Marikamba Temple

Sahasralinga
About 17 kilometres from Sirsi, the Shalmala river flows over a bed of rock carved with hundreds of Shiva lingas, many with Nandi figures facing them, believed to have been commissioned by a ruler of the Sonda dynasty in the late seventeenth century. When the water level drops after the monsoon, the carvings emerge across the riverbed. A hanging bridge over the river gives a good view, and on Maha Shivaratri the site fills with pilgrims.
Unchalli Falls
Also known as Lushington Falls after the British officer who recorded it in 1845, Unchalli is where the Aghanashini river plunges about 116 metres into a deep, forested gorge. The viewpoint is reached by a short walk down steps from the parking area, and in the monsoon the roar and spray are overwhelming. It lies around 35 kilometres from Sirsi near Heggarne, and the forest drive is part of the experience.
Yana Rocks
Two massive black limestone peaks, Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara, rise out of the forest at Yana, about 60 kilometres from Sirsi. A cave shrine to Bhairaveshwara sits at the base of the larger peak, with water dripping constantly onto a linga inside. The short forest trail from the parking area to the rocks is shaded and easy. Yana is often visited on the way to Gokarna, and it is the highlight of many sirsi yana gokarna tour package plans.
Banavasi
Around 22 kilometres from Sirsi on the banks of the Varada river, Banavasi was the capital of the Kadamba dynasty, the first native Kannada kingdom, and is one of the oldest towns in Karnataka. The Madhukeshwara temple, with its stone cot, finely carved Nandi and a remarkable monolithic stone chariot, is the main attraction. The annual Kadambotsava festival celebrates the town's place in Kannada history.
Sonda
About 20 kilometres from Sirsi, Sonda was the seat of the Sonda Nayakas and is home to the Swadi Vadiraja Mutt, associated with the Madhva saint Sri Vadiraja Tirtha, and the Swarnavalli Mutt. The ruins of the old Sonda fort lie in the forest nearby. The area is peaceful, with arecanut gardens and ancient temples, and suits travellers interested in heritage and pilgrimage.
Shivaganga Falls
Near Sonda, the Shalmala river drops about 74 metres into a narrow gorge at Shivaganga Falls. A viewpoint above the falls looks across a deep green valley. It is quieter than Unchalli and, like most waterfalls here, at its best between July and November.
Benne Hole Falls
A lesser-known waterfall around 30 kilometres from Sirsi, where a tributary of the Aghanashini falls in a single white stream into a rocky pool. The name means butter stream, from its smooth, creamy flow. It is reached by a short forest trek from the road, and the pool at the base is a favourite with photographers.
