Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram
Four kilometres out, and the finest of the three UNESCO-inscribed Great Living Chola Temples in workmanship if not in scale. Built by Rajaraja Chola II in the twelfth century, its front mandapam is shaped as a stone chariot with wheels and horses, a flight of steps produces musical notes when struck, and the carving across the base runs to miniature panels of dancers, acrobats and scenes from the Periya Puranam at a density that rewards an hour of slow looking. Swamimalai and the Bronze Foundries
Five kilometres from Kumbakonam, Swamimalai is the fourth of the six Arupadai Veedu abodes of Murugan, reached by sixty steps representing the sixty Tamil years, and it is where Murugan is said to have taught the meaning of the Pranava mantra to Shiva. The town is equally known for its bronze foundries, where families cast temple icons by the lost-wax method their ancestors used in the Chola workshops - the icons that go into temples across South India are still made here. Visit the temple in the morning and a foundry afterwards; the wax modelling and the casting are genuinely absorbing to watch.
Thirubuvanam and the Silk Looms
Around eight kilometres east, Thirubuvanam holds the Kampahareswarar temple, a thirteenth-century Chola foundation with a Sarabeswarar shrine and carving of real quality that almost nobody visits. The town is better known for its silk: Thirubuvanam sarees carry a GI tag and are woven on handlooms in households across the town, distinct from the Kanchipuram tradition in weave and in the way the border is joined. Visit the temple and then a weaver; buying directly is cheaper and considerably more interesting than a showroom, and it is not a signposted activity so ask us to arrange it.
The Mahamaham Tank
A large stepped tank in the centre of the town, ringed by shrines, where a festival held once every twelve years draws crowds counted in millions - by tradition the nine sacred rivers converge here on that day, and bathing in the tank is held to carry the merit of bathing in all of them. Between Mahamahams it is a quiet and rather beautiful place. Visit in the early morning or at dusk. If your travel year coincides with the festival, expect the town to be entirely full and plan vehicles and accommodation many months ahead.
Degree Coffee and the Ramanujan House
Kumbakonam degree coffee is a category rather than a brand - the name refers to first-degree unadulterated milk, and the town has made its reputation on it. The older establishments still serve it properly in a tumbler and davara, and it is worth going out of your way for. In a lane in the town stands the house where Srinivasa Ramanujan grew up and where he did the work that led to the notebooks; it is preserved as a small memorial. Visit the house for twenty minutes, and drink the coffee at least twice a day while you are here.

Kumbakonam is a dense, old, working temple town rather than a monumental one - narrow streets, a great many shrines, the Mahamaham tank near the centre, and coffee shops that take their reputation seriously. Darasuram is four kilometres west and Swamimalai five north, which means that from here the whole delta is within a short drive.
