Places to Visit in Lakkundi

Kasivisvesvara Temple

Kasivisvesvara Temple

The finest building at Lakkundi and one of the finest Kalyani Chalukya temples anywhere - a twin shrine with the Kasivisvesvara facing a smaller Surya Narayana temple across a shared court, so the two look at each other. The doorframes and the pierced stone windows carry carving of a density that repays close and slow attention, and the tower is a late Chalukya form worked with real confidence. Visit in the morning when the light reaches the east face. Allow an hour, which is more than most people give it and less than it deserves.

Visit in the morning when the light reaches the east face. Allow an hour, which is more than most people give it and less than it deserves.

Brahma Jinalaya

Brahma Jinalaya

The largest Jain temple at Lakkundi, dedicated to Mahavira and built around 1007 by Attimabbe - a woman of the Chalukya court remembered as Danachintamani, the wish-fulfilling jewel of charity, who commissioned temples and had copies of a Kannada Jain epic made and distributed. It is the earlier building here and shows the sandstone manner before the shift, which makes it the useful thing to look at first. Visit before the Kasivisvesvara so the material difference registers. The patron is worth knowing about; there is very little about her on the ground.

Manikesvara and the Musukina Bhavi

Manikesvara and the Musukina Bhavi

The Manikesvara temple stands beside the Musukina Bhavi, a covered stepwell with a shrine set into its descent and pillared galleries around the water - the finest of the Lakkundi kalyanis and the one that best shows what these structures were: not utilities but architecture. In a district this dry the stepwells were the reason the town existed. Visit in the late afternoon when the light drops into the well. Steps are uneven and there are no railings, which is worth knowing with small children or elderly travellers.

The Stepwells and the ASI Museum

The Stepwells and the ASI Museum

Something close to a hundred stepwells survive around Lakkundi in varying condition, from substantial galleried structures to plain tanks, and they are scattered through the village rather than signposted. The Archaeological Survey maintains a small site museum holding sculpture, inscriptions and architectural fragments recovered locally, which is the best available introduction to what you are looking at. Visit the museum first if it is open - hours are limited and it closes on some days - and then walk. A local guide is genuinely useful here in a way it is not at more organised sites.

Gadag and the Trikuteshwara

Gadag and the Trikuteshwara

Twelve kilometres away, Gadag holds the Trikuteshwara temple complex - three linked shrines with a Saraswati temple alongside whose carved pillars are among the most elaborate lathe-turned work in the Chalukya repertoire, deeply undercut and almost impossible to photograph adequately. The town itself is a cotton and handloom centre. Visit the Saraswati shrine specifically; the pillars are the reason to go and most visitors walk past them on the way to the main sanctum. Allow ninety minutes for the complex.

Itagi and Dambal

Itagi and Dambal

Itagi, around forty kilometres east, holds the Mahadeva temple of 1112, which a contemporary inscription calls the emperor among temples - and having stood in front of it the claim is not unreasonable. It is the most accomplished Kalyani Chalukya building surviving, with a pillared hall of exceptional quality and almost no visitors. Dambal, twenty kilometres from Lakkundi, has the Doddabasappa temple with a twenty-four pointed stellate plan that is unlike anything else. Visit both as a full day from Lakkundi. If you see one thing beyond Lakkundi itself, make it Itagi.

Cab Packages for Every Traveller

Every quotation is built around what you actually need rather than a fixed menu. The four tiers below describe how we typically structure car booking enquiries on this corridor.

North Karnataka Heritage Circuit Package

The booking that makes sense of this journey and the one most Lakkundi enquiries should become. Four or five days covers the sequence properly: Lakkundi, Gadag, Itagi and Dambal for the Kalyani Chalukyas; Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal two hours north for the early Chalukyas and the UNESCO group; Hampi two hours east for Vijayanagara. That is three successive imperial styles in one trip, and there is no better way to understand any of them. The vehicle stays with the group throughout; these are dispersed rural sites with no useful local transport.

Chalukya Temple Circuit Package

For visitors coming specifically for the Kalyani Chalukya material rather than the wider heritage run. Lakkundi, Itagi, Dambal and Gadag together are the finest concentration of that school anywhere, and two days with the vehicle retained covers them without hurrying. Itagi in particular deserves a proper visit rather than a stop. Innova and Innova Crysta are the usual choice. This is a specialist itinerary and we would rather build it around what you actually want to see than sell a fixed list.

Two-Day Journey Package

Eight hours each way makes the outbound day largely a drive, and Lakkundi with Gadag is a comfortable second day rather than a rushed afternoon. Two nights at Gadag or Hubballi is the practical minimum; three lets you add Itagi and Dambal properly. Chitradurga on the outbound leg is worth building in deliberately - the fort is two hours and it sits at the two-hundred kilometre mark, which is exactly where a break belongs on this road.

Premium and Luxury Cab Package

For senior family groups, guest hosting and travellers who want a long highway run and a heritage circuit to be comfortable. This tier covers our premium car rentals in bangalore range and the innova hycross rent bangalore fleet, alongside our luxury car rental bangalore options. North Karnataka in the warmer months is genuinely hot and the sites are open stone with no shade - the vehicle the group returns to between temples is a functional part of how the day goes.

Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment

Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for the Bangalore to Lakkundi corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged, and everything inside it is stated before you confirm.

Advance payment: 20 percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.

Included in the Quoted Fare

1.   Base fare and fuel charges

2.   Driver allowance

Not Included in the Quoted Fare

3.   Toll and parking charges

4.   Interstate tax and permit charges

5.   Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra

6.   Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage

7.   GST

Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel cover where required. Vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law.

Three points are specific to this route. First, it stays entirely within Karnataka, so no interstate permit arises - the exclusion above remains in our standard terms because it applies on our other corridors. Second, Archaeological Survey site fees, museum entry and any local guide charges are paid on site; a guide at Lakkundi is genuinely worth having and is arranged locally rather than through us. Third, on a heritage circuit the running between sites is substantial - Itagi is forty kilometres away, Badami and Hampi around two hours each - so our circuit quotes carry a stated allowance rather than a bare point-to-point figure.

How to Book a Car for Rent in Bangalore — Step-by-Step

Booking a Car for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps:

STEP1

Contact Tejas Travels

Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Share your travel date, Bangalore pickup location (area or landmark — Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, hotel name, tech park), destination or full itinerary, number of passengers, and preferred vehicle. For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number — the driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically. For luxury vehicles (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Rolls-Royce), also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding, VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.

STEP2

Receive Your Written Quote

Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email. The quote clearly itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate (Rs/km or flat package), driver allowance (Rs 400-1,000/day depending on vehicle class), applicable toll estimates, and any interstate permit if applicable (Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati). No verbal-only prices — everything in writing before you confirm. For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage. If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time.

STEP3

Confirm Your Booking & Pay Advance

Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone. A 15-20% advance payment confirms the booking. Payment: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link. Advance receipt within 30 minutes. Confirmation includes: driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location, and full billing breakdown — all in writing. For luxury vehicles (Rolls-Royce Ghost, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class), advance may be higher due to limited fleet and Bangalore peak-date demand (wedding season November-February, New Year).

STEP4

Your Driver Arrives Early

Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at your confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure. For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate. The vehicle is clean, sanitized, fuelled, and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire. The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy. During the trip, the driver handles all routing, toll payments, and Bangalore traffic navigation. At trip end, balance payment is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional km or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick Booking for Hire: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your vehicle preference, Bangalore pickup location, destination, and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Lakkundi Cab

The bangalore to lakkundi distance is around 430 km via NH 48 through Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Davangere and Hubballi to Gadag, with reported figures between 415 km and 450 km. A cab takes 7 hours 30 minutes to 8 hours 30 minutes with one halt. It is four and six-lane highway almost the whole way with no ghat and no significant bottleneck, which makes it an easier eight hours than most.

Around fifty Kalyani Chalukya temples and close to a hundred stepwells, in a working village of a few thousand people. The Kasivisvesvara is the finest temple and the Brahma Jinalaya the largest Jain one, built around 1007 by Attimabbe. The Musukina Bhavi is the best of the stepwells. There is a small Archaeological Survey museum. Nothing is laid out as a heritage park - the buildings stand among houses and fields, which is a large part of the appeal.

Because of a change in stone. Early Chalukya building used sandstone, which limits how fine a line a carver can cut. At Lakkundi the builders moved to soapstone - denser, softer to work, and capable of holding detail sandstone cannot. That shift is what made the later Hoysala manner possible, and Lakkundi is where you can see both on one site in buildings a few decades apart. If you have stood at Belur and wondered where that came from, this is the answer.

On its own, probably not - and we would rather say so. Lakkundi is two or three hours, Gadag another two. What makes the journey worth it is the circuit: Itagi forty kilometres east with the finest Kalyani Chalukya temple anywhere, Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal two hours north, Hampi two hours east. Four or five days covering three successive imperial styles is a genuinely exceptional trip, and that is how we build most bookings that start here.

Yes. The Mahadeva temple at Itagi, forty kilometres east, was built in 1112 and a contemporary inscription calls it the emperor among temples - which having seen it is not an unreasonable claim. It is the most accomplished Kalyani Chalukya building surviving, with a pillared hall of exceptional quality, and it receives almost no visitors. If you see one thing in this district beyond Lakkundi itself, make it Itagi.

A sedan starts at Rs 12,440. Four and five-day north Karnataka heritage itineraries taking in Badami and Hampi are quoted on plan and vehicle. Every quote itemizes base fare, driver allowance, toll estimate and GST separately, and circuit quotes carry a stated allowance for the running between sites.

A 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your dates. The advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation includes the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration, departure time and the full billing breakdown in writing.

Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. No interstate permit arises since the route stays within Karnataka. Archaeological Survey site fees, museum entry and local guide charges are paid on site. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and circuit running is part of that total.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For college and school heritage groups, which travel this circuit regularly, a group policy is usually inexpensive and is often required by the institution.

October to February. North Karnataka from March to June is severe - this is open Deccan plateau with very little tree cover and temperatures well into the forties - and these are open stone sites with no shade at all. The monsoon is workable and the country is greener, though the black cotton soil turns heavy. November to January is the ideal window, with the added advantage that Hampi and Badami are also at their best then.
