Vidyashankara Temple
In the same complex and worth as much time as the main shrine. Built around 1338 under Vijayanagara patronage, it fuses Hoysala and Dravidian styles - a stellate plan with a Dravidian tower, carved horses along the outer wall, pierced stone windows and detailed relief work. Its twelve zodiac pillars are the celebrated feature, positioned so that sunlight falls on each in the order of the solar months. Visit in the morning when the light is best for the carving. Allow an hour and look at the inscriptions; the temple is also a substantial historical record of the early Vijayanagara period.
The Tunga and Sirimane Falls
The Tunga runs below the temple and the fish in it are enormous, protected for generations and entirely tame - feeding them from the steps is part of what people come to do. A footbridge crosses to the far bank. Sirimane Falls, around ten kilometres from the town near Kigga, drops in stages into a pool set in forest and is easily reached with a short walk and steps; it is the most visited falls in the area and it is genuinely lovely. Visit Sirimane between July and January when there is real water; there is a small entry charge and the last stretch of road is narrow.
Kigga and the Rishyashringa Temple
A few kilometres from Sringeri, Kigga holds the Rishyashringeshwara temple, dedicated to the sage Rishyashringa whose name the town carries - the ascetic of the Ramayana who was brought to Anga to end a drought and whose presence is traditionally associated with rain. Local practice holds that prayers here are made for rainfall. It is a small hill temple in forest country rather than a grand one, and it takes half an hour. Visit it on the way to or from Sirimane Falls, which is in the same direction, and for the sense of why this particular valley carries the name it does.
Horanadu and Kalasa
The two temples that complete the standard circuit. Horanadu, around fifty kilometres away, holds the Adi Shakthi Annapoorneshwari temple, where the goddess of food is worshipped and where every visitor is fed - the free meal served to all comers is central to the place and is what most pilgrims remember. Kalasa, twenty kilometres from Horanadu on the Bhadra, has the Kalaseshwara temple and a setting among coffee estates and hills that is worth the drive on its own. Visit both together as a full day from Sringeri; the roads between are winding and slower than the distances suggest.
Agumbe and Kudremukh
Agumbe, twenty-five kilometres west, is among the wettest places in India and is sometimes called the Cherrapunji of the South - a small village on the edge of the Ghats with a celebrated sunset viewpoint looking west toward the coast, and a rainforest research station known for its work on king cobras. Kudremukh, to the north, is a national park of shola and grassland with a well-known trek to the horse-face peak that gives it its name. Visit Agumbe for the sunset on a clear evening between November and March; in the monsoon you will see cloud and very little else, though the forest is extraordinary.

Base of the Hoysala Belt
Eighty-five kilometres of good four-lane highway as the route crosses into Hassan district and the landscape shifts into plantation country - coconut, areca and paddy, greener and more enclosed than the open country behind. Channarayapatna is the junction for Shravanabelagola, where the Gommateshwara monolith stands on Vindhyagiri twelve kilometres off the highway. Hassan is the district headquarters and the base for the entire Hoysala circuit. For travellers with time, Belur and Halebidu are within reach and both were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2023 - Belur sits directly on the road ahead, which makes it the easier of the two to build into this journey.
Chikmagalur
Coffee Cradle of India
Belur comes up thirty-five kilometres beyond Hassan and it is the best short stop on this route. The Chennakeshava temple, commissioned in 1117 and worked on for over a century, carries bracket figures around the outer wall that are among the finest sculpture in India. An hour covers it; ninety minutes covers it properly. Chikmagalur follows, and the country changes again - the Baba Budan hills rise to the north and coffee replaces everything else. This is where Indian coffee began, when Baba Budan is said to have carried seven seeds back from Yemen and planted them on the hill that now bears his name. The town is the centre of the Karnataka coffee trade and a substantial share of what India exports is grown within sight of this road.
Sringeri
First Matha of Adi Shankara
Eighty-five kilometres west and south through the coffee belt and into proper Ghat country - the road narrows, the estates give way to forest in stretches, and it winds continuously without ever becoming a serious ghat. Balehonnur, on the Bhadra, is the seat of the Rambhapuri Peetha, one of the five principal Veerashaiva monastic centres, which most travellers pass without knowing. Sringeri sits in a bend of the Tunga with the matha complex on the bank and the town around it. It is small, green and quiet, and the temple complex is the centre of everything. The roads between are winding Malnad hill roads where fifty kilometres takes about ninety minutes, so the vehicle stays with your group throughout - there is no useful local transport out there.

The Chennakeshava temple sits directly on the road thirty-five kilometres beyond Hassan and holds bracket figures among the finest sculpture in India - ninety minutes covers it properly, and it was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2023. Shravanabelagola is twelve kilometres off the highway at Channarayapatna, though the Gommateshwara climb is around six hundred and fifty barefoot steps, so it is a half day rather than a stop. If the weather is right, yes. Agumbe is twenty-five kilometres west and is among the wettest places in India, with a celebrated sunset viewpoint looking out over the Ghats toward the coast and a rainforest research station known for its king cobra work. Between November and March a clear evening there is genuinely memorable. In the monsoon you will see cloud and rain and very little else - which is worth knowing before building a day around it.
September to March. The southwest monsoon from June to August brings extremely heavy rain to this part of the Ghats - Agumbe nearby records some of the highest rainfall in the country - which makes the roads slow and the forest spectacular in equal measure. September to November is the ideal window: everything is green after the rains, the falls are running and the roads have dried. Navaratri at Sringeri is the largest festival and fills the town.
