Places to Visit in Belur

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

The Chennakeshava Temple is the centrepiece of Belur and one of the most extraordinary works of stone craftsmanship anywhere in India. Commissioned in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty on the banks of the Yagachi River and completed 103 years later across three generations of builders, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Chennakeshava, meaning the handsome Keshava. The exterior walls carry horizontal friezes of elephants, horses, scrolling foliage, mythological narratives from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and rows of deities, all carved in the local chloritic schist that is relatively soft to work and hardens with age to a polished, almost metallic finish. The interior has 48 pillars, each carved differently from all the others, and the famous Madanika bracket figures, 42 celestial maidens depicted in various poses of beauty and grace, are considered among the masterpieces of Indian medieval sculpture. The most discussed of these is the Darpana Sundari, the woman holding a mirror, whose hollow and movable jewellery remains a subject of fascination. Entry to the temple is free and photography is permitted inside the complex. A licensed guide from the Archaeological Survey of India enhances the visit considerably.

Hoysaleswara Temple, Halebidu

Hoysaleswara Temple, Halebidu

Halebidu, the former Hoysala capital before it was sacked and left incomplete by the Malik Kafur-led sultanate forces in the early fourteenth century, houses the Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara temples, which together constitute the largest and most elaborate surviving Hoysala sculptural programme. Unlike the completed Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, the Halebidu temples were never finished, and the superstructures that were planned were never built, yet the surviving external walls contain around 240 elephants, 650 horses, complex figurative panels of gods, goddesses, demons, and scenes from the Hindu epics, executed in the same chloritic schist soapstone as the Belur temple. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains an on-site museum at Halebidu that houses sculptures recovered from the complex. Most travellers on a Belur Halebidu cab from Bangalore plan two to three hours at each temple, treating the pair as the core of a full day's heritage visit. The 17-kilometre drive between the two towns through the Hassan district countryside takes around 30 minutes and is a pleasant section of road.

Yagachi Dam and Water Adventure Park

Yagachi Dam and Water Adventure Park

Yagachi Dam is an earthen gravity dam built across the Yagachi River approximately 2.5 kilometres from Belur town, and it has become one of the most popular recreational stops in the Hassan district for families and groups who combine a heritage visit to the Chennakeshava Temple with an afternoon of outdoor activity. The dam sits at an altitude of 965 feet above sea level, is 1,280 metres long and 26 metres high, and the reservoir behind it creates a scenic landscape of blue water framed by the gentle hills of the Western Ghats foothills. Water sports available at the KSTDC adventure centre on the dam include kayaking, jet skiing, speed boating and banana boat rides, making it a genuinely versatile activity site for groups of different ages and energy levels. The sunset view from the dam, with the water catching the evening light and the forested hills on the far bank in silhouette, is consistently described by visitors as one of the most peaceful ends to a Belur day trip. Families booking a one way cab Bangalore to Belur with an overnight stay frequently plan the temple in the morning and the dam in the afternoon.

Gomateshwara Statue, Shravanabelagola

Gomateshwara Statue, Shravanabelagola

Shravanabelagola is located approximately 92 kilometres from Belur and 150 kilometres from Bangalore, sitting directly on the NH 75 route that connects Bangalore to Hassan and Belur, which makes it the most natural first stop for travellers making the journey toward the Hoysala temples. The 58-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, carved from a single granite rock around 983 CE, is considered the world's tallest monolithic stone statue, and the climb of 614 rock-cut steps to the hilltop where it stands offers views across the surrounding plains that are progressively more spectacular with each hundred steps climbed. The Mahamastakabhisheka festival, held every twelve years, draws hundreds of thousands of Jain devotees and is one of the largest single religious gatherings in Karnataka. Travellers on a full-day Hoysala temples trip from Bangalore typically visit Shravanabelagola on the way from Bangalore to Belur, stopping for around two hours before continuing toward Hassan and Belur.

Shettihalli Rosary Church

Shettihalli Rosary Church

The Shettihalli Rosary Church is a roofless French Gothic church that was built in the 1860s by French missionaries and partially submerged when the Hemavathi reservoir was filled in the 1960s, creating one of the most visually striking and photographically compelling heritage sites in Karnataka. What remains above the waterline is the arched stone structure of the church, with its gothic windows, lichen-covered walls and the surrounding water giving the site a quality of atmospheric melancholy that no intact building can replicate. The level of submersion varies considerably through the year: between November and June when the reservoir is lower, more of the church is accessible and visitors can walk inside the roofless nave, while the monsoon months bring the water to window level. The site is approximately 13 kilometres from Hassan and 50 kilometres from Belur, making it a natural inclusion in the itinerary for travellers staying overnight in Hassan. Those arriving at Belur by Bangalore to Belur taxi who have an extra day often include Shettihalli on a morning drive before returning to Bangalore via Hassan.

Hasanamba Temple, Hassan

Hasanamba Temple, Hassan

The Hasanamba Temple in Hassan town is dedicated to the goddess from whom the city derives its name and is one of the most unusual temples in Karnataka for the singular reason that it is open to worshippers for only one week each year during the Deepavali festival season, with the doors remaining closed for the remaining fifty-one weeks. Local belief holds that the lamps lit inside the sanctum at the time of closing continue to burn throughout the year and the flowers offered at closing are found fresh when the temple reopens. The scale of devotion during the annual opening is extraordinary, with pilgrims from across Karnataka and from the coastal and Malnad communities arriving for darshan in large numbers. Hassan town is 35 kilometres from Belur and is the most practical overnight base for travellers visiting the Hoysala circuit over two days. For travellers whose Bangalore to Belur cab trip coincides with the Deepavali season, planning around the Hasanamba opening is a genuinely rewarding addition to the heritage itinerary.

Lakshmi Devi Temple, Doddagaddavalli

Lakshmi Devi Temple, Doddagaddavalli

The Lakshmi Devi Temple at Doddagaddavalli is a lesser-known but architecturally important Hoysala temple located in a small village approximately 16 kilometres from Hassan and 50 kilometres from Belur. Built in the twelfth century and dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, it features four shrines arranged around a common hall, which is unusual in the Hoysala temple tradition where single and twin shrine layouts are more common. The temple is in excellent condition and sees a fraction of the visitor numbers that Belur and Halebidu attract, offering the kind of quiet, contemplative exploration that is difficult to find at the more famous sites during peak tourist season. Architecture and history enthusiasts booking a Bangalore to Belur car rental for a focused Hoysala heritage study frequently request this temple as a fourth addition to the Belur-Halebidu-Shravanabelagola circuit, as it rounds out the picture of Hoysala temple variety beyond the most celebrated examples.

Hoysala Emblem and Museum, Belur

Hoysala Emblem and Museum, Belur

The Hoysala Emblem, the iconic image of a warrior in battle with a lion that served as the symbol of the Hoysala dynasty and has been adopted as the official emblem of the state of Karnataka, is displayed within the Chennakeshava Temple complex at Belur and is one of the most photographed individual motifs in the entire site. The original stone carving of the emblem is a remarkably detailed piece of Hoysala work, with the warrior identifiable as Sala, the legendary progenitor of the dynasty, in the act of killing a tiger or lion, a scene that the inscriptions associate with the founding myth of the Hoysala kingdom. The small museum attached to the temple complex houses additional sculptures, inscriptions and architectural fragments from the Belur site that help contextualise the main temple and its historical phases of construction, expansion and repair. For school and college groups visiting on a Belur Halebidu cab from Bangalore educational tour, the museum and the emblem together provide accessible entry points into the historical significance of the site beyond the purely aesthetic appreciation of the sculpture.

Bangalore to Belur Bus Packages

Every quote is built around group size, trip duration and vehicle tier. The four structures below cover the majority of belur halebidu tour package from bangalore enquiries we receive.

School and College Excursion Package

The single most common booking on this route, because Hoysala architecture sits in the Karnataka syllabus and the whole circuit fits inside one school day. Includes seat-belt-equipped vehicles, police-verified drivers, live GPS tracking shared with the school or college office, a female attendant on request, and an itinerary sequenced around the Shravanabelagola closing time so no site is missed. We can arrange ASI-approved guides at Belur and Halebidu. See our student transportation management page for the full school excursion bus rental bangalore and college trip bus rental bangalore protocol, including consent and headcount procedures.

Temple and Family Package

For temple committees, extended families and senior-citizen groups of 13 to 45 people. Usually built as a one-day circuit with a Yediyur darshan on the way, Shravanabelagola in the morning and Belur and Halebidu in the afternoon. Because the bus waits at each site, mixed-ability groups can split at Shravanabelagola without anyone being left behind. Groups under thirteen should compare a tempo traveller or a mini bus bangalore to belur option, which usually works out cheaper and can take the direct Belur to Halebidu road.

Corporate Package

Built for offsites, team outings and client heritage days, often extended into Chikmagalur for a two-day format. Executive coaches with pushback seating, onboard PA for a guide to address the whole group, curtains and charging points. Includes GST-compliant invoicing, Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, 30-day credit terms for registered accounts and a single point of contact throughout. Companies running regular movement should also review our corporate travels and employee transport service contracts for corporate bus rental bangalore on a monthly basis.

Luxury Package

Volvo and BharatBenz multi-axle coaches with air suspension, recliner seating and onboard entertainment. On a 470-kilometre same-day circuit that starts before dawn and finishes after dark, seat comfort matters more than the distance suggests, particularly for senior groups. This tier is also the standard choice for heritage society tours and inbound delegations. Route note: The entire Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola circuit is within Karnataka, so no inter-state tax or permit charge applies. How to Book a Bus for Rent in Bangalore — Step by Step

Booking a bus for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps.

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

•      Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

•      Share your travel date and Bangalore pickup location — area, school, college, tech park or hotel name such as Jayanagar, Malleshwaram, Electronic City, Whitefield or MG Road.

•      Share your destination or full day-wise itinerary, total group size, and preferred bus tier: Standard, Executive, Luxury, Volvo or BharatBenz.

•      For the Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola circuit, confirm whether Shravanabelagola is included, so the departure time can be set around its midday closure.

•      For school and college excursions, share the institution name, staff-in-charge contact and headcount so tracking access and an attendant can be arranged.

•      For monthly employee commute contract hire, share the route and schedule details.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

•      Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.

•      The quote itemizes every charge: bus hire rate in rupees per km or as a flat package for the full circuit.

•      Driver allowance is stated separately, from Rs 700 to Rs 1,250 per day depending on the vehicle.

•      Applicable toll estimates and site parking charges are included.

•      Driver bata beyond 9:45 PM is shown upfront, since a same-day Hoysala circuit normally returns later than that.

•      Interstate permit costs do not apply on this circuit, but are listed for itineraries extending beyond Karnataka.

•      No verbal-only pricing. Everything is in writing before you commit.

•      For schools, colleges and corporate clients, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage for approval or PO processing.

•      Request comparison quotes for Standard versus Executive bus hire at the same time.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance

•      Review the written quote and confirm via WhatsApp or phone.

•      A 20 percent advance payment confirms the booking and guarantees the specific bus on your date.

•      For the October to February school excursion season, and for long weekends and Mahamastakabhisheka years at Shravanabelagola, book well ahead and pay the advance early.

•      For large corporate and institutional bookings above Rs 50,000, a higher advance may be required.

•      Payment options: UPI including Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm; NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer; or credit and debit card via payment link.

•      Advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.

•      Confirmation includes driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup confirmation and full billing breakdown — all in writing.

Step 4 — Your Driver and Bus Arrive Early

•      Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at the Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure, which for this circuit usually means around 5:15 AM.

•      For large school and college groups, the driver coordinates the exact gate and boarding order with the staff-in-charge.

•      The bus is clean, sanitized, fuelled and GPS-active.

•      The driver calls you 30 minutes before arrival.

•      During the trip, the driver handles all NH exits, toll payments, site parking and rest stop coordination, and routes large coaches via Hassan rather than the direct Belur to Halebidu back road.

•      At trip end, the balance is settled after deducting the advance.

•      Any additional kilometres or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick bus hire booking: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your group size, Bangalore pickup location, destination and travel date. Written bus hire quote in 2 hours.

Depart Bangalore by 5:30 to 6:00 AM, breakfast at Kunigal, reach Shravanabelagola by 9:30 AM, lunch at Hassan, then Belur and Halebidu in the afternoon. Return to Bangalore is typically between 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

Belur Chennakeshava runs approximately 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Halebidu Hoysaleswara is roughly 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with the museum on a shorter schedule. Shravanabelagola timings are about 6:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The midday closure at Shravanabelagola is the only hard constraint, and every workable one-day plan is built around it. Confirm current timings before travel, as they change seasonally.

Not really. The direct back road is only seventeen kilometres but the surface is poor in stretches and a loaded 45 or 49-seater is slow and uncomfortable on it. We route full-size coaches via Hassan and Hagare instead, which adds about ten kilometres on a much better road and usually saves time overall. Mini coaches and tempo travellers can take the direct route.

20 percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking and guarantee the specific vehicle on your date. The advance is payable by UPI, NEFT, IMPS, RTGS or card via payment link, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. For institutional bookings above Rs 50,000 and for peak excursion dates, a higher advance may be requested.

The fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. It excludes toll and parking, inter-state tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. No inter-state tax applies on this circuit as it is entirely within Karnataka, but a same-day circuit normally returns after 9:45 PM so driver bata will apply. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and everything is itemized in the written quote.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance by company. Our vehicles carry all statutory commercial vehicle insurance and valid permits, but passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance cover. Schools and colleges should confirm their own group cover before travel.

Seat-belt-equipped vehicles, police-verified drivers, live GPS tracking shared with the institution office, and a female attendant on request. The itinerary is sequenced around temple timings so no site is missed, and we can arrange ASI-approved guides at Belur and Halebidu. For groups of thirty or more we recommend two guides, as the carving detail is difficult to follow from the back of a crowd.

Yes, subject to notice period. Cancellation more than 7 days before departure carries no charge and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Charges then step up: 10 percent at 4 to 7 days, 25 percent at 48 hours to 4 days, 50 percent at 24 to 48 hours, and 75 percent under 24 hours. If Tejas Travels cancels for operational reasons, you receive a full refund within 2 working days or an alternate bus.

October to February gives the most comfortable weather for a circuit that involves a good deal of walking and a barefoot climb. That is also peak school excursion season, so coaches are booked out on weekdays well in advance. Book four to six weeks ahead for institutional trips and for long weekends. Summer is workable but the granite steps at Shravanabelagola get uncomfortably hot after mid-morning.
