Venkatapathi Bhavi (Lakshabhavi)
A royal stepwell built in the 16th century by Venkatappa Nayaka, brother of the ruler Udachappa Nayaka. It is also called Lakshabhavi because it reportedly cost one lakh gold varahas. The venkatapathi bhavi has staircases at each corner, a carved pavilion, and small shrines to Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva facing each other across the water. Look for the Gajasura Samhara panel on the staircase wall. It is a short drive from the main temple and rarely crowded, which makes it ideal for photography in the late afternoon light.
Anjanadri Hill
Around 45 minutes from Kanakagiri near Anegundi, this rocky hill is revered as the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. Roughly 575 whitewashed steps lead to the hilltop temple, and the climb is repaid with one of the finest views in the region: boulder fields, banana plantations and the Tungabhadra river winding towards Hampi.
