Ramanathaswamy Temple

Agni Theertham
The stretch of sea about a hundred metres east of the temple, where pilgrims take a ritual dip before the 22 theertham bath. The water is calm and shallow, and the sunrise here, with priests performing rites for ancestors along the shore, is one of the most moving sights on the island. Arrive by 6 AM to finish before the main temple queues build.
Dhanushkodi and Arichal Munai
About 20 kilometres south-east, at the tip of the island, dhanushkodi was a thriving port town until a cyclone destroyed it in December 1964. Its ruined church, railway station and post office still stand in the sand. Since 2017 a road runs all the way to Arichal Munai, the final point, where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean and Sri Lanka lies less than 30 kilometres away. The shoals of Ram Setu begin here. Plan to leave before sunset, as the area is quiet and exposed after dark.
Kothandaramaswamy Temple
On the Dhanushkodi road, about 12 kilometres from town, this temple marks the place where Vibhishana is said to have surrendered to Rama and been crowned king of Lanka. It was one of the few structures in the area to survive the 1964 cyclone. The sea on both sides of the narrow strip of land makes the drive memorable.
Pamban Bridge
The pamban bridge is really two bridges. The Annai Indira Gandhi road bridge, opened in 1988, carries your cab 2.3 kilometres over the sea with views of fishing boats and turquoise water on both sides. Alongside it runs the new railway bridge, opened in 2025 and India's first vertical lift sea bridge, which replaced the 1914 cantilever bridge whose rusted spans still stand beside it. Ask your driver to use the parking area at the island end for photographs.
Dr A P J Abdul Kalam National Memorial and House of Kalam
Rameswaram is the hometown of the former President and missile scientist Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. The national memorial at Peikarumbu, opened in 2017, holds his grave, a statue, replicas of the missiles he worked on and galleries on his life. In town, his family home on Mosque Street has been turned into a museum called the House of Kalam.
Gandhamadhana Parvatham
The highest point on the island, about three kilometres north of the temple. A small two-storey shrine here holds an imprint believed to be Rama's footprint, and tradition says it is where Hanuman surveyed the sea before leaping to Lanka. The panoramic view across the island, the temple towers and the sea is best in the late afternoon.
Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple
This temple enshrines a five-faced Hanuman and displays stones that float on water, said to be of the kind used to build the bridge to Lanka. Visitors are usually allowed to see the floating stone in its tank.
Villoondi Theertham
About seven kilometres from the temple, a freshwater well sits in the sea near the shore, reached by a short walkway. Legend says Rama shot an arrow into the ground here to give Sita drinking water.

An early start is the single best decision on this trip. Leaving Bangalore by 5:30 AM gets you past Electronic City and the Attibele border before traffic builds. The interstate tax is settled near the border. NH44 then widens into a fast highway to Krishnagiri, where orchards grow Alphonso, Banganapalli and Totapuri mangoes; between April and July the roadside stalls are hard to pass. It makes a good breakfast halt at around 7:00 AM.
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
This stretch runs through granite hills and dry farmland to Dharmapuri, the district from which most visitors reach Hogenakkal, where the Kaveri crashes through rocky gorges and coracle rides take you close to the falls. It sits about 45 kilometres off the highway, so it suits a return-trip detour rather than day one. Salem, the largest city on the way, is home to the Salem Steel Plant, which gives it the name Steel City, and it is also known for mangoes, sago and silver anklets. The Salem bypass keeps the drive moving, and the highway food plazas here are among the best on the route.
Thoonga Nagaram, the City That Never Sleeps
Dindigul has made handcrafted padlocks for over a century, and its locks earned a GI tag. The town is just as famous for Dindigul biryani, made with short-grain seeraga samba rice, and most families take their lunch here below the Rock Fort. The last 65 kilometres bring you into Madurai by mid-afternoon. This 2,500-year-old city, the capital of the Pandya kings, is called Thoonga Nagaram because its streets stay busy through the night. Spend the evening at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, whose towering gopurams are covered in thousands of painted figures, and see the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal if time allows. Madurai is our recommended overnight halt, with hotels for every budget.
Handloom Town of Ramanathapuram
Day two begins on NH87, heading south-east. About 12 kilometres out of Madurai, near Tiruppuvanam, lies Keeladi, where excavations since 2015 have uncovered an urban settlement from the Sangam era, with brick buildings, drainage, pottery inscribed in Tamil-Brahmi script and ornaments. The Keeladi museum displays the finds and is well worth an hour for families and students. The road then runs through Manamadurai to Paramakudi, a weaving town known for its handloom cotton and silk sarees, woven on looms that are still worked by hand in many homes.
Home of India's First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge
Mandapam is the last town on the mainland and faces the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, a chain of 21 islands with coral reefs, sea grass beds and dolphins; Kurusadai Island can be visited with forest department permission. Then comes the highlight of the drive: the Annai Indira Gandhi road bridge, stretching 2.3 kilometres across the sea to Pamban Island. Beside it runs the new railway bridge, opened in 2025, whose central span lifts vertically to let ships pass. The bangalore to rameshwaram distance is about 600 km via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai and Ramanathapuram. That is 10.5 to 12 hours of driving, or 13 to 14 hours with halts. We recommend two days with an overnight stop at Madurai, which is safer, far more comfortable, and lets you see the Meenakshi Amman Temple on the way.
It is possible if you leave Bangalore by 4:00 AM, but you would arrive after dark, tired, and too late for the evening temple session. Crossing the Pamban Bridge and reaching the island in daylight is much more pleasant. For those reasons, almost all our Rameswaram bookings include a night at Madurai on the way out.
