar-listed wetland of tidal flats, saltpans and dry evergreen forest, and greater flamingos arrive here in very large numbers between November and February alongside pelicans, storks and waders. Blackbuck and spotted deer are in the forest. Visit at dawn in the winter months; outside that window the birds are largely gone. It combines with Muthupet into a full day of coast and wetland, which is a genuinely different trip from the temple circuit and a good counterweight to it.

Tiruvarur is also the birthplace of three of the four composers of the Carnatic trinity, which for anyone interested in the music makes it a place worth standing in.

We would recommend it. Mannargudi on its own is a long drive for one temple, however substantial that temple is. Thanjavur is forty kilometres north-west with the Big Temple and the three UNESCO Chola sites in reach, Kumbakonam is sixty north with the Navagraha circuit, and Tiruvarur is twenty-five. Three or four days with the vehicle retained covers the district properly, which is how we build most bookings that start with an enquiry about Mannargudi.
More than most visitors expect. Vaduvur, twenty-five kilometres away, is a large tank that becomes a significant heronry between November and February - painted storks, spoonbills, ibises and pelicans nesting in numbers, with a watchtower and almost no visitors. Muthupet has mangrove channels forty kilometres south-east with boat trips. Point Calimere, sixty kilometres on, is a Ramsar wetland where greater flamingos winter. Together they make a genuinely different two days.
November to February. The Cauvery delta from April to June is severe, with humidity on top of the heat, and it matters here because the temple courtyards are open stone walked barefoot. The same window is also when the wetlands at Vaduvur, Muthupet and Point Calimere are at their best. The Panguni Brahmotsavam falls in March or April and the Azhi Ther at Tiruvarur in its own season - both are worth planning around if a festival is your reason for coming.
