Shivanasamudra - Gaganachukki and Bharachukki
The Cauvery divides around the island of Shivanasamudra and drops in two separate falls. Gaganachukki, on the Mandya side, is the taller and is viewed from a watchtower across the gorge - a segmented cascade dropping into a deep ravine. Bharachukki, on the Chamarajanagar side, is broader, and steps lead down toward the base with coracle rides operating when water levels allow. They are around fifteen kilometres apart by road and both are worth seeing. Visit between August and January when the flow is strong; by March it thins considerably. Access and coracle operation depend on water levels and are periodically restricted for safety, so confirm close to your travel date.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Kanakapura
Granite City of Karnataka
The route leaves Bangalore south on Kanakapura Road, and the first stretch through the city outskirts is the slowest part of the day. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be past Harohalli before 7:30 AM. Passengers boarding in Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Banashankari or Kanakapura Road itself are directly on this line and get away quickly; those from Whitefield or Hebbal should allow an extra forty-five minutes to cross the city. Kanakapura is the centre of the Karnataka granite trade, and the quarries and cutting yards along the road make that obvious. It is also the gateway to the Cauvery valley - Sangama, where the Arkavathi meets the Cauvery, and Mekedatu with its gorge, lie off this road, as do the sanctuary camps further south. There is a reliable cluster of highway restaurants here and it is the sensible breakfast halt on this route, since the options thin considerably beyond.

Sathanur
Cauvery Camp Country
Thirty kilometres of two-lane road running south through granite country and scrub, with the landscape opening out and the traffic thinning noticeably. This is pleasant, unhurried driving and the first stretch that feels genuinely rural. Sathanur is the turn-off point for the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary camps - Bheemeshwari, Galibore and Muthathi lie down the tracks that lead west from around here toward the river. For travellers whose destination is a fishing camp rather than Kollegal itself, this is where the itinerary diverges, and it is the main reason we recommend the Kanakapura route for those bookings. For everyone else the road continues south, and from this point on the Cauvery is never very far to the west.

Malavalli
Sugarcane Belt of Mandya
The road crosses into Mandya district and the character changes completely - dryland scrub gives way to irrigated Cauvery country, with sugarcane to the horizon, canals alongside the road and the jaggery units that process the crop locally. Halagur is a small town whose economy runs almost entirely on this, and the smell of boiling cane is unmistakable in season. Malavalli is the larger town and the junction that matters: the road west from here leads to Shivanasamudra, around twenty kilometres away, which means travellers heading for the falls turn off before reaching Kollegal at all. For a day trip built around Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, Malavalli rather than Kollegal is the practical pivot. Our drivers will confirm which way the day runs before setting out, because doubling back from Kollegal to Shivanasamudra wastes the better part of an hour.

Kollegal
Silk City of Karnataka
The final twenty kilometres cross the Cauvery and enter Chamarajanagar district, and the river crossing is the moment the trip changes register - the water is wide here, the banks are wooded, and the country beyond feels different from the irrigated plain behind. Kollegal sits at around 660 metres and is a working town rather than a tourist one, arranged around its market and its looms. It was part of Coimbatore district in the Madras Presidency until the States Reorganisation Act moved it to Karnataka in 1956, and both Kannada and Tamil are spoken here as a consequence - a linguistic border town in a way that is unusual this far inside the state. The name is traced to two sages, Kauhala and Galava. For most travellers Kollegal is the pivot rather than the stop: MM Hills to the south-east, BR Hills south, Talakadu west, Shivanasamudra behind. It is also the last town with proper fuel, ATMs and food before any of the forest roads, so use it.

Bus Packages for the Kollegal Route
Four package shapes cover almost every enquiry, all quoted in writing and billed garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours.
Corporate Package
The most common booking on this route, because the falls circuit is close enough for a same-day team outing that still gets people out of the city. Executive AC 27 or 30 seater with recliner seats, USB charging and an LED screen, from your office gate in Electronic City, Whitefield or the ORR corridor. Corporate bus hire Bangalore accounts on 30-day credit get monthly consolidated billing.
Family and Community Package
For extended families, apartment associations and temple committees, including sanghas making the annual MM Hills trip. A 32 to 45 seater standard AC bus with a full luggage bay for mats, vessels and food, and a driver briefed to hold the vehicle while the group is at the falls.
Budget and Institutional Package
The lowest cost per head, for schools and colleges. A 45 or 50 seater standard AC at Rs 48 per km spreads to roughly Rs 370 a person on a 350 km round trip, and Shivanasamudra, the 1902 power station and the Hoysala carving at Somanathapura make a strong curriculum trip. For school excursion bus rental Bangalore we supply driver verification and inspection records as standard.
Luxury Package
A 45 seater Volvo or Benz coach with air suspension, dual-zone climate control, premium recliners and per-seat charging. On a two-lane road the suspension earns its premium more than on an expressway run. Suited to client days out and senior groups. Volvo bus rental Bangalore should be confirmed early.

What Our Customers Say About Our Bus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Kollegal Bus
Three to three and a half hours one way for about 142 km via Kanakapura. The road is two-lane for much of the way, so a bus runs slower than the distance suggests. Leaving by 5:30 AM makes a real difference.
Bus rent Bangalore starts at Rs 12,100 excludes driver allowance, tolls and GST.
Yes, and it is the most popular itinerary on this route. An early start gets you to Bharachukki by mid-morning, Talakadu after lunch and Somanathapura late afternoon. Adding MM Hills to the same day does not work.
July through October is the strong window, fed by the monsoon and upstream releases. April to June can be a trickle. For a summer trip we suggest building the day around Talakadu, Somanathapura and the temples, with the falls as a bonus rather than the anchor.
No. Falls entry, sanctuary charges, coracle rides and any nature camp booking are paid by the group directly and sit outside the vehicle fare. The quoted bus fare covers the vehicle, fuel and driver only.
Included: base fare, all fuel and the driver allowance. Billed separately: tolls and parking at actuals, inter-state tax if a border is crossed, extra driver bata past 9:45 PM, and GST. Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours, garage to garage.
Twenty percent of the total fare, paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card link. The receipt arrives within 30 minutes with driver and vehicle details. The balance is settled at trip end.
On the main road to Kollegal and the falls, yes, and parking at Bharachukki takes full-size coaches. If the itinerary continues to MM Hills, the ascent is narrow with tight hairpins and we often recommend a 27 to 33 seater for that leg.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passengers under a company insurance policy. Vehicles carry statutory motor cover and drivers are licensed and police-verified, but groups wanting personal accident or travel cover should arrange it independently.
Seven to fourteen days for weekends, longer through the monsoon months when falls traffic peaks and large vehicles get committed early. Three to five days is enough midweek.
