The third shrine of the Varanga cluster, also called the Matada Basadi, sits inside the premises of the Jain monastery. The matha here is an offshoot of the Humcha Jain Matha and has functioned continuously for centuries, which is why Varanga still hosts Rathotsava, Mahavir Jayanti and Paryushana Parva on a scale you would not expect from a village this size. It is the second largest statue of its kind in Karnataka after Shravanabelagola, and the climb up the rock-cut steps takes ten minutes and repays you with a view across the Karkala plateau to the Western Ghats. Roughly thirty kilometres from Varanga through the Hebri forest belt, the Sitanadi drops into a deep rock pool at Kudlu Theertha. The last stretch is a jeep track followed by a short forest walk, so this is a monsoon-and-after destination rather than a summer one. Forest department permission is required and the trail closes in heavy rain. Shravanabelagola’s Gommateshwara statue, carved around 981 CE, rises 57 feet from the summit of Vindhyagiri hill and is reached by 614 rock-cut steps. Every twelve years the Mahamastakabhisheka draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. For anyone travelling to Varanga this detour is close to essential, because it places the whole trip in context: Shravanabelagola, Karkala and Varanga are three points of the same Karnataka Jain heritage triangle, separated by six hundred years of history and about four hours of driving. Hassan
Gateway to the Hoysala Heritage

The old Sakleshpur to Subrahmanya railway line, with its viaducts and tunnels cut through the ghat, runs somewhere below you through the forest. Ask your driver to stop at one of the estate-run coffee stalls here; the filter coffee on this stretch is the best on the route by a wide margin.
Karkala
Bahubali’s Second Hill
Karkala is the last real town before Varanga and the administrative centre of this taluk. The 42-foot Bahubali monolith of 1432 dominates the skyline from its granite outcrop, the Chaturmukha Basadi of 1586 faces it from the opposite hill, and between them lies Anekere lake and the Padu Tirupati temple. This is where you fill fuel, draw cash and buy anything you might need, because Varanga village has only small provision shops. The road from Karkala to Hebri narrows and the traffic thins to almost nothing. Note the varanga to karkala distance — about twenty-two kilometres by the Hebri road — because a number of visitors base themselves in Karkala hotels and make Varanga a morning excursion rather than staying in the village.
Varanga
The Floating Temple Village
Hebri is a forest-edge town on the Karkala to Agumbe road, and the last eight kilometres from Hebri to Varanga run through areca plantations and paddy on a single-lane village road. There is no signage worth relying on, which is another reason a driver who has done this route before is worth having. Then the road opens, the lake appears on the left, and the Kere Basadi is sitting there in the middle of it looking exactly as it has for eight and a half centuries. The boat operates through daylight hours for a nominal fee, full-length clothing is expected, and photography of the interior is restricted. Arrive before nine in the morning or after four in the afternoon for the light. Simple accommodation is available at the matha and in Karkala, and the Jain meals served at the temple complex are worth planning your day around.

- Weddings: Bangalore wedding hire: Minimum 7-day notice for full refund. Cancellations within 3 days of wedding date are non-refundable.
- Luxury Cars: Luxury vehicles (Rolls-Royce, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class): Minimum 5-day notice for full refund due to limited Bangalore fleet and wedding season demand.
- Peak Dates: New Year, Diwali, and Bangalore long-weekends: Minimum 48-hour notice for full refund. Less than 24 hours is non-refundable.
- Force Majeure: Bangalore bandhs / force majeure (traffic disruptions, road closures): 100% refund within 2 working days regardless of notice period.
- Modifications: Modifications (date change, vehicle upgrade, route additions) with more than 24 hours notice: Accommodated at no penalty, subject to availability.

Varanga is approximately 385 kilometres from Bengaluru by the fastest route, which runs on NH-75 through Hassan and Sakleshpur and descends Shiradi Ghat before turning north at Uppinangady. Driving time is eight and a half to nine and a half hours including two meal stops. The scenic alternative through Chikmagalur, Sringeri and Agumbe is about 402 kilometres and takes roughly ten hours, but is considerably more rewarding if you have the time.
Rates start at Rs 11180. Varanga trip is almost always a two or three-day round trip, the accurate figure depends on your itinerary — WhatsApp your dates and group size and you will have an itemised written quote within two hours.
Yes. One-way drops are available, though because Varanga is a village with limited return load, the one-way rate reflects the empty return leg. For most travellers a round trip works out more economical, and it also gives you the vehicle for local sightseeing around Karkala, Hebri and Udupi. If you are flying back from Mangaluru, a one-way to Varanga with a drop at Mangaluru airport on the return day is often the best value structure.
The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Charged separately are toll and parking, interstate tax where applicable, additional driver bata for travel after 9:45 pm, and GST. The final rental is computed on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage. All of this appears on the written quote before you pay anything.

The Kere Basadi is generally open through daylight hours with a break in the middle of the day, and the boat to the temple runs during those hours for a nominal charge. Timings shift around festivals such as Rathotsava, Mahavir Jayanti and Paryushana Parva, so ask your driver to call ahead from Karkala. Full-length clothing is expected and photography inside the shrine is restricted. There is no entry fee for darshan.

June to August is when the lake fills and the water lilies bloom, which is when the temple looks its most striking, but this is also when Shiradi Ghat is at its most difficult and landslide restrictions are possible. All vehicles carry statutory commercial vehicle insurance and permits, drivers are verified and licensed, and vehicles are serviced before dispatch, but personal accident or travel cover for passengers must be arranged independently. We recommend it for multi-day ghat routes.
Cancellation more than 72 hours before departure attracts no charge and the full advance is refunded within five to seven working days. Between 48 and 72 hours a ten per cent charge applies, between 24 and 48 hours twenty-five per cent, and between 12 and 24 hours fifty per cent. A no-show after the vehicle has been deployed is charged in full. If Tejas Travels cancels for a breakdown or force majeure reason, the full advance is refunded within two working days or a substitute vehicle is provided.
