Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town

Adjoining it, Jew Town runs down to the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 and the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth, with hand-painted Chinese floor tiles and Belgian glass chandeliers. The lane between them is lined with antique and spice shops. Note that the synagogue closes on Fridays and Saturdays and on Jewish holidays.
Marine Drive and the Backwaters
Marine Drive is the promenade along the Ernakulam waterfront, facing the harbour, and it is where the modern city gathers in the evening - a walkway, the Rainbow Bridge, and ferries crossing to Fort Kochi and Vypin. The public ferry is the cheapest and most enjoyable way to move between the islands, and it beats driving around by a considerable margin. From here the wider backwater system opens south toward Alleppey and Kumarakom, and houseboat trips can be picked up from Kochi itself for anything from a few hours to overnight. Visit at dusk. For a group with a vehicle, the ferry-and-walk combination through Fort Kochi is genuinely better than trying to drive the quarter.
Cherai Beach and Vypin
Around twenty-five kilometres north on Vypin island, Cherai is a long stretch of shallow, relatively calm water backed by coconut palms, with a lagoon on the landward side - one of the few places where you can see backwater and sea within a few hundred metres. Dolphins are occasionally seen offshore. Visit for a half day if the itinerary allows, particularly with families, since the water is gentler than most Kerala beaches. Vypin is reached by bridge or by the vehicle ferry from Fort Kochi. The drive up the island is pleasant and there are Chinese nets along the backwater side that are far less crowded than the famous ones.
Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura
Sixteen kilometres from the city, the Hill Palace was the seat of the Kochi royal family, a complex of over forty buildings in traditional architecture set in landscaped grounds with a deer park, and it now houses the largest archaeological museum in Kerala. The collection includes the royal crown and ornaments, paintings, sculpture, epigraphy, manuscripts and coins covering the long history of the Kochi kingdom. Visit for the collection and for the grounds, which are a genuine relief from the city. It is closed on Mondays. This is the best single answer for a rainy afternoon in Kochi, and it is consistently underrated by visitors who never leave Fort Kochi.
Kathakali, Kalaripayattu and Athirappilly
Kochi is the easiest place in Kerala to see Kathakali properly - several theatres run daily evening performances with the elaborate make-up applied on stage beforehand, which is half the experience, and the same venues often stage Kalaripayattu, the Kerala martial art. Book ahead in season. Further out, Athirappilly Falls lies around seventy kilometres north-east near Chalakudy, on the road you drove in on: the largest waterfall in Kerala at roughly twenty-five metres and eighty metres wide, spectacular from June through January and much reduced by March. It is a full day from Kochi, or better still built into the inbound journey as a detour rather than a separate trip.

This is where Chennai-bound traffic peels off and the road south thins noticeably.
Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
Dharmapuri is an agricultural district centre, and Hogenakkal lies forty-five kilometres east where the Cauvery drops through a gorge - a half-day detour that does not fit a Kochi run but is worth knowing about for a slower return. Thoppur is the one demanding section of this route. The highway climbs steeply between Dharmapuri and Salem, and although four-laned throughout, the gradient is severe enough that loaded trucks slow to walking pace and lane discipline suffers. Our drivers hold back rather than joining in. Beyond it the road opens out into Salem, built on iron ore and mango orchards, which has the best highway restaurants of the whole journey - proper parking, clean facilities, quick service. This is the natural breakfast halt on an early departure. Budget forty minutes and use it properly, because the next good stop is three hours on.
Coimbatore
Manchester of South India
At Salem the route leaves NH 44 and joins NH 544 heading west, and this is fast four-lane running across the Kongu plains. The Kaveri is crossed near Bhavani, with Erode just beyond - the centre of the largest turmeric trade in India and a major textile town in its own right. Tiruppur follows, the knitwear capital, whose garment export industry is visible along the highway in the density of units and transport depots. Avinashi holds an old and architecturally significant Shiva temple directly on the road, worth thirty minutes for anyone with an interest. Coimbatore is bypassed rather than entered, which is the sensible choice on a through journey. Note that recent driver reports have flagged flyover construction detours on the Salem bypass to Neelambur stretch and diversions around Madukkarai on the Coimbatore approach, so our drivers check current conditions rather than assuming a clear run.
Palakkad
Granary of Kerala
This is the most geographically interesting forty-five kilometres of the journey. The road crosses the Palakkad Gap, the only major break in sixteen hundred kilometres of Western Ghats, a corridor about thirty kilometres wide between the Nilgiris and the Anaimalais. The wind funnels through it constantly, which is why this belt has wind farms and why Coimbatore is noticeably breezier than the rest of the Tamil Nadu plains. Thrissur
Cultural Capital of Kerala
Sixty kilometres south-west through paddy and plantation country, with the Ghats now on the eastern horizon rather than ahead. The road is good and the driving is easy, and this stretch passes quickly. Thrissur is built in concentric rings around the Thekkinkadu Maidanam, the hillock at its centre crowned by the Vadakkumnathan temple, one of the oldest Shiva temples in Kerala and a monument of considerable architectural importance. The city is the acknowledged cultural capital of the state, and the Thrissur Pooram, held around April and May, is the most spectacular temple festival in Kerala - caparisoned elephants, percussion ensembles of hundreds of musicians, and a fireworks display that runs through the night. If your travel dates fall near Pooram, expect the city to be full and book accommodation far ahead.
Kochi
Queen of the Arabian Sea
The final ninety kilometres run south through Chalakudy, where the road east leads thirty kilometres to Athirappilly, the largest waterfall in Kerala - a genuinely worthwhile detour if you have built the time in, and best from June through January. Angamaly and Aluva follow on the Periyar, and from here the Kochi metropolitan belt begins in earnest. This stretch is where the current NH 544 works between Thrissur and Angamaly bite, and drivers familiar with the route have been using an internal line via Athani and Ashtamichira rejoining at Kodakara as the more predictable option. A sedan starts at Rs 13,000 for a one-way drop. Two-day journeys broken at Coimbatore or Thrissur, and Kerala circuit itineraries taking in Munnar or Alleppey, are quoted on vehicle and plan. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate, the Kerala interstate permit and GST separately, and is sent in writing within two hours. Tolls on this corridor are substantial and billed at actual, so ask for the expected figure up front.

Athirappilly is around thirty kilometres east of Chalakudy, which sits on the final ninety-kilometre stretch into Kochi, so the detour costs roughly two hours including time at the falls rather than requiring a separate day trip later. It is the largest waterfall in Kerala and is at its most impressive from June through January, reducing considerably by March. Tell us at the quotation stage so the time and kilometres are in the plan.
September to March, with September and October particularly good in Kochi - post-monsoon greenery, lighter crowds and comfortable weather. April and May are hot and humid on the coast. June to August is the southwest monsoon, which is atmospheric and green but wet, and it is also when Athirappilly is at its most spectacular. If your dates fall near Thrissur Pooram in April or May, expect that city to be very full.
