Kunigal Stud Farm and Kunigal Lake
About 20 kilometres back toward Bangalore, Kunigal has been associated with horse breeding since the time of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, and its stud farm is one of the best-known thoroughbred breeding centres in India. Access to the farm is restricted, but the green paddocks are visible from the surroundings. The town's large lake, one of the biggest tanks in the district, and the old Someshwara temple are pleasant stops.
Huliyurdurga
About 25 kilometres from Kunigal, Huliyurdurga is a steep granite hill crowned with old fort walls, with a temple at the summit. The climb is short but steep, rewarding you with wide views over the plains of Tumakuru and Ramanagara districts. Early morning visits beat the heat.
Adichunchanagiri Mutt
About 35 kilometres west of Yediyur, just off NH75 near Bellur, Adichunchanagiri is a revered centre of the Nath tradition and a major educational institution. The Kalabhairaveshwara temple, the landscaped campus on the hill and the peacock sanctuary nearby make it a peaceful and beautiful stop. It is the most common add-on to a Yediyur trip.
Shravanabelagola
About 70 kilometres from Yediyur, continuing along NH75 through Channarayapatna, Shravanabelagola is home to the 57-foot monolithic statue of Gommateshwara Bahubali on Vindhyagiri hill, one of the most important Jain pilgrimage sites in the world. The climb of about 600 steps is steep but short. The Mahamastakabhisheka, held roughly every twelve years, draws devotees from across the globe.
Siddaganga Mutt, Tumakuru
About 45 kilometres north of Yediyur, the Siddaganga Mutt is one of Karnataka's most respected institutions, known for providing free food, shelter and education to thousands of children every year. The Siddalingeshwara temple on the hill and the calm of the campus make it a meaningful stop, easily combined on the return to Bangalore via Tumakuru.
Devarayanadurga and Namada Chilume
Near Tumakuru, Devarayanadurga is a forested hill with the Yoga Narasimha and Bhoga Narasimha temples, and just below it is Namada Chilume, a natural spring linked to the legend of Lord Rama, with a small deer park. The cool, green hill is a welcome contrast to the plains.
Magadi Ranganathaswamy Temple and Kempapura
On the alternate route, Magadi is famous for the Ranganathaswamy temple, a grand Dravidian-style temple with a tall gopuram, and for being the land of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bangalore. His birthplace at Kempapura and his samadhi nearby are reminders of the city's origins.
