Olakal Theertha

Patala Ganga
A deep underground spring reached by a flight of steps descending into the rock. The water is considered sacred and is said to rise and fall in mysterious ways through the year. It is dark, cool and quiet, a striking contrast to the bright, exposed rock outside.
The Summit, the Nandi and Shantala Drop
The final stretch to the top is steep, with iron railings bolted into the bare granite. At the summit, a Nandi carved from stone sits on the very edge of the cliff, facing out over the plains, and it is the image most people come home with. Nearby is a sheer drop known as Shantala Drop, associated in local legend with the Hoysala queen Shantala Devi. On a clear morning, the view stretches across Tumakuru and Bangalore Rural districts.
Devarayanadurga
About 35 kilometres from Shivagange, near Tumakuru, Devarayanadurga is a forested hill with the Yoga Narasimha temple at the top and the Bhoga Narasimha temple lower down. The drive up through the reserve forest is one of the prettiest short drives in the region, and the hill is noticeably cooler than the plains. It pairs perfectly with a morning at Shivagange.
Namada Chilume
Just below Devarayanadurga, Namada Chilume is a natural spring flowing out of a rock. Legend says Lord Rama shot an arrow into the rock to draw water so he could apply his namam, the sacred mark, which gives the place its name. A small deer park next to the spring makes it a favourite stop for families with children.
Siddaganga Mutt, Tumakuru
About 35 kilometres from Shivagange, the Siddaganga Mutt is one of Karnataka's most respected religious and educational institutions, known for providing free food, shelter and education to thousands of children every year. The Siddalingeshwara temple and the calm of the campus make it a meaningful stop on the way back.
