Kappad Beach
About 18 kilometres north, kappad beach is where Vasco da Gama came ashore in May 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India. A small stone memorial marks the landing. Kappad earned international Blue Flag certification for cleanliness and safety in 2020, and the rocky outcrop at one end is a calm place to watch the waves.
SM Street (Mittai Theruvu)
Sweet Meat Street, the city's old market, takes its name from the halwa shops that lined it in British times. Kozhikodan halwa, made from wheat, jaggery and coconut oil in dozens of colours and flavours, is what every visitor carries home, along with banana chips fried fresh in coconut oil. The street is pedestrianised and busiest in the evening.
Mananchira Square and Tali Shiva Temple
Mananchira is a large freshwater tank built by a Zamorin ruler, now surrounded by a landscaped park and heritage buildings, and it is the calm centre of the old city. A short drive away, the Tali Shiva Temple was the Zamorins' own temple and the venue of the Revathi Pattathanam, a centuries-old assembly where scholars debated and were honoured. Its copper-roofed sanctum and wooden carvings reward a quiet visit; traditional dress is expected.
Kuttichira and Mishkal Mosque
Kuttichira is the old Muslim quarter, built around a large pond and lined with tharavads, traditional joint-family homes. Its landmark is the Mishkal Mosque, a 14th-century multi-storey wooden mosque built by the Arab merchant Nakhuda Mishkal, which looks more like a Kerala temple than a Middle Eastern mosque. It was partly burned in a Portuguese raid in 1510 and later restored. Dress modestly and check visiting hours before entering.
Beypore
About 10 kilometres south, at the mouth of the Chaliyar river, Beypore has built wooden ships called uru for well over a thousand years, supplying traders across the Indian Ocean. Some yards still build them by hand without drawings, and watching the craftsmen is unforgettable. The beach and the long breakwater are a favourite sunset walk, and the town is closely linked with the writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, who made his home here.
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
About 19 kilometres south, where the Kadalundi river meets the Arabian Sea, this estuary of mangrove islands is a community reserve and one of the best birdwatching spots in north Kerala. Between November and April it fills with migratory terns, gulls, herons and sandpipers. Early morning brings the best sightings.
Thusharagiri Falls
About 50 kilometres east, near Kodencheri at the foot of the Western Ghats, Thusharagiri is a set of three waterfalls, the tallest dropping around 75 metres. A short trek through forest and spice plantations reaches the lower falls, while the upper falls reward a longer walk. It is fullest between June and December and pairs easily with the Thamarassery drive.
Pazhassiraja Museum and Art Gallery
On East Hill, the Pazhassiraja Museum holds murals, bronzes, old coins and megalithic finds from across Malabar. The adjoining Art Gallery and Krishna Menon Museum display paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma alongside personal belongings of V K Krishna Menon.

Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan
Maddur gave its name to the crisp onion and semolina Maddur vada, still fried fresh along the old highway and a good reason for an early breakfast stop. Mandya, surrounded by sugarcane fields watered by the Krishna Raja Sagar dam, is Karnataka's Sugar City, with jaggery units working through the season. Srirangapatna sits on an island in the Kaveri and was Tipu Sultan's capital until 1799. The Ranganathaswamy Temple, the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace, Tipu's Gumbaz and the spot where he fell are all a few kilometres off the highway.
Dakshina Kashi of Karnataka
The route skirts Mysore on the ring road, but the palace city is always tempting. Mysore Palace, lit by nearly a hundred thousand bulbs on Sunday and holiday evenings, Chamundi Hills and the Devaraja market are all close by for groups breaking the journey. South of the city, NH766 reaches Nanjangud on the banks of the Kapila river. The Srikanteshwara Temple here, one of the largest in Karnataka, is revered as the Kashi of the south, and its Dodda Jathre chariot festival draws huge crowds every spring. Nanjangud is also known for its rasabale, a small GI-tagged banana.
Tiger Reserve on the Highway
Past Nanjangud the land flattens into farmland, and around Gundlupet, especially from July to September, the fields turn yellow and orange with sunflowers and marigolds. Travellers love stopping for photographs; do so only where the driver finds safe parking, and never walk into a field without the farmer's permission. Then the forest begins. Bandipur Tiger Reserve covers about 870 square kilometres, and the highway runs through its core for close to 20 kilometres. Speed limits are low, stopping and feeding animals is prohibited, and elephants, gaur, spotted deer and the occasional tiger are seen from the road. Town Named after Tipu's Battery
At Mulehole the road leaves Karnataka and enters the Muthanga range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, where the interstate tax check is completed. The bangalore to kozhikode distance is about 350 km via Mysore, Gundlupet, Bandipur, Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta and the Thamarassery Ghat. Driving time is seven and a half to nine hours depending on ghat traffic, and with two halts most travellers arrive in nine to ten hours. Leave between 5:00 and 6:00 AM to cross the forest in the morning and the ghat in daylight.
The NH766 stretch through Bandipur and Muthanga is closed to traffic roughly from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. With an early start from Bangalore it rarely affects the outbound drive. On the return, your cab must clear the forest check posts before closing, so we plan to leave Kozhikode by early afternoon. If you need to travel later, the driver takes the longer night route via Mananthavady, Kutta and Hunsur.
