Places to Visit in Thekkady

Periyar Lake and the Tiger Reserve
The lake was created in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar dam, drowning a valley of forest, and the standing dead trees in the shallows are its signature image. The reserve around it covers around nine hundred square kilometres of the Cardamom Hills and holds elephant, gaur, sambar, wild dog and tiger, though the last is rarely seen. The boat trip takes you along the shoreline where animals come down to drink. Visit on the earliest trip you can get. Sightings are never guaranteed and anyone promising them is selling something, but elephant and gaur at the water are common enough on a morning boat.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city ā Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
The first four hours are the fastest of the journey, on six-lane NH 44. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Electronic City before 5:30 AM, because arriving at Thekkady in the afternoon rather than the evening is what makes the next morning boat possible. The Thoppur ghat between Dharmapuri and Salem is the first of two gradients on this route - four-laned but steep enough that loaded trucks crawl - and our drivers hold back rather than joining in. Salem has the best highway restaurants on the corridor and is the natural breakfast halt.

Dindigul
Lock City of India
Fast, flat four-lane highway south through the Kongu plains, and the easiest driving of the day. Namakkal has the eighteen-foot monolithic Anjaneyar at the base of its rock fort. Karur follows on the Amaravathi, the home textile capital. Dindigul is where the route leaves the north-south corridor and turns west toward the hills, and it lands almost exactly at lunch on an early departure - which is convenient, because the Thalappakatti biryani that originated here is the most famous food stop on this highway. Beyond Dindigul the Western Ghats begin to appear properly on the horizon for the first time.

Cumbum
Grape Valley of South India
The road runs west through Batlagundu, where the Kodaikanal road branches north, and into Theni district at the foot of the Ghats. The mountains are close now and the country changes - irrigated, green, and hemmed in by hills on the western side. Bodinayakkanur lies a short way west of Theni and is where most of the Indian cardamom crop is auctioned; the trade defines the town. The Cumbum valley beyond is grape country. Panneer Thratchai grapes grown on this valley floor carry a GI tag and the vineyards run along the road under the wall of the Ghats, which is an unexpected landscape to find in Tamil Nadu. It is worth slowing for, and the roadside grapes in season are worth stopping for.
Thekkady
Lake in the Cardamom Hills
The last thirty kilometres are the climb. The road leaves the valley floor and ascends through forest into the Cardamom Hills, and the temperature drops perceptibly as it goes - by the top the air is cool and smells of spice, which is not a figure of speech in this particular place. The Kerala border comes at Kumily and the interstate permit is presented there, arranged by us in advance. Kumily is the town: a main street of spice shops, homestays and small hotels, with plantations running up the slopes behind it. Thekkady, four kilometres further, is the reserve entrance and the boat landing rather than a settlement. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage - and on a wildlife booking will take you to the ticket counter first if that is what the next morning requires. A 5:00 AM departure puts most travellers in Kumily by around 4:00 PM.

Bus Packages for the Bangalore to Thekkady Route
Every quotation is built around what you actually need rather than a fixed menu. The four structures below describe how we typically shape bangalore bus booking enquiries on this corridor.
Corporate Package
Built for Bangalore IT and manufacturing teams running offsites at the Kumily resort properties, which handle groups well and are the reason this corridor gets the corporate volume it does. Includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, a named driver for the full multi-day trip, and consolidated monthly billing for registered accounts. The same corporate offsite bus bangalore stays with your team across the drive, the Periyar day and any Munnar extension, with duty slips signed daily and reconciled against the final invoice. Our corporate travels desk manages the arrangement end to end, including a second vehicle where the group splits across activities.
Family and Group Tour Package
The most common private-hire booking on this route, and usually part of a wider Kerala circuit rather than a Thekkady-only trip. Munnar and Thekkady over five or six days is the standard shape, with Alleppey or Kochi added for a longer run. Planning is built around the Periyar boat: arrive in the afternoon so the ticketing step can be taken the day before, take an early trip the following morning, and allow two nights so a full boat does not cost you the experience. Luggage capacity is the quiet advantage over cars on a six-day circuit, and for extended families travelling with elders a coach with a single boarding point is far easier to manage than a convoy.
Budget Package
For groups where cost per head decides the booking ā college trips, school excursions, association tours and community groups, which Periyar suits particularly well as a destination. Non-AC and standard AC 27 to 45 seater coaches, point to point, no frills, clean vehicle and a verified driver. The bus rate per km in bangalore for this tier is our lowest, and across a 580-kilometre one-way run the saving spread over forty passengers is substantial. The budget tier is about vehicle specification and nothing else. Maintenance schedules, driver vetting and ghat-route experience are identical across every tier we run, which on this particular road is not a detail we would compromise on.
Luxury and Volvo Package
Volvo and Benz multi-axle coaches with reclining seats, better suspension and proper sound insulation, for groups that want a ten-hour drive and a ghat at the end of it to be comfortable. On this corridor the difference is functional rather than cosmetic: suspension quality is felt far more on the Thoppur descent and the Kumily climb than on flat highway. This tier covers our volvo bus rental bangalore fleet and the wider volvo luxury bus range. Note that the largest multi-axle coaches take the Kumily ghat slowest of all, so we discuss size against comfort at the quotation stage rather than assuming bigger is better.
Our Bus Fleet in Bangalore
Our 45 seater bus rental bangalore and 35 seater bus rental bangalore configurations cover the bulk of bookings on this route, within a fleet running from 27 to 50 seats. We operate a complete range of group vehicles from the same Bangalore base, so if your headcount changes after booking we can usually move you up or down a category without restarting the process.
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Bus ā 27 to 50 seater, AC and non-AC, including Volvo and Benz coaches; the core vehicle for this route
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Mini bus ā 12 to 24 seater, for smaller groups and for resort approaches a full coach cannot reach
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Tempo traveller ā 8 to 18 seater, which takes the Kumily ghat comfortably
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Force Urbania ā 13 to 17 seater luxury van
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Cars ā 4 to 7 seater, from Etios, Dzire, Innova, Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross, Fortuner and Commuter through Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, Mercedes-Benz S Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost
Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our coaches are seated configuration with pushback seats, which is why we plan this route as a daylight drive with an early start rather than an overnight run. On a road that finishes with a thirty-kilometre forest ghat, that is a safety position as much as a comfort one. For groups with elderly travellers, breaking at Madurai or Dindigul turns the journey into two easy halves and, in the Madurai case, adds the Meenakshi Amman Temple to the trip.
Billing Details ā What Is Included and What Is Extra
We quote in writing before you book and the quote itemises everything, so there are no surprises at trip end. A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking.
Included in the Quoted Fare
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Base fare and fuel charges
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Driver allowance
Not Included ā Billed Separately at Actuals
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Toll charges and parking fees
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Interstate tax and permit for the Tamil Nadu and Kerala crossings
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Additional driver bata after 9:45 PM
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā GST as applicable
ā¢Ā Ā Ā Ā Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage
The garage-to-garage basis is standard across the organised group transport industry in Bangalore. The meter starts when the coach leaves our garage for your pickup point and ends when it returns, and we factor this into the written quote, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
Three points are specific to this route. First, boat tickets, reserve entry, bamboo rafting and every forest department programme are booked by you with the department and paid on site. We arrange transport and time the day around what you have secured. No operator can obtain a boat ticket the department has not released, and anyone telling you otherwise is not being straight with you. Second, the Kerala interstate permit applies at the Kumily border and is quoted as a separate line at actual, alongside the Tamil Nadu permit. Third, on a Munnar and Thekkady circuit the hill running between and around the two is substantial, and our package quotes carry a stated allowance for it rather than leaving it to surface at settlement.
Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. Vehicle insurance and full statutory driver and vehicle compliance are maintained across the fleet. For the forest department programmes, the department operates its own arrangements and those are worth checking with them directly.

What Our Customers Say About Our Bus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions ā Bangalore to Thekkady Bus
The bangalore to thekkady distance is around 580 kilometres via NH 44 through Salem, Karur and Dindigul, then west through Theni and the Cumbum valley to Kumily, with reported figures between 560 and 600 kilometres. A private coach takes 10 to 11 hours with two proper halts, and a full-size 45 or 50 seater should be allowed closer to 12. There are two gradients ā the Thoppur ghat before Salem and the thirty-kilometre climb from the Cumbum valley at the end. A 5:00 AM departure puts a coach into Kumily in daylight, which is what we plan for.
Yes. Full-size coaches use the Kumily ghat every day and it is a normal working road, but size affects both timing and access. A 45 or 50 seater adds forty to fifty minutes on the final climb against a 35 seater, and some of the smaller resort and homestay approaches off the Kumily main street cannot take a full-length coach at all. Up to thirty-five passengers we recommend a 35 seater. Between thirty-five and fifty a full coach is correct and we build the extra ghat time into the schedule. Share your hotel address at the enquiry stage and we will tell you in advance whether the bus reaches the gate.
Bus fares around Rs 44,780. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and guarantees the specific bus on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card. A receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and your confirmation carries the driver name, mobile number, vehicle registration and full billing breakdown in writing. For large corporate bookings above Rs 50,000, and over the December to January peak, a higher advance may be requested.
No, and we would be wary of anyone who says they can. The Kerala forest department runs a fixed number of scheduled trips a day with set capacity, released through their own channels, and no transport operator has access to allocation beyond that. In season, demand exceeds supply and a full trip is full ā there is no standby. What we do is get your group to Thekkady in the afternoon so the booking step can be taken the day before, take you to the counter or landing at the right time, and build the day around the trip you have secured. Booking arrangements have shifted between online allocation and counter sales more than once, so check the current position with the forest department close to your travel date.
It is not a lost day. The reserve runs bamboo rafting, guided jungle walks, border hiking and night patrols, all with strictly limited numbers and booked independently of the boat, and a good many visitors find them a better experience because you are in the forest rather than looking at it from the water. Several are led by guides from local tribal communities. Kumily also has an activity cluster just outside town with jeep safaris to the plateau viewpoints and village visits. This is the practical argument for giving Thekkady two nights rather than one, particularly for a large group where a single full boat would otherwise leave forty people with nothing planned.
Yes, two. The Karnataka to Tamil Nadu permit is checked at Attibele shortly after Hosur, and the Kerala permit is presented at the Kumily border at the top of the ghat. Both are arranged by us in advance and billed at actuals rather than absorbed into the base rate, so you need do nothing and there is no delay at either crossing. Our drivers handle both routinely and carry the documentation with the vehicle papers.
Yes, and this is how most groups book it. The same coach and driver stay with you throughout ā Kumily to the boat landing, the plantation visit, Peermade, Vandanmedu, and the four-hour leg to Munnar, which is the most common onward extension. Adding Alleppey or Kochi at the end turns it into a full Kerala circuit of six or seven days. Multi-day bookings are billed on total kilometres and hours with a per-day minimum, plus driver allowance and night halt charges. Share your day-wise itinerary at the enquiry stage and we quote the whole trip as one number, with the hill running stated explicitly.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our coaches are seated configuration with pushback seats. On this route we plan a daylight drive with a 5:00 AM start rather than an overnight run, which on a road finishing with a thirty-kilometre forest ghat is a safety position as much as a comfort one. For groups with elderly travellers, breaking the journey at Madurai or Dindigul turns it into two comfortable halves and adds the Meenakshi Amman Temple to the trip.
Bus hire runs on a longer notice period than car hire because a coach held for your date cannot be resold late. Cancelling more than 7 days before departure carries no charge and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Between 4 and 7 days the charge is 10 percent of the total fare, between 48 hours and 4 days it is 25 percent, and between 24 and 48 hours it is 50 percent. Multi-day outstation trips to Thekkady and Munnar need a minimum 7-day notice for a full refund. On insurance, Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. All vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and every driver holds a valid commercial licence, but personal travel cover should be arranged independently ā worth doing for a school or college group, where a block policy is usually inexpensive.
October to March for comfort, with September to November often best for wildlife as the forest thins slightly after the rains. December and January are the peak and Kumily is busy, so book early. The southwest monsoon from June brings heavy rain to these hills ā the reserve stays open and the forest is at its most spectacular, but boat trips and walks are weather-dependent, the ghat needs care and the leeches are real. April and May are warm even at this altitude but perfectly workable. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your travel date, Bangalore pickup location, group size, hotel address and day-wise itinerary. A written itemised quote follows within 2 hours; confirm it, pay the 20 percent advance, and you receive driver details, vehicle registration and the full billing breakdown in writing. Our rental bus booking and WhatsApp enquiry lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
