Kodachadri and the Sarvajna Peetha
The peak above Kollur, at around 1,343 metres in the Mookambika sanctuary, with the small stone Sarvajna Peetha at the summit associated with Adi Shankara and the Chitramoola cave below it. The views west toward the sea on a clear evening are among the best in the Ghats. Access is by a ten-kilometre trek or by local jeep from Nagodi - the track is not passable by ordinary vehicles. Visit between October and February, confirm forest department arrangements in advance, and plan the descent rather than chasing the last of the light.
Maravanthe Beach
Around thirty kilometres west, Maravanthe is where the highway runs along a narrow strip with the Arabian Sea on one side and the Souparnika river on the other, both visible from the car at once - a genuinely unusual piece of road and one of the more photographed stretches of coast in Karnataka. There is a beach and a temple on the river bank. Visit at sunset. It is an easy half day from Kollur and it is what most pilgrimage groups add when they want something other than a temple.
Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary covers the forested hills around Kodachadri - evergreen and semi-evergreen forest holding leopard, gaur, sambar, langur and a good deal of endemic birdlife, and it forms part of one of the more biodiverse stretches of the Western Ghats. Access is regulated by the forest department and is limited by comparison with the better-known reserves. Visit if the natural history interests you and confirm arrangements in advance; for most visitors the sanctuary is experienced as the country you drive through on the way up to Kodachadri.
Murudeshwar
Around seventy kilometres north, Murudeshwar holds a very large Shiva statue on a headland with the sea on three sides and a twenty-storey gopura beside it - modern rather than ancient, unapologetically so, and genuinely striking for the setting rather than the antiquity. There is a lift to the top of the gopura and diving and boat trips off the coast. Visit as a day from Kollur. Udupi and the Coast
Eighty kilometres south, Udupi holds the Krishna temple where the deity is viewed through the nine-holed Kanakana Kindi window and the ashta matha system has run the worship since Madhvacharya. A hundred and forty-five kilometres north-west through Kadur and Birur, junction towns where the Chikmagalur and Shivamogga roads divide, and Tarikere, which is the turn for the Bhadra sanctuary and reservoir. The country thickens as you go and the Ghats appear to the west. Shivamogga sits on the Tunga and is the natural lunch halt - the last place with a full range of services before the hill roads, and the practical base for this whole region. Groups extending the trip toward Jog or Sagara often stay here rather than pushing on. Beyond it the road turns properly into the Malnad.

Eighty kilometres west and the driving changes completely - narrow winding road through areca gardens and forest, climbing and dropping continuously, with the pace well below what the distance suggests. This is some of the finest Malnad country in Karnataka and the drive is a large part of the trip. Thirthahalli sits on the Tunga near Kuppalli, where Kuvempu was born and where the house is preserved - the Rashtrakavi whose work is bound up with exactly this landscape. Hosanagara follows, in the Sharavathi country. From here to Kollur the road runs through forest for long stretches and the last of it is genuinely remote.

Mookambika Kshetra of the Souparnika
Forty kilometres of forest road with the Ghats closing in, and Kodachadri rising ahead - the peak is visible from some distance out and it explains the geography of the place before you arrive at it. It fills completely in season. We would be wary of anyone offering to secure it for a fee. Sort the room before the vehicle, and if Kollur is full, Byndoor on the coast thirty kilometres west and Udupi eighty south are the practical fallbacks.
Either a trek of around ten kilometres from Nittur or Karakatte, which is a full day and a genuine hill walk, or a local jeep from Nagodi. The jeep track is rough and steep and is not passable by an ordinary vehicle - our car takes you to the jeep point and no further, and a sedan or Innova should not attempt it. Access is regulated by the forest department within the Mookambika sanctuary and arrangements have changed more than once, so confirm the current position before planning a day around it.

Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate and GST separately. Vidyarambham and Navaratri dates are quoted separately given the demand across the district.
A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your dates. The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation includes the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time and the full billing breakdown in writing. For Vidyarambham and Navaratri, a higher advance is requested and bookings should be made far in advance.

For the Kodachadri trek or jeep ride, the operators and the forest department run their own arrangements and those are worth checking directly.
It is the most commonly booked Karnataka temple pairing and we would recommend it. Udupi is eighty kilometres south with the Krishna temple and the Kanakana Kindi window, and Malpe with the boat to St Mary Islands is a little further. Maravanthe, where the highway runs between the sea and the river, sits on the road between them. Two or three days covers Kollur, Udupi and the coast comfortably with the vehicle retained.
October to March. The southwest monsoon from June to August brings extremely heavy rain to these hills, the Malnad roads slow considerably and Kodachadri becomes effectively inaccessible - though the country is at its most beautiful. Navaratri and Vidyarambham, usually September or October, are the peak and fill the town entirely. November to February is the ideal window for a calm darshan and clear views from the peak.
