Vibhooti Falls
About 20 kilometres from Yana, vibhooti falls gets its name from the whitish limestone deposits around it that resemble holy ash. A short forest walk leads to the falls and a pool at the base. It is at its best from October to January.
Mirjan Fort
Near Kumta on the Aghanashini river, mirjan fort is a sixteenth-century laterite fort associated with Rani Chennabhairadevi, the "Pepper Queen", who ruled over the region's spice trade. Its moss-covered walls, moats and stepped wells make it one of the most photogenic forts on the coast.
Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple
About an hour from Yana, Gokarna is an ancient pilgrimage town whose Mahabaleshwar Temple is believed to house the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva. Traditional dress is expected inside, and the temple streets are lined with old wooden homes.
Om Beach and Kudle Beach
Just south of Gokarna, om beach is shaped like the Om symbol, with two curved coves joined by a rocky headland. Kudle Beach next door is quieter. Both are good for a relaxed evening after the forest.
Sahasralinga
On the Shalmala river near Sirsi, hundreds of Shiva lingas and Nandi figures are carved into the riverbed rocks. They are exposed and easiest to see when the river runs low, from November to May.
Marikamba Temple, Sirsi
The presiding goddess of Sirsi, Marikamba's temple is known for its vivid Kavi art murals and the massive jatre held every two years. It is right on the route into Sirsi.
Unchalli Falls
South of Sirsi, the Aghanashini drops about 116 metres at Unchalli, also called Lushington Falls. It is a natural add-on for travellers staying in Sirsi.

Chitradurga is the "Stone Fortress", home of the Kallina Kote, a massive seven-circle fort built into granite hills. It is also the land of Onake Obavva, the brave woman who defended the fort with a pestle against Hyder Ali's soldiers. The fort is visible from the highway and worth a visit on the return trip. Its boulder-strewn hills, windmills on the ridges and the Chandravalli caves nearby make the Chitradurga stretch one of the most distinctive landscapes on the drive.

Haveri is the "Land of Byadgi Chillies", the deep red, mildly hot chillies from nearby Byadgi that give colour to dishes across South India. The town is also known for its cardamom garlands. Here the route leaves NH48 and turns south-west towards Hangal and Sirsi.
Town of Goddess Marikamba
Sirsi is the "Town of Goddess Marikamba" and one of Karnataka's main areca trading hubs, surrounded by spice gardens and forest. It is the ideal lunch stop and the best base for the night, with the most hotel and homestay options in the area. Refuel here, as fuel stations are rare on the final stretch.
Rocks of Bhairava and Mohini
From Sirsi the road winds through dense forest to the Yana parking area. A short walk on a paved path leads through the trees until the "Rocks of Bhairava and Mohini" suddenly rise above you.
