Gooty
Hill Fort of Rayalaseema
Sixty kilometres of continuing excellent divided highway across open Rayalaseema. This is dry, hot country - the district is among the least watered in India - and the landscape is granite outcrop and scrub, with the occasional irrigated patch marking a tank or a borewell belt. Gooty announces itself with its fort, a Vijayanagara and later Maratha stronghold built across a steep granite outcrop directly above the road. Murari Rao held it and Hyder Ali took it after a long siege; the walls climb the rock in stages and the whole thing is visible from the highway. It is a worthwhile hour for anyone with time in hand, and it is one of three substantial forts on this corridor along with Penukonda and Rayadurgam.
Kurnool
First Capital of Andhra State
Ninety-five kilometres of fast highway north. Dhone is a railway town where the lines toward Guntakal, Kurnool and Nandyal meet, and it is the sort of place whose importance is entirely invisible from the road. Beyond it the country begins to change - the Nallamala hills appear on the eastern horizon and the land drops toward the Tungabhadra basin. Kurnool sits where the Hundri joins the Tungabhadra, with the Konda Reddy fort tower in the middle of the modern city. It was the capital of Andhra State from 1953 to 1956 before the move to Hyderabad, and it retains a certain civic weight from that. Practically it is a substantial city with the hotels, hospitals, fuel and services a circuit trip needs, and it is the base from which Belum, Yaganti, Mahanandi, Ahobilam and Alampur are all reachable. Ahobilam, with nine Narasimha shrines scattered through the Nallamala, is around a hundred and fifty. Alampur, with seventh-century Chalukyan temples, is twenty-seven north across the Tungabhadra. A proper visit is two or three days.
Two at minimum, three to do it properly. The sites lie in four different directions at distances of sixty to a hundred and fifty kilometres, so a single day gets you Kurnool city and one destination. A three-day circuit covers Belum and Yaganti on one day, Mahanandi and Nandyal on another, and Alampur or Orvakal on the third - or substitutes a full day for Ahobilam if that is the purpose. Local transport between these sites is effectively nonexistent, so the vehicle staying with your group is not optional here.
A sedan starts at Rs 10,480. Two and three-day circuit itineraries are quoted on plan and vehicle, and Innova and premium SUV rates are quoted separately. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate, the Andhra Pradesh interstate permit and GST separately, and includes a stated allowance for local running on circuit bookings, which on this route is substantial.
A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your dates. The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation includes the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time and the full billing breakdown in writing. For festival periods at Ahobilam and Mahanandi a higher advance may be requested.

Belum Caves tickets, temple entry and any guide or trek charges at Ahobilam are paid on site. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and on a circuit itinerary the local running forms a large part of that total, which is why our package quotes state the allowance rather than leaving it open.

Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For groups attempting the Ahobilam shrines, which involve genuine trekking on rough hill paths, we recommend it more strongly than usual.
Yes, and it is the most common extension. Srisailam is around a hundred and eighty kilometres east of Kurnool through Atmakur and the Nallamala forest, and Kurnool is the natural overnight for anyone making that journey from Bangalore. Note that the final ghat into Srisailam is restricted by the forest department at night, commonly reported as no vehicles after around 9:00 PM, so a Kurnool base and a morning departure is the sensible way to do it. Tell us at the quotation stage so the kilometres are in the plan.
Yes, and it is the single most underrated site in this part of India. It is the second longest cave system in the country and the longest in the plains - a limestone system formed by an underground river, with around a kilometre and a half open to visitors including the meditation chamber, the stalactite formations and the Patalaganga point far below the surface. Allow two hours underground. It stays cool inside regardless of the season, which makes it the one site in this district that works even in the summer months.
October to February. Kurnool sits in one of the hotter parts of Rayalaseema and April to June is severe, which matters considerably for a circuit involving hill temples, open forts and the Ahobilam trek. Belum Caves is the exception, staying cool inside year round. For Rollapadu and the great Indian bustard, the winter months and an early morning are the only realistic window.
