Several other basadis are scattered around the village, including the Guddada Basadi on the hill, and a group of Santara-period remains. A bridge has been under construction to replace it and access arrangements have been changing, so confirm the current position before planning a day around either. Kollur Mookambika and Kodachadri
Kollur, around eighty kilometres west across the Ghats, holds the Mookambika temple - one of the most visited Devi shrines in South India and a major draw for Kerala pilgrims in particular. Above it rises Kodachadri at around 1,343 metres, a peak in the Mookambika reserve with a well-known trek and a jeep track, associated with Adi Shankara. Visit Kollur as a day from Humcha; Kodachadri needs its own day and the trek runs through forest department territory with permits and arrangements that change, so confirm before planning around it.
Ikkeri, Keladi and Jog Falls
Ikkeri and Keladi, around sixty kilometres north near Sagara, were the successive capitals of the Keladi Nayakas, and the Aghoreshwara temple at Ikkeri is a substantial and unusual building - a late Vijayanagara style with elements that belong to nothing else. Arsikere is a substantial railway junction and coconut trading town, and it holds something most travellers drive past without knowing - a thirteenth-century Hoysala Ishvara temple with a sixteen-pointed star mandapa that is among the more architecturally inventive of the smaller Hoysala buildings. Twenty minutes off the road, and worth it. Kadur and Birur follow, junction towns where the Chikmagalur and Shivamogga roads divide, and then Tarikere, which is the turn for the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and reservoir. The country here is transitional - still plateau, but the Ghats are visible to the west and the vegetation is thickening.
Shivamogga
Gateway to the Malnad
Seventy kilometres north-west on good road as the landscape turns properly Malnad - areca, paddy and forest, with the Ghats closer and the light different. Shivamogga sits on the Tunga and is the district town from which this entire region is administered and reached. It is the natural lunch halt and the last place with a full range of services before the hill roads. For groups extending the trip, Shivamogga is also the practical base for Jog, Sagara and the Sharavathi country - a good number of our Humcha bookings actually stay here rather than at Humcha, which has very limited accommodation.

Padmavati Kshetra of Karnataka
Seventy kilometres west and the character changes completely. The road narrows and winds through areca gardens and forest, climbing gently into the Malnad proper, and the pace drops well below what the distance suggests - budget an hour and a half rather than an hour. Hosanagara is the taluk town, in the country of the Sharavathi backwaters. Humcha is small: the temple, the math, the basadis and a village around them, with the hills close on every side. It has been a Jain settlement continuously since the Santaras founded it around the eighth century, which is a long time for a place this size to have held its character. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. A 6:00 AM departure puts most travellers in Humcha by around 2:30 PM, in time for the evening session at the temple.

We would generally build the itinerary that way rather than trying to base at Humcha, and during the annual rathotsava it is the only workable arrangement.

Sigandur and the Sharavathi backwaters are forty kilometres away, Ikkeri and Keladi with the Keladi Nayaka temples sixty, Jog Falls ninety, and Kollur Mookambika eighty west across the Ghats with Kodachadri above it. Agumbe and Sringeri are to the south. Three or four days with the vehicle retained covers a sensible selection - Humcha itself is a half day.
Traditionally by ferry - a barge across the Sharavathi backwaters carrying vehicles and people, which is a large part of the experience of going. A bridge has been under construction to replace the crossing and access arrangements have been changing, so confirm the current position before planning a day around it. Our drivers check locally before setting out. Either way the drive through the Sharavathi valley is worth as much as the temple at the end of it.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For groups attempting the Kodachadri trek or the Sigandur crossing, the operators and the forest department run their own arrangements and those are worth checking directly.
September to March for comfort. The southwest monsoon from June to August brings very heavy rain to this part of the Malnad and the roads west of Shivamogga slow considerably - but it is also when Jog Falls is at its most spectacular, which is a genuine trade-off on this route. If Jog is the reason for the trip, July to September; if the temples and the driving are, September to March.
