Places to Visit in Kannur

St Angelo Fort and the Arakkal Museum
St Angelo Fort was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese viceroy, then held by the Dutch, sold to the Arakkal family, and finally taken by the British - a laterite triangle on a headland with a moat, bastions and a view over the Mappila Bay fishing harbour that is among the best in the city. Nearby, the Arakkal Museum occupies part of the palace of the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal dynasty in Kerala, whose rulers held Kannur and the Lakshadweep islands. Visit both together in a morning. They tell the story of a coastline that was fought over by four European powers because of what grew inland.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Mysore
City of Palaces
The first three hours are the easiest of the day, on six-lane expressway that has transformed this stretch. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be on the expressway before 6:15 AM, because on this route everything downstream depends on reaching the Nagarhole gate in good time. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills, still the largest silk cocoon market in Asia. Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the single most requested addition on family bookings. Maddur and its vada. Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and on this route it is also the last major city - after Hunsur the facilities thin out sharply, so it is the sensible place to eat properly rather than snack.

Hunsur
Timber and Tobacco Town of Mysore District
Forty-five kilometres north-west of Mysore on good two-lane road through farmland. Hunsur is a working market town built around timber, tobacco and the surrounding agricultural belt, and it also holds one of the larger Tibetan settlements in Karnataka at Bylakuppe nearby, though that lies off this particular line toward Kushalnagar. For this journey Hunsur matters as the decision point and the last reliable service stop before the forest. From here the road turns south-west toward the Nagarhole gate, and beyond that there is essentially nothing until Kutta - no fuel worth relying on, limited food, and patchy mobile coverage through the forest stretch. Our drivers fill up here as standing practice regardless of what the gauge says, and this is also where they confirm the schedule against the 6:00 PM gate closure.

Nagarhole
Rajiv Gandhi National Park
The road enters Nagarhole and runs roughly thirty kilometres through protected forest, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and one of the finest wildlife habitats in the country. Elephant, gaur, spotted deer and langur are commonly seen from the road, and tiger and leopard are present though rarely visible. Speed breakers are frequent and speed limits are enforced. Two rules matter here. Traffic through the Nagarhole stretch is not permitted between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, and two-wheelers are barred from this forest road entirely. There is no discretion at the gate. Road surface through and immediately after this section has historically been variable and is worth checking rather than assuming. Kutta, just past the exit gate, is the last Karnataka settlement and the only place between Hunsur and Mananthavady with water, food and toilets, so it is the natural short break even though most travellers would rather press on.

Mananthavady
Northern Capital of Wayanad
The Kerala border comes shortly after Kutta and the change is immediate - wider road, more traffic, and the dense evergreen character of the Wayanad plateau. Tholpetty, the northern range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, is the first attraction on this side and safari jeeps cluster along the roadside here. Kattikulam follows, with the turn for Kuruva Island a few kilometres off the highway - a cluster of uninhabited river islands on the Kabini, reached by raft, and worth a half day if the itinerary allows. Mananthavady is the northern capital of Wayanad and the point where all the routes from Karnataka converge before the descent. It holds the tomb of Pazhassi Raja, the Kottayam ruler who led a guerrilla campaign against the East India Company across these forests for more than a decade before his death in 1805 - a significant figure in Kerala history and commemorated with a memorial and museum. It is also the last town of any size before the ghat, and a sensible place to stop.

Thalassery
Birthplace of the Indian Circus.
The Periya ghat carries the road off the Wayanad plateau down into Kannur district through forest, in a sequence of curves and a few genuinely sharp bends. It is a gentler descent than the Thamarassery churam on the Kozhikode road and generally less congested, but it is still a ghat and our drivers take it at a measured pace, in daylight wherever the schedule allows. The temperature climbs noticeably on the way down and the vegetation shifts from plateau forest to coastal Malabar within twenty minutes. At the bottom the road runs through Iritty and Koothuparamba toward the coast. Thalassery, when you reach it, deserves more than a pass-through: this small town gave India its circus tradition, hosted some of the earliest cricket played in the country, and produced the biryani that is the benchmark for the whole state. Thalassery Fort dates from 1708 and Overbury Folly gives a view over the town and sea. If you time the day to eat lunch here rather than in Kannur, you will have made the right decision.

Kannur
Land of Looms and Lore
The last twenty kilometres run north along the coast, passing Muzhappilangad and Dharmadam Island on the way, with the sea intermittently visible to the west. This is a densely settled coastal strip rather than open road, and progress is steady rather than fast. Kannur was the seat of the Kolathiri rajas and later the Arakkal dynasty, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, and it was fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British in turn because of the pepper trade that came down from the hills behind it. Today it is a working coastal city known for its handlooms, its beaches and above all for Theyyam. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. For Kannur International Airport at Mattannur, note it sits inland roughly thirty kilometres east of the city, back toward the direction you came from, so airport drops are quicker than the city map suggests.

Bus Packages for the Kannur Route
Four package shapes cover almost every enquiry, all quoted in writing and billed garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours. All assume a minimum two-night trip.
Corporate Package
For company offsites using Wayanad or the Kannur coast. Executive AC 27 or 30 seater with recliner seats, USB charging and an LED screen, from your office gate in Electronic City, Whitefield or the ORR corridor. GPS tracking lets the coordinator follow a long interstate run live, and corporate bus hire Bangalore accounts on 30-day credit get monthly consolidated billing.
Family and Community Package
The most common booking here. Malayali community associations in Bengaluru travelling for Theyyam season, and families moving between the two states for weddings. A 32 to 45 seater standard AC coach with a full luggage bay, and a driver briefed for the pace a mixed-age group needs on a nine-hour run.
Budget and Institutional Package
The lowest cost per head, for schools and colleges. A 45 or 50 seater standard AC at Rs 48 per km spreads to roughly Rs 750 a person on a 700 km return, and Bandipur, Wayanad and the Malabar coast make a strong field trip. For school excursion bus rental Bangalore we supply driver verification and inspection records as standard.
Luxury Package
The tier we recommend most often here, because of the distance. A 45 seater Volvo or Benz with air suspension, dual-zone climate control, premium recliners and per-seat charging turns a nine-hour ghat journey from an endurance test into a comfortable day. Also the usual choice for cross-state wedding guest movement. Volvo bus rental Bangalore should be confirmed well ahead.

What Our Customers Say About Our Bus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kannur Bus
No. We hire out the whole vehicle, with your own driver and itinerary. There is no shared boarding, no fixed timetable and no per-seat fare. For a single seat on an overnight service, use a ticketing platform. We start at 27 seaters.
No, we do not operate sleeper buses at all. Our coaches are seated 2+2 or 2+3 across standard AC, executive AC, Volvo and Benz trim. Overnight groups break the journey with a hotel stay, usually in Wayanad or on arrival.
Eight to nine hours one way for about 330 km, including halts and the check post. The ghat sections and the forest stretch make it slow. Leaving Bengaluru by 5:00 AM is what makes the day work.
Bus fares around Rs 26,540. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
No. Nine hours each way plus the Bandipur night restriction makes a same-day return impossible in practice. Two nights is the realistic minimum, and three works better if you want Theyyam plus the coast plus Wayanad on the way.
We do. The permit is arranged as part of the booking, with the cost billed at actuals and shown in the written quote before you pay the advance. It is listed as an exclusion because it is a pass-through cost, not because it is your job to organise.
Included: base fare, all fuel and the driver allowance. Billed separately: tolls and parking at actuals, inter-state tax for Kerala entry, extra driver bata past 9:45 PM, night halt charges on multi-day trips, and GST. Final rental is on total kilometres and hours, garage to garage.
Twenty percent of the total fare, paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card link. The receipt arrives within 30 minutes with driver and vehicle details. The balance is settled at trip end.
Broadly December to April at the village shrines, though the Muthappan ritual at Parassinikkadavu runs daily year-round. Shrine dates are set locally and not centrally published, so fix them first and we build the coach schedule backwards.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passengers under a company insurance policy. Vehicles carry statutory motor cover and drivers are licensed, police-verified and experienced on the Bandipur and Wayanad route, but groups wanting personal cover should arrange it independently.
