Edakkal Caves
About 12 kilometres away on Ambukuthi Mala, the Edakkal Caves are not true caves but a deep cleft formed where a giant boulder split. The walls are covered with petroglyphs of human figures, animals and symbols, among the oldest rock engravings in South India. The climb from the parking area is steep and takes around 45 minutes, rewarded by the carvings and a sweeping view over Wayanad. Entry is managed by the tourism authorities, with limited daily tickets and a weekly closing day, so arrive early and confirm timings before you go.
Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Muthanga is part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is contiguous with Bandipur, Nagarhole and Mudumalai. Elephants, gaur, spotted deer and langurs are common, and tigers are occasionally seen. The forest department runs jeep safaris from the Muthanga entrance, with timings and slots set by the department. You will pass through the sanctuary on the way to Sultan Bathery, so keep an eye out for elephants by the road.
Phantom Rock
Near Ambalavayal, about 15 kilometres from Sultan Bathery, Phantom Rock is a natural granite formation shaped like a human skull, perched on the top of a hill. A short trek leads to the base, with good views over the plantations. It is easily combined with Edakkal Caves in the same morning.
Karapuzha Dam
About 20 kilometres away, Karapuzha is one of the largest earth dams in India, with landscaped gardens, walking paths and adventure activities such as zipline and kayaking on the reservoir. The view of the hills reflected in the water at sunset makes it a favourite evening stop for families.
Chethalayam Falls
About 12 kilometres north of the town, a short forest trek of a few kilometres leads to this quiet waterfall, which is at its best during and after the monsoon. It is far less crowded than the better-known falls of Wayanad and is popular with birdwatchers.
Kuruva Island
About 45 kilometres away near Mananthavady, Kuruva is a cluster of uninhabited river islands on the Kabini, covered in dense evergreen forest. Visitors cross on bamboo rafts and walk through the islands. Entry is regulated and numbers are limited, and access can be closed during the monsoon, so confirm before you plan the day.
Banasura Sagar Dam
About 50 kilometres away, Banasura Sagar is the largest earth dam in India, with small islands scattered across its reservoir and the Banasura hills rising behind. Speedboat rides and the nearby Meenmutty Falls trek make it a full half-day outing.
