Places to Visit in Lakkundi

Kasivisvesvara Temple
The finest building at Lakkundi and one of the finest Kalyani Chalukya temples anywhere - a twin shrine with the Kasivisvesvara facing a smaller Surya Narayana temple across a shared court, so the two look at each other. The doorframes and the pierced stone windows carry carving of a density that repays close and slow attention, and the tower is a late Chalukya form worked with real confidence. Visit in the morning when the light reaches the east face. Allow an hour, which is more than most people give it and less than it deserves.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Tumakuru
Kalpataru Nadu
The route leaves Bangalore northwest on NH 48, and the Nelamangala junction is the only stretch that depends on timing rather than road - our drivers aim to be past it before 7:00 AM, since four corridors diverge there and it builds fast on weekend mornings. Beyond Nelamangala the highway is six-lane and quick. Tumakuru is the Kalpataru Nadu, the land of the wish-fulfilling tree, which here means coconut - the district grows a great deal of it. The Siddaganga Math on the edge of town has fed and educated students free for generations and is worth knowing about as you pass.

Chitradurga
Fort of Seven Rounds
A hundred and thirty kilometres of fast divided highway across increasingly dry plateau. Sira is easy to drive past and worth a note: it was the seat of a Mughal subah in the early eighteenth century, the southernmost formal Mughal province, and the Jumma Masjid and the remains of the Khan Bagh survive from it. Chitradurga is the stop on this route. The fort climbs a granite outcrop in seven concentric lines of wall, using the natural boulders as part of the defence, and it is among the most impressive hill forts in India - the story of Onake Obavva defending a breach with a pestle belongs to it. Two hours does it justice. On a Lakkundi run our drivers stop here for breakfast whether or not you climb.
Haveri
Confluence Town
Fast highway through the cotton and maize country of central Karnataka. Davangere built its name on cotton mills and keeps it now on the benne dosa - butter dosa - which is genuinely worth stopping for and which most travellers on this road do. Harihar follows on the Tungabhadra with its twelfth-century temple to Harihara, Vishnu and Shiva in a single image. Byadgi, near Haveri, is the chilli town: the deep-red GI-tagged Byadgi chilli is grown and traded here and prized across India for colour rather than heat, and in season the yards are a striking thing to pass. This whole stretch is agricultural trading country and the highway reflects it.
Lakkundi
Town of a Hundred Stepwells
Hubballi is the commercial and railway hub of north Karnataka and the largest city on this route after Bangalore. From here the road turns east toward Gadag through open Deccan country - flat, dry, with black cotton soil and very little tree cover, which is a completely different landscape from anything on our southern routes. Gadag holds the Trikuteshwara complex and the Saraswati shrine with its carved pillars, and Lakkundi is twelve kilometres beyond it. The village announces itself with nothing at all - there is no gate and no signage of consequence, and the temples simply begin appearing among the houses. Accommodation is at Gadag or Hubballi rather than Lakkundi itself. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. A 6:00 AM departure puts most travellers in by around 2:00 PM.

Cab Packages for Every Traveller
Every quotation is built around what you actually need rather than a fixed menu. The four tiers below describe how we typically structure car booking enquiries on this corridor.
North Karnataka Heritage Circuit Package
The booking that makes sense of this journey and the one most Lakkundi enquiries should become. Four or five days covers the sequence properly: Lakkundi, Gadag, Itagi and Dambal for the Kalyani Chalukyas; Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal two hours north for the early Chalukyas and the UNESCO group; Hampi two hours east for Vijayanagara. That is three successive imperial styles in one trip, and there is no better way to understand any of them. The vehicle stays with the group throughout; these are dispersed rural sites with no useful local transport.
Chalukya Temple Circuit Package
For visitors coming specifically for the Kalyani Chalukya material rather than the wider heritage run. Lakkundi, Itagi, Dambal and Gadag together are the finest concentration of that school anywhere, and two days with the vehicle retained covers them without hurrying. Itagi in particular deserves a proper visit rather than a stop. Innova and Innova Crysta are the usual choice. This is a specialist itinerary and we would rather build it around what you actually want to see than sell a fixed list.
Two-Day Journey Package
Eight hours each way makes the outbound day largely a drive, and Lakkundi with Gadag is a comfortable second day rather than a rushed afternoon. Two nights at Gadag or Hubballi is the practical minimum; three lets you add Itagi and Dambal properly. Chitradurga on the outbound leg is worth building in deliberately - the fort is two hours and it sits at the two-hundred kilometre mark, which is exactly where a break belongs on this road.
Premium and Luxury Cab Package
For senior family groups, guest hosting and travellers who want a long highway run and a heritage circuit to be comfortable. This tier covers our premium car rentals in bangalore range and the innova hycross rent bangalore fleet, alongside our luxury car rental bangalore options. North Karnataka in the warmer months is genuinely hot and the sites are open stone with no shade - the vehicle the group returns to between temples is a functional part of how the day goes.
Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment
Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for the Bangalore to Lakkundi corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged, and everything inside it is stated before you confirm.
Advance payment: 20 percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.
Included in the Quoted Fare
1. Base fare and fuel charges
2. Driver allowance
Not Included in the Quoted Fare
3. Toll and parking charges
4. Interstate tax and permit charges
5. Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra
6. Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage
7. GST
Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel cover where required. Vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law.
Three points are specific to this route. First, it stays entirely within Karnataka, so no interstate permit arises - the exclusion above remains in our standard terms because it applies on our other corridors. Second, Archaeological Survey site fees, museum entry and any local guide charges are paid on site; a guide at Lakkundi is genuinely worth having and is arranged locally rather than through us. Third, on a heritage circuit the running between sites is substantial - Itagi is forty kilometres away, Badami and Hampi around two hours each - so our circuit quotes carry a stated allowance rather than a bare point-to-point figure.

How to Book a Car for Rent in Bangalore — Step-by-Step
Booking a Car for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps:
STEP1 | Contact Tejas Travels Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Share your travel date, Bangalore pickup location (area or landmark — Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, hotel name, tech park), destination or full itinerary, number of passengers, and preferred vehicle. For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number — the driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically. For luxury vehicles (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Rolls-Royce), also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding, VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire. |
STEP2 | Receive Your Written Quote Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email. The quote clearly itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate (Rs/km or flat package), driver allowance (Rs 400-1,000/day depending on vehicle class), applicable toll estimates, and any interstate permit if applicable (Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati). No verbal-only prices — everything in writing before you confirm. For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage. If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time. |
STEP3 | Confirm Your Booking & Pay Advance Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone. A 15-20% advance payment confirms the booking. Payment: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link. Advance receipt within 30 minutes. Confirmation includes: driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location, and full billing breakdown — all in writing. For luxury vehicles (Rolls-Royce Ghost, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class), advance may be higher due to limited fleet and Bangalore peak-date demand (wedding season November-February, New Year). |
STEP4 | Your Driver Arrives Early Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at your confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure. For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate. The vehicle is clean, sanitized, fuelled, and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire. The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy. During the trip, the driver handles all routing, toll payments, and Bangalore traffic navigation. At trip end, balance payment is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional km or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate. |

Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Lakkundi Cab
The bangalore to lakkundi distance is around 430 km via NH 48 through Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Davangere and Hubballi to Gadag, with reported figures between 415 km and 450 km. A cab takes 7 hours 30 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes with one halt. It is four and six-lane highway almost the whole way with no ghat and no significant bottleneck, which makes it an easier eight hours than most.
Around fifty Kalyani Chalukya temples and close to a hundred stepwells, in a working village of a few thousand people. The Kasivisvesvara is the finest temple and the Brahma Jinalaya the largest Jain one, built around 1007 by Attimabbe. The Musukina Bhavi is the best of the stepwells. There is a small Archaeological Survey museum. Nothing is laid out as a heritage park - the buildings stand among houses and fields, which is a large part of the appeal.
Because of a change in stone. Early Chalukya building used sandstone, which limits how fine a line a carver can cut. At Lakkundi the builders moved to soapstone - denser, softer to work, and capable of holding detail sandstone cannot. That shift is what made the later Hoysala manner possible, and Lakkundi is where you can see both on one site in buildings a few decades apart. If you have stood at Belur and wondered where that came from, this is the answer.
On its own, probably not - and we would rather say so. Lakkundi is two or three hours, Gadag another two. What makes the journey worth it is the circuit: Itagi forty kilometres east with the finest Kalyani Chalukya temple anywhere, Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal two hours north, Hampi two hours east. Four or five days covering three successive imperial styles is a genuinely exceptional trip, and that is how we build most bookings that start here.
Yes. The Mahadeva temple at Itagi, forty kilometres east, was built in 1112 and a contemporary inscription calls it the emperor among temples - which having seen it is not an unreasonable claim. It is the most accomplished Kalyani Chalukya building surviving, with a pillared hall of exceptional quality, and it receives almost no visitors. If you see one thing in this district beyond Lakkundi itself, make it Itagi.
A sedan starts at Rs 12,440. Four and five-day north Karnataka heritage itineraries taking in Badami and Hampi are quoted on plan and vehicle. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate and GST separately, and circuit quotes carry a stated allowance for the running between sites.
A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your dates. The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation includes the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time and the full billing breakdown in writing.
Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. No interstate permit arises since the route stays within Karnataka. Archaeological Survey site fees, museum entry and local guide charges are paid on site. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and circuit running is part of that total.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For college and school heritage groups, which travel this circuit regularly, a group policy is usually inexpensive and is often required by the institution.
October to February. North Karnataka from March to June is severe - this is open Deccan plateau with very little tree cover and temperatures well into the forties - and these are open stone sites with no shade at all. The monsoon is workable and the country is greener, though the black cotton soil turns heavy. November to January is the ideal window, with the added advantage that Hampi and Badami are also at their best then.
