Places to Visit in Thekkady

Periyar Lake and the Tiger Reserve
The lake was created in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar dam, drowning a valley of forest, and the standing dead trees in the shallows are its signature image. The reserve around it covers around nine hundred square kilometres of the Cardamom Hills and holds elephant, gaur, sambar, wild dog and tiger, though the last is rarely seen. The boat trip takes you along the shoreline where animals come down to drink. Visit on the earliest trip you can get. Sightings are never guaranteed and anyone promising them is selling something, but elephant and gaur at the water are common enough on a morning boat.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
The first four hours are the fastest of the journey, on six-lane NH 44. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Electronic City before 5:30 AM, because arriving at Thekkady in the afternoon rather than the evening is what makes the next morning boat possible. The Thoppur ghat between Dharmapuri and Salem is the first of two gradients on this route - four-laned but steep enough that loaded trucks crawl - and our drivers hold back rather than joining in. Salem has the best highway restaurants on the corridor and is the natural breakfast halt.

Dindigul
Lock City of India
Fast, flat four-lane highway south through the Kongu plains, and the easiest driving of the day. Namakkal has the eighteen-foot monolithic Anjaneyar at the base of its rock fort. Karur follows on the Amaravathi, the home textile capital. Dindigul is where the route leaves the north-south corridor and turns west toward the hills, and it lands almost exactly at lunch on an early departure - which is convenient, because the Thalappakatti biryani that originated here is the most famous food stop on this highway. Beyond Dindigul the Western Ghats begin to appear properly on the horizon for the first time.

Cumbum
Grape Valley of South India
The road runs west through Batlagundu, where the Kodaikanal road branches north, and into Theni district at the foot of the Ghats. The mountains are close now and the country changes - irrigated, green, and hemmed in by hills on the western side. Bodinayakkanur lies a short way west of Theni and is where most of the Indian cardamom crop is auctioned; the trade defines the town. The Cumbum valley beyond is grape country. Panneer Thratchai grapes grown on this valley floor carry a GI tag and the vineyards run along the road under the wall of the Ghats, which is an unexpected landscape to find in Tamil Nadu. It is worth slowing for, and the roadside grapes in season are worth stopping for.
Thekkady
Lake in the Cardamom Hills
The last thirty kilometres are the climb. The road leaves the valley floor and ascends through forest into the Cardamom Hills, and the temperature drops perceptibly as it goes - by the top the air is cool and smells of spice, which is not a figure of speech in this particular place. The Kerala border comes at Kumily and the interstate permit is presented there, arranged by us in advance. Kumily is the town: a main street of spice shops, homestays and small hotels, with plantations running up the slopes behind it. Thekkady, four kilometres further, is the reserve entrance and the boat landing rather than a settlement. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage - and on a wildlife booking will take you to the ticket counter first if that is what the next morning requires. A 5:00 AM departure puts most travellers in Kumily by around 4:00 PM.

Cab Packages for Every Traveller
Every quotation is built around what you actually need rather than a fixed menu. The four tiers below describe how we typically structure car booking enquiries on this corridor.
Munnar and Thekkady Package
The most common Kerala hill itinerary from Bangalore and the one we build most often. The two sit around four hours apart through genuinely fine hill country, and together they give you tea estates and a tiger reserve in one trip - typically two nights at each, with the drive between them as a half day. Innova and Innova Crysta are the usual choice. Adding Alleppey or Kochi at the end turns it into a full Kerala circuit of six or seven days, which is the shape a good number of our longer bookings take.
Family and Wildlife Cab Package
For families coming for Periyar itself. The planning is entirely around the boat: an afternoon arrival so the ticketing step can be taken the day before, an early trip the following morning, and ideally two nights so a full first boat does not cost you the experience. We also flag the alternatives - bamboo rafting and the guided walks book separately and take small numbers, so a full boat is not a lost day. Innova and Innova Crysta are usual, with tempo travellers for larger groups, and child seats can be arranged with notice.
Two-Day Journey Package
Ten to eleven hours of driving makes the outbound day long, and there are two gradients on it - Thoppur early and the Kumily ghat at the end. Breaking at Madurai or Dindigul turns it into two comfortable halves and, in the Madurai case, adds the Meenakshi Amman Temple. For a group with elderly travellers, or where the boat matters, arriving rested and in daylight is worth the extra night. The Kumily ghat is a straightforward climb but not one to be doing for the first time after dark.
Premium and Luxury Cab Package
For senior family groups, guest hosting and travellers who want a long drive with a ghat at the end to be comfortable. This tier covers our premium car rentals in bangalore range and the innova hycross rent bangalore fleet, alongside our luxury car rental bangalore options. On a Munnar and Thekkady circuit the vehicle covers a great deal of hill road across several days, and suspension and ride quality are felt rather more than on a straight highway run.
Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment
Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for the Bangalore to Thekkady corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged, and everything inside it is stated before you confirm.

Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel cover where required. Vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law.
Three points are specific to this route. First, boat tickets, reserve entry, bamboo rafting and all forest department programmes are booked by you with the department and paid on site - we arrange transport and time the day around what you have secured, and no operator can obtain a boat ticket that the department has not released. Second, the Kerala interstate permit applies at the Kumily border and is quoted as a separate line at actual. Third, on a Munnar and Thekkady circuit the hill running between and around the two is substantial, and our package quotes carry a stated allowance for it.

How to Book a Car for Rent in Bangalore — Step-by-Step
Booking a Car for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps:
STEP1 | Contact Tejas Travels Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Share your travel date, Bangalore pickup location (area or landmark — Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, hotel name, tech park), destination or full itinerary, number of passengers, and preferred vehicle. For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number — the driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically. For luxury vehicles (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Rolls-Royce), also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding, VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire. |
STEP2 | Receive Your Written Quote Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email. The quote clearly itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate (Rs/km or flat package), driver allowance (Rs 400-1,000/day depending on vehicle class), applicable toll estimates, and any interstate permit if applicable (Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati). No verbal-only prices — everything in writing before you confirm. For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage. If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time. |
STEP3 | Confirm Your Booking & Pay Advance Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone. A 15-20% advance payment confirms the booking. Payment: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link. Advance receipt within 30 minutes. Confirmation includes: driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location, and full billing breakdown — all in writing. For luxury vehicles (Rolls-Royce Ghost, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class), advance may be higher due to limited fleet and Bangalore peak-date demand (wedding season November-February, New Year). |
STEP4 | Your Driver Arrives Early Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at your confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure. For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate. The vehicle is clean, sanitized, fuelled, and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire. The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy. During the trip, the driver handles all routing, toll payments, and Bangalore traffic navigation. At trip end, balance payment is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional km or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate. |
Quick Booking for Hire: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your vehicle preference, Bangalore pickup location, destination, and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.

What Our Customers Say About Our Cab Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Thekkady Cab
The bangalore to thekkady distance is around 580 km via NH 44 through Salem, Karur and Dindigul, then west through Theni and the Cumbum valley to Kumily, with reported figures between 560 km and 600 km. A cab takes 10 to 11 hours with two proper halts. There are two gradients - the Thoppur ghat early on and the thirty-kilometre climb from the Cumbum valley at the end.
The Kerala forest department runs a fixed number of scheduled boat trips a day with set capacity, and in season demand exceeds supply. Tickets are for specific trips, and a full trip is full - there is no standby. The early trips see the most wildlife and go first. Booking arrangements have shifted between online allocation and counter sales more than once, so check the current position with the forest department close to your travel date rather than relying on any third-party page, including this one.
No, and we would be wary of anyone who says they can. The tickets are released by the forest department through their own channels and no transport operator has access to allocation beyond that. What we do is get you to Thekkady in the afternoon so the booking step can be taken the day before, take you to the counter or landing at the right time, and build the day around the trip you have secured. That is the honest extent of it.
It is not a lost day. The reserve runs bamboo rafting, guided jungle walks, border hiking and night patrols, all with strictly limited numbers and booked independently of the boat - and several visitors find them a considerably better experience, since you are in the forest rather than looking at it from the water. Several are led by guides from local tribal communities. This is also the argument for giving Thekkady two nights rather than one.
A sedan starts at Rs 14,000 for a one-way drop and Rs 26,000 for a two-day journey with an overnight. Munnar and Thekkady combined itineraries and larger vehicles are quoted on plan and group size. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate, the Kerala interstate permit and GST separately, and circuit bookings carry a stated allowance for hill running.
A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your dates. The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation includes the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time and the full billing breakdown in writing. For the December to January peak and for long weekends, a higher advance may be requested.
Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax and permit charges, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. Boat tickets, reserve entry, bamboo rafting and all forest department programmes are booked and paid by you directly. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and on a circuit the hill running is part of that total.
A small advance of around 20 percent of the total fare is typically collected at the time of booking to secure the vehicle and driver allocation, with the remaining balance payable at
the end of the trip either in cash directly to the driver or online via a payment link.
Tejas Travels maintains a fair, transparent, and tiered cancellation policy. All terms communicated in writing at booking confirmation.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For bamboo rafting, trekking and the other forest programmes, the department operates its own arrangements and those are worth checking with them directly.
Yes, and it is the most common Kerala hill itinerary from Bangalore. The two are around four hours apart through some of the better hill country in the state, and two nights at each gives you a tiger reserve and the tea estates in one trip. Adding Alleppey or Kochi at the end makes a full Kerala circuit of six or seven days. Tell us at the quotation stage so the kilometres and the hill running are in the plan rather than surfacing at settlement.
October to March for comfort, with September to November often best for wildlife as the forest thins slightly after the rains. December and January are the peak and the town is busy. The southwest monsoon from June brings heavy rain to these hills - the reserve stays open and the forest is at its most spectacular, but boat trips and walks are affected by the weather and the leeches are real. April and May are warm even at this altitude but perfectly workable.
