Chandragiri Hill and the Jain Basadis
The smaller hill facing Vindhyagiri, and the older of the two in terms of continuous Jain presence. By long tradition the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta Maurya renounced his empire, travelled south as a Jain monk with his teacher Bhadrabahu, and spent his final years here - the hill takes its name from him, and the Chandragupta Basadi commemorates the association. The summit holds a cluster of basadis in Ganga and Hoysala styles, quieter and architecturally richer than anything on the larger hill. The climb is far gentler, at around two hundred steps. Visit it if the group includes anyone who cannot manage Vindhyagiri, and visit it anyway if you have the time - most day-trippers skip it and miss the better half of the site.
Bhandari Basadi and Akkana Basadi
Two of the significant ground-level temples in the town, both reachable without any climbing at all. Bhandari Basadi, built in the twelfth century under the Hoysalas, holds images of all twenty-four Tirthankaras lined up in a row within the sanctum, which is an unusual and striking arrangement. Akkana Basadi, from 1181 CE, is the finer of the two architecturally, with the lathe-turned Hoysala columns and the precision of surface finish that mark the best work of that period. Together they take around forty-five minutes and they are the answer for anyone in your group staying at ground level while others climb.
The Kalyani and the Bhattaraka Math
The Kalyani is the temple tank sitting between the two hills, and it is the feature the town is named for - Belagola, the white pond. The Bhattaraka Math beside it is the seat of an ancient Digambara Jain monastic lineage whose heads have all borne the name Charukirti, and it holds a collection of manuscripts, palm-leaf texts and painted murals. More than eight hundred inscriptions dating from around 600 CE to 1830 are recorded across the two hills and the town, in Kannada, Sanskrit, Marathi, Tamil and older scripts - which makes Shravanabelagola one of the most important epigraphical sites in India, quite apart from the statue.
Kambadahalli and the Nearby Jain Sites
About twenty kilometres from Shravanabelagola near Nagamangala, Kambadahalli holds the Panchakuta Basadi, a tenth-century Jain temple complex in Ganga and Nolamba style with a free-standing pillar and five shrines arranged around a common platform. It is an Archaeological Survey protected monument, it is architecturally significant, and on most days you will have it to yourself. Visit if the group has a genuine interest in Jain architecture and you are not attempting Belur and Halebidu on the same day - the two are alternatives rather than additions, since both need real time.
Belur and Halebidu
The natural extension, and the reason a great many of our bookings on this route are full-day circuits rather than short trips. Belur, about seventy kilometres beyond Shravanabelagola, holds the Chennakeshava Temple commissioned in 1117 CE and worked on for over a century, with its celebrated bracket figures around the outer wall. Halebidu, sixteen kilometres further, holds the Hoysaleswara Temple with the most densely carved exterior in Indian architecture. Both were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2023. Doing all three sites in one day from Bangalore is a twelve to thirteen hour commitment and needs a 5:30 AM start.

Nelamangala is where Mysore, Mangalore, Hassan and Tumkur traffic all diverges, and it builds fast on Friday and Saturday mornings. Past the junction the highway opens up properly and the pace settles for the rest of the drive.
Kunigal
Horse Breeding Town of Karnataka
Forty kilometres of good four-lane highway through Solur into Kunigal, with the outskirts giving way to coconut plantations, ragi fields and the low granite outcrops of the southern Deccan. On an early departure this stretch passes in the first light, and it is quick and undemanding driving. Kunigal is known for the Kunigal Stud Farm, one of the oldest horse breeding establishments in India, founded in the eighteenth century and associated with Tipu Sultan before passing through colonial and later private ownership. It is not open as a casual visitor attraction, but it is the reason the town is on the map and it remains a working thoroughbred operation. Our drivers do not usually halt here, since the better breakfast cluster is twenty-five minutes ahead at Yediyur and the priority on this route is banking time early.
Yediyur
Siddhalingeshwara Temple Town
Thirty kilometres of continuing easy highway, and Yediyur arrives at close to the right time for breakfast on a dawn departure. This is the standard first halt on this corridor and the one we recommend using properly. The Siddhalingeshwara Temple sits beside Yediyur Lake and draws a steady stream of travellers on this highway - the shrine is associated with the sixteenth-century Veerashaiva saint Tontada Siddhalingeshwara, and the lakeside setting makes it a pleasant twenty-minute break even for travellers with no intention of going inside. More practically, there is a reliable cluster of highway restaurants here that serve quickly, and it is a dependable fuel and restroom point. Facilities at Shravanabelagola itself are limited, so this is the right place to eat before the climb rather than after it.
Hirisave and Bellur Cross
Coconut and Areca Belt of Hassan District
Thirty-odd kilometres of good highway as the route crosses into Hassan district and the landscape shifts into proper plantation country - coconut, areca and paddy, greener and more enclosed than the open country behind. Hirisave is a small highway town rather than a destination, and it marks the point where the drive starts feeling like the Malnad approaches rather than the Deccan. Bellur Cross is the junction that matters. This is where the route leaves NH 75 for the final run to Shravanabelagola, and it is easy to miss if you are following signage rather than a driver who knows it. Note that Bellur Cross has no relationship to Belur, the Hoysala temple town seventy kilometres further on - the similarity of names causes genuine confusion, and travellers occasionally find they have driven past their turn while looking for a temple that is an hour away.
Shravanabelagola
Jain Pilgrimage Capital of South India
Twelve kilometres of district road running through farmland, and the arrival is the memorable part. Vindhyagiri hill appears well before the town does - a bare granite dome rising out of flat plantation country, with the statue itself visible from a considerable distance on a clear morning. Travellers who have only seen photographs are usually surprised by how isolated and abrupt the hill is. The town at the foot of it is small, arranged around the Kalyani tank between the two hills, and it is a working pilgrimage town rather than a tourist one - a single main street of shops selling offerings, a few simple eateries, and the Bhattaraka Math beside the tank. Our driver parks at the base of Vindhyagiri and waits for the duration, since there is nowhere else to be and the climb takes as long as it takes. For a 5:30 AM departure with a proper Yediyur breakfast, most travellers reach the base of the steps between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM, which is close to ideal.
