Around five kilometres away, the Palayur St Thomas Church is believed to have been founded by St Thomas the Apostle in 52 AD, making it one of the earliest Christian sites in India. The church grounds include the tank where the saint is said to have baptised the first converts, and the annual feast draws large numbers of pilgrims. It is a peaceful and historically significant stop just outside the temple town.
Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple
About 22 kilometres south of Guruvayur on the banks of the Theevra river, Thriprayar is one of the four temples of the Nalambalam pilgrimage dedicated to Rama and his brothers, especially popular during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam in July and August. The idol is believed to have been worshipped by Krishna himself. The fish in the temple river, fed by devotees as an offering, are a charming sight.
Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thrissur
