Padi Igguthappa Temple
At Kakkabe, around twenty-five kilometres from Virajpet, stands the principal temple of the Kodava people - Igguthappa, a form of Subrahmanya, is the presiding deity of the community and this shrine is central to Kodava religious life in a way no other in the district is. The annual festival in March or April draws Kodavas home from across the world. Visit in the morning. The setting among coffee estates below the hills is part of it, and for anyone interested in Kodava culture specifically this is the place to start.
Nalknad Palace and Tadiandamol
Nalknad, beyond Kakkabe, is a modest two-storey palace built in the 1790s by the Haleri rajas as a hunting seat and refuge, with painted walls and carved wood in the Kodava manner - the last raja was captured here. Behind it rises Tadiandamol at around 1,748 metres, the highest peak in Kodagu, with the trail starting near the palace. Visit the palace for half an hour and the trek as a full day. The climb is around seven kilometres each way through shola and grassland and is moderately demanding rather than severe.
Iruppu Falls and Brahmagiri
Around fifty kilometres south, Iruppu drops through forest on the Lakshmana Tirtha river with a Rameshwara temple at its foot, and tradition connects the stream to Rama and Lakshmana - it is a short walk up from the road and among the more visited falls in the district. Behind it the Brahmagiri range holds a wildlife sanctuary and a trek with forest department permits. Visit the falls between July and December when there is real water; the Brahmagiri trek needs its own day and current permit arrangements confirmed in advance.
Nagarhole National Park
Around fifty kilometres east, Nagarhole is one of the better tiger reserves in India and among the most reliable in the country for elephant and gaur, with leopard, dhole and a strong tiger population - safaris run from Nagarhole and Kutta gates, morning and afternoon, booked with the forest department. Visit between October and May; March to May concentrates animals around water and gives the best sightings. Numbers are capped and the popular slots go early, so book with the department before fixing the rest of the itinerary.
Bylakuppe and Namdroling Monastery
Forty kilometres north near Kushalnagar, Bylakuppe is the largest Tibetan settlement in South India, established in the early 1960s, and the Namdroling monastery at its centre - the golden temple - holds three enormous gilded statues in a prayer hall that is genuinely unexpected in the Karnataka countryside. Several thousand monks and nuns study here. Visit in the morning or for the evening prayers, which are the better time. Dress modestly, photography is restricted inside, and note that entry to parts of the settlement can require permits for foreign nationals.

Maddur is where the vada was invented and where most travellers stop for it.

Sugarcane country through Mandya, where the KRS dam and the Cauvery canals made the district what it is. Srirangapatna sits on an island in the river a little further on and holds a great deal - the Ranganathaswamy temple, the Daria Daulat Bagh with its painted walls, the Gumbaz, and the spot where Tipu fell in 1799. An hour there is well spent if the day allows. Mysore is the natural breakfast halt and needs no introduction. On a Coorg run most groups pass through, though for anyone with a spare half day the palace and Chamundi Hills are right there. Beyond Mysore the road turns west and the country begins to change.
Gonikoppal
Coffee Market Town of South Kodagu
Seventy-five kilometres west and south-west on good two-lane road, with the country turning from the dry Mysore plain into something greener as the Kodagu foothills approach. Hunsur is a tobacco and trading town and the turn for the Nagarhole gates, which sit around forty kilometres south-west of it. The road crosses into Kodagu and the change is immediate - coffee under shade trees, pepper vines on the trunks, and the light going green. Gonikoppal is a working coffee market town and the commercial centre of the southern half of the district; between here and Virajpet the estates are continuous.

Thirty kilometres of estate road, gently climbing, with coffee on both sides and the Brahmagiri range visible to the south on a clear day. This is some of the more attractive short driving in Karnataka and it takes about forty minutes. Virajpet is compact - a clock tower, St Anne church from 1792, coffee and honey traders, and a market. It is a town people use rather than visit, which is exactly its value: the homestays around it are on working estates rather than in resort compounds, and Igguthappa, Nalknad, Tadiandamol and Iruppu are all closer from here than from Madikeri. Many estate properties sit on unlit private lanes, so send us the name at booking and we will confirm the approach. A 7:00 AM departure puts most travellers in by around 1:00 PM.

The bangalore to virajpet distance is around 250 km via Mysore, Hunsur and Gonikoppal, with reported figures between 240 km and 275 km depending on the pickup point and routing. A cab takes 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes with one halt. The route stays entirely within Karnataka and there is no ghat of consequence, which makes it one of our easier long routes.
It depends what you want to see. Madikeri has Raja Seat, Abbey Falls, the fort, Talacauvery and most of the district hotels, and in season it is very busy. Virajpet is closer to Igguthappa, Nalknad, Tadiandamol, Chelavara, Iruppu, Nagarhole and Bylakuppe - most of South Coorg, and quieter. They are thirty-five kilometres apart so neither excludes the other. Tell us what is on your list and we will place the base rather than defaulting to the busier half.
More than the town suggests. Padi Igguthappa at Kakkabe is the principal Kodava temple; Nalknad Palace beyond it is a Haleri hunting seat with the Tadiandamol trailhead behind; Chelavara Falls is nearby; Iruppu Falls and the Brahmagiri range are fifty kilometres south; Nagarhole is fifty east; and Bylakuppe with the Namdroling monastery is forty north. Two nights covers a sensible selection and three covers most of it.
Moderate rather than severe. It is around seven kilometres each way from near Nalknad Palace to the summit at about 1,748 metres, through shola forest and open grassland, and a reasonably fit walker manages it in a day. It is the highest peak in Kodagu and the views from the ridge are the reward. Permits and access are regulated locally and arrangements change, so confirm before planning around it. We drop and collect rather than waiting at the trailhead.
Yes - the Nagarhole and Kutta gates are around fifty kilometres east and it is a comfortable morning or afternoon run. Safaris are operated by the forest department in fixed sessions with capped numbers, booked with them directly, and the popular slots go early in season. March to May gives the best sightings as animals concentrate around water. Book the safari before fixing the rest of the itinerary and we will build the day around the slot you secure.

Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences, but passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. For the Tadiandamol and Brahmagiri treks, the local and forest department arrangements are separate again and worth checking directly.
October to May, with October to February the most pleasant - clear, cool and green after the rains. March to May is warmer but gives the best Nagarhole sightings. The southwest monsoon from June to September is very heavy here and estate roads can be difficult, though Coorg in the rain has a genuine following and the falls are at their best. Book well ahead for long weekends whenever you travel.
