The Kapila and the Ghats
The Kapila - the Kabini - runs below the temple and the ghats are used for the ritual bath before darshan, as at the great river shrines. The river rises in Wayanad and joins the Cauvery at Tirumakudalu Narasipura downstream, which is itself a confluence site of some significance. Visit at first light when the ghats are busy and the light is on the water. Flow varies considerably with the season and with releases from the Kabini dam upstream, so follow local direction rather than assuming.
Rasabale and the Tooth Powder
Two things Nanjangud is known for beyond the temple, and both are genuine. Nanjangud rasabale is a banana variety with a GI tag - short, thin-skinned, intensely aromatic and quite unlike a commercial banana - grown in a small area around the town and increasingly scarce, which is why finding it is a minor achievement. And Nanjangud tooth powder has been made here since the nineteenth century and still commands a following that has outlasted a good deal of multinational marketing. Buy both in the town rather than assuming you will find them elsewhere.
Suttur Math
Around ten kilometres from Nanjangud on the Kapila, Suttur is the seat of a Veerashaiva monastic institution going back to the eleventh century, running a large educational network across Karnataka alongside its religious function. The annual Suttur jatra in January or February draws very large numbers over several days, with a cattle fair, cultural programmes and mass feeding. Visit outside the jatra for a quiet riverside math, or during it for one of the larger rural gatherings in the state - and book well ahead if the latter.
Mysore
Twenty-three kilometres north and the obvious pairing. The Amba Vilas palace, Chamundi Hills with the Nandi on the ascent, St Philomena, the Devaraja market and Brindavan Gardens beyond - a full day easily, and the palace illumination on Sunday evenings and public holidays is worth timing for. Visit Mysore on the same trip as a matter of course; a great many of our Nanjangud bookings are actually Mysore trips with the temple added, and the two together make a comfortable two-day itinerary.
Talakadu, Bandipur and Kabini
Three quite different extensions. Talakadu, around forty kilometres east on the Cauvery, is the buried town where temples emerge from and disappear under sand dunes - one of the stranger sites in Karnataka. Bandipur is sixty kilometres south with forest department safaris and a reliable elephant population. Kabini, on the reservoir west of it, is the best-known wildlife destination in the state. Visit any as a second day; all three are closer to Nanjangud than to Bangalore and the town works well as a staging point.

Dakshina Kashi of Karnataka
Twenty-three kilometres south of Mysore on good road through sugarcane and paddy, with the Kapila appearing on the approach. Suttur lies off this road, seat of a Veerashaiva math going back to the eleventh century with a large educational network and an annual jatra that fills the riverside. Nanjangud is a compact temple town on the river, and the gopuram is visible above the rooftops from some distance out. The compound is very large - among the biggest in Karnataka - with the ghats below it and the market streets around. Beyond that, Talakadu with its buried temples in the sand is forty kilometres east, Suttur math ten kilometres away, Bandipur sixty south with forest department safaris, and Kabini west of it. Nanjangud sits at the junction of the Mysore, Ooty and Chamarajanagar roads, so it works well as a staging point for a longer southern trip rather than only as a destination.
